I have two different hypotheses as to why this happen.
>number one: the merchant guild
In the middle ages, merchants and artisans protected their secrets, in particular the information regarding how their crafts were done in order to make sure nobody would copy and therefore steal their position in the market, so by telling us lies, the great artists make sure that nobody takes their positions (or steal their jobs)
>number two: high spatial-visual intelligence, low verbal one
Very few people can be expert in two things at once. People often over specialize in one single activity. They might have a great skill in all visual-spatial related, but very little in being able to structure all that information in the shape of logical sentences, so they always fail at trying to explain and often don't even try as they don't see a reward or enjoyment in doing so
