gesture is a tool, peoples usage and understanding of it might differ from person to person. that's why it is such a vague topic.
but it's a TOOL that you use to help you understand complex (or not) arrangements of elements by grouping and simplifying them.
take the face for an example, you might not understand how the face moves if you look at each element by itself. but using gesture you get a feel for how the entire face moves. and you can only do this because some of the elements are inherently connected.

just like how the upper arm and lower arm are connected. because they're connected, you can simplify their form while still keeping something essential.

again, this is a TOOL. i'm not telling you to draw noodle arms, but just being aware of the gesture of a pose, expression or whatever else can help you make design decisions that are more visually appealing and coherent. it helps you see the bigger picture.
