Whatever happened to letting parents shoulder the nuanced task of deciding what's appropriate for their own kids?

Here's a thought: Stop concerning yourself with what's appropriate for other people's kids. Every child has a different level of maturity and tolerance, it's a case-by-case basis. There's no one-size-fits-all solution. You don't cultivate mental fortitude by having the world censored for you up until you're no longer young enough for society to consider you sacred anymore.

What does everyone like about this? Why is it so popular? The picture quality is pretty bad, and the design isn't anything special. I've seen drawings with better fundamentals posted here before. So what's so successful about this in particular?

Color should be the last fundamental you worry about. You should be comfortable drawing the things you want to paint before you try to paint them.

Things like shape design and perspective are much more important to you as an artist at this stage.

And in painting, you should only be using color to try to train your eye to see in value. Values >>>>> color.

When you do move on to color, think about temperature. I think temperature harmony is the key to colors that work. After that, color is the fundamental where you truly get to go crazy and be yourself.
