Now create a new layer with a filled in black shape like such. take this time to correct and clean any little sketchy lingering hiccup lines that might still be present from isolating the box from the perspective grid so you end up with a nice, clean silhouette.

now select the whole box. if you're using CSP, look for the magic wand tool, then make sure you have ADD selections enabled, otherwise you're going to be clicking areas one by one instead of adding to the selection each time.

First we select the side of the box with magic wand tool, and drop some gradient shading with varying opacities (just drag the layer opacity slider until it looks good, then do it again, on a new layer, repeat until you have something really crisp and nice looking.)

in my case it ended up being three layers of spraypaint can bounded by the magic wand tool wiith the following respective opacities: 31% 43% 31%

Ok so now erase, erase, erase, and ta-da? we have a wonky-ass box in 3 point perspective with a horizon line.

We're going to apply shading next, but remember, the whole point of doing stupid exercises like these is to do them ad nauseam to the point that you don't have to think about it anymore and it just becomes an integrated tool in your MIND (like jun gi? that the dudes name w/e the asian guy who does the insane perspective drawings, you know the one) and thus begins to occur in your art naturally and organically.

So next, is a weak spot for your boy boxman, i kinda suck at perspective and logical thinking but I'm going to try my best.

We're going to ignore the top vanishing point and just use three points to create a box in THREE point perspective.

Neither can your mother. Especially in that short skirt she's wearing ; ^ )

Anyways next I'm going to take that two point perspective layer, copy it, rotate it 90degrees on a new layer, 25% opacity.

color one pink using the lock transparency tool, color the other teal, and bam four point perspective in the golden ratio bitches.

Ok so at this point I'm going to assume (assumption is the mother of all fuckups btw) that you have gone to this thread >>5161627

opened the vilppu folder on box forms, watched the whole hour long session, and memorized how to draw a box with simple shading.

What? you haven't? Don't tell me you also don't know how the fibonacci sequence applies to creating natural looking perspective?

Jesus crust. Fine, then before I dive into applying box forms to this bitch, we need to have lesson in shading a box.

I'm going to start by opening a new canvas that is in the golden ratio once more (necessary for creating natural perspective btw) one exactly like in >>5168260

and then I'm going to create two points of perspective using only lines, 50% opacity.

That is an excellent looking question, one so excellent, I'm being told by my producers, one we don't sadly, unfortunately don't have an answer to.

I'm only kidding! Of course the tree of life can fall into 1 point perspective, (the origin point of the horizon falls where the Da'at sefirot should go)

From here we can start to turn our round forms into box forms.

Now at this point, I'm 100% certain the more seasoned pros are looking at me like "Boxman, 36 layers? really? how the fuck are you going to find your original lineart if you need to edit it?"

Well this is where I'll give my philosophy on layers, obviously don't just create a stupid amount of 50% opacity layers, but also don't waste time thinking "Gee could I save a layer or two? " why? it's not a finite resource (unless your cpu sucks or something) and yes, technically I really do need every single layer of those 36 layers to complete my picture and occassionally i find myself just clicking through layer visibility icons of little eyes trying to find THAT DAMN SKIN TONE LAYER or whatever, but in general, I just make a new layer whenever it's needed or I just feel like it. No need to create a separate skin tone layer, rather, the combination of the two colors i picked, the multiply 25% orange and pink 100% screen and 100% middle grey (which you add black and white to) creates the skin tone by subtraction. or inclusion. or whatever, by elimination! you get it !

Simple, we color pick what we want, and create a new layer with 100% opacity and clean the fuck out of it. make it look nice and almost vector quality.

5168659

right here is what i'm talking about in the prvious post, where it's obvious the artist just didn't set the opacity right and it looks cheesy and lame

so how do we fix those errors without losing our intention of the form we want?

>> No.5168649 [View]

and just more 50% layers over and over again, color picking, we're using our lack of confidence to our advantage, I really don't know how this picture is going to turn out (good news for you fellow autists that can't imagine well) and thus we play it safe and just keep adding layers upon layers. if we get the lame overlay of shades we don't like, you know the one i'm talking about, we're its like 50% too bright and you don't want it there, you just color pick the level you want and set a new layer at 100% opacity and draw over the parts you don't want.

again, just more color picking, and 50% layers experimentation

If for whatever reason, I decide I'm straying too far from the original reference in color, I can just scoop up and color pick the original references color hair, but put it on top of all my colors at 50% opacity. (which i have done, i made the hair more closer to the original) This creates a harmony where you can follow any kind of references color, but you still get that pleasing color harmony amongst your own chosen palette.

again, im reusing color as much as possible, the off white yellowish color, im using it in the skin, in the hairband, i could even go so far to use it in the cherries in her hair, or hell the leaves in hair, it just takes practice and experimentation and judgement of "oh ok that looks pleasant and natural" versus "eww ugly why would i ever put those two colors together"

Everything at this point, is just the following: Eyedrop the colors you've already used, create layers with 100% opacity if you want that color to continue as is, and shade with pure black 50% or even 25% opacity layers.

and then just clean up, clean up, clean up all your lines and forms.

This is the part where you can have some fun, just drop a color somewhere and see if it looks good, if it doesn't; just undo.

Remember, in color, you want an overarching principle color (loomis goes into this in creative illustration) in our case its the pinkish and yellowish tones, and you want everything else to stem from that, and be present in multiple places.

if for example, i decided to add a roof of a building in the background, i would consider using the girls hair (orange) for the roof color and maybe her skin tone for the wall colors. REUSE colors almost to a stupid level.

Now these rules, I learned from pixel art:

1) Dark blue, especially when half opacity'd with the process red makes an excellent substitute for black.

2) reuse colors AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, if you can use the same red in the hair outline in the skin, do it. You want to minimize the end result of colors, not have thousands of shades, which just just looks overdone and messy. You want clean, crisp, vibrant in color forms that all overlap nicely with good color harmony. which brings me to my next point

3)Have you noticed I don't fuck with the opacity of the brush at all? I always use 100% but instead change the opacity of the layers to 50% for example if I want a thinner brush. This creates consistency and you know to select the same pure black and that you're on a 50% layer opacity rather than create dozens of extra shades by fucking with opacity of the brush setting.

anywho next is the arms/hands layer finished, we remove the sketchy layer underneath.

So the arms are another weird area, right?

How am I supposed to put arms on this BEAST without it looking weird, having crazy manly shoulders like in the OP

simple, you have them logically fall where they do on the actual person, mid-thigh, and you do that part correctly, which requires me to do a semi-sketch underneath

Now we drop the tree layer, start adding some details to the lower body, feet and crotch.
