I choose the color scheme before hand, picking up complimentary colors and something to contrast the rest (but nothing with too much contrast) lightly wash the areas the main lightsource hits with color dodge blending mode, using a mid tone of the color of the lightsource (be careful not to overuse). For the shadows in I chose a warm dark red as opposed to the cold red color coming from the lightsource, shadows closer to lightsource more vibrant and darker and further away lighter and less vibrant.

Also i would suggest using gamma color blending in your photoshop: Edit > Color Settings > More Options > Blend RBG colors using gamma <-- put 1.00 as variable
This makes color blending results less muddy, some may not like this but definitely worth the try. I might make a tutorial about colors when I feel comfortable and good enough with them myself.

Thanks, the idea for the blade is to be some sort of a sacrificial blade, need to take another look at the design

Rendering in the first one, thanks for all the notes you gave me in the previous thread, I wont be going into too much detail with these, thinking 1-2 done in a day.

I see your point and I agree for the most part, the point is to get my concept art section of my portfolio up to date, as ive been unemployed for a long time now and I desperately need a job at a game studio, been searching far and wide with no results. I will not overrender these ofc as it would take literally forever. The designs might change during the render process and i agree that I took the short road with most of them. I dont want any too crazy designs and like to keep it somewhat traditional and conventional looking, but ill see what I can do to make them more interesting. Ill also be adding simple small backgrounds for each at the end, havent decided on anything solid yet

Good to go, but I would add some deep blue colors to the shadows and the background to make it more interesting, and maybe downplay the highlights everywhere else but his head area to get a better focus there.

As for designing a character goes, try to get into the mindset and role of the character yourself, think of what he is and what he is doing, and wearing. everything from major design aspects to little details should complement that. Lets say for example you have to paint a forest elf ranger, you want a lot of manouverability in the character, not too much naked skin because of camouflage and protection, and most of all, something to relfect the culture he/she is from. I recommend to always start off with the most conventional route with the design and from there try to push it to the degree you want. The more real your character feels the more impact it has, there is a fine line with a believable character and a character that has been taken too far design wise where it is no longer grounded to reality (for example, chainmail-bikinis, I never paint anything like that, and everyone is cool with it)

Its not much but hope it helps.
