I'm closer to this board's demographic than I thought and that scares me. Didn't know there were so many dumbass kids like me here. I hope most of them know better than to post shit they don't know about, but that's probably too much to hope for.

19
Bout to give Void a try on my main laptop, heard good things and it's a been a while since last year's fuckup so it should be safe, as far as I've heard.
Have gentoo on an old desktop because I'm naive. I only hope to one day know what I'm doing and treat it right.

I switched a few years ago, from Arch actually. Before Arch, I mainly used Gentoo, but also Ubuntu at times when I needed a system to just work and not compile for days. NixOS filled both the customization gap of Gentoo & Arch, but the stability gap of Ubuntu. The dealbreaker for me was really that NixOS had built-in support for deterministic builds and rollbacks which fixed my major problem with Arch which was: occasionally an update would cause breakage when I needed to use the computer and my only solution was to keep the system on a btrfs partition with snapshots for every system upgrage (if you've tried this for more than a few months you'll know that it doesn't work well over time) NixOS doesn't need a full system snapshot because it is able to reproduce the same system as long as you have the nix store paths available. I wouldn't recommend it for just anyone, but someone with at least some scripting/programming knowledge and a desire for a better Linux system than the traditional package manager (or bsd-style port-based system as in Gentoo). You can look at >>>/ng/
Other options if you want something more advanced would be Guix or Silverblue, but IMO NixOS is the best shot (and if you look into the history of deterministic package management you'll find that NixOS was the one really spawned by academic research rather than being a copycat or fork)

>still go on a forum like this
>feel the need to go on /g/
The problem here is that you have no perspective on life. "Going on /g/" is something that somehow defines life for you. For a 40-year-old it doesn't. It's just a tech board, not really any more defining about life than say reading a newspaper or buying a cup of coffee. In other words, there's no grand meta-meaning to it as it's not part of an adolescent growing-up process. Because of your age everything you do is still intrinsically tied with your growing-up process so you end up making statements the absurdity of which you're not even aware of. You might as well have said
>Wow, I read a newspaper when I was 13 years old. How can you STILL read a newspaper at 45?
or
>I hope I don't feel a need to go sit in the sun and drink a cold beverage when I'm 45!
You see, old fogies go on /g/ or buy a cup of coffee or enjoy the sun and cold drinks because they like it. It's not that serious. One day you'll understand when you're an adult and the confusing years of growing up are well behind you.

Devuan for now.
I was using void, slack before that. Ditched void after the "disappearing dev" shenanigans and couldn't really find a suitable replacement other than going back to slack. I'd /like/ to jump ship for either openbsd or netbsd, screw GNU+Linux, but currently neither are working properly with libreboot. FDE is a must.
