Want help?
>State budget & CURRENCY
>Post at least some attempt at a parts list
>List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
>For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

CPUs based on current pricing
>Athlon 200GE - HTPC, web browsing, bare minimum gaming (can be OC'd on most mobos with the right BIOS)
>R3 2200G - Minimum 30-60fps gaming. The stronger 3400G sells for $150. (R3K APUs OCs better than R2K)
>R5 2600 - 60fps+ gaming CPU with great value
>i5 9600K - Great gaming CPU
>i7 9700K - Overkill gaming CPU
>i9 9900K - Budget video editing
>i9 9980X - Professional tasks

RAM
>Do not use a single DIMM. 2 sticks for a typical dual channel CPU
>CPUs benefit from fast RAM; 3200CL16 or Micron E-die ("AES" in P/N) recommended
>AMD B & X chipsets and Intel Z chipsets support XMP
>B-die is EOL, stock is limited

GPUs based on current pricing
1080p
>RX 570/580 8GB - Can be found on sale/used for cheap. Look for 570s which are >1240MHz boost
>(GTX 1660TI @ ~$230/Vega56 @ ~$270) - higher fps / more demanding games
>RX 5700 - higher FPS
1440p
>RX 5700 - standard, 75-100FPS+
>RX 5700XT - higher fps
2160p (4K)
>RTX 2070S OC - budget option. Turing scales better into 4K than Navi does. OR upscale from lower resolution with RIS
>2080Ti - best for 4K but expensive

>Navi AIB models come mid-August. 5700 non-XT blower is alright, due to low power.

General
>AMD is always trash
>Yes, adaptive sync (free/g/sync) is important for gaming
>NVMe isn't better than SATA SSD for gaming
>Don't use Speccy
>Don't trust sites which rank CPUs by arbitrary, obfuscated scores (eg userbenchmark, passmark, cpuboss)

Who does the absolute best overclocked vs overclocked CPU benchmarks?
I always use multiple sources but I really need to see overclocked 4 core 4 thread intel(6600k, 7600k, 8350k, 9350k/kf), 96, 97, 9900k, and Ryzen 3600, 3800.
It's always just one processor overclocked or only a few.
The intel parts in particular show differences in performance from sku to sku but its almost always because they're being run at stock.
I'm trying to see if it is at all worth it to sell my 6600k and mobo for $200 or so and spend the extra $1-300 for a new cpu+mobo or not sell it and spend the extra $1-300 on a more powerful GPU.

He is right though. 75hz and 60hz the 2600 is what you should buy. 144hz budget is 9600k/3600(he should add that), 144hz non-budget is 9700k.
9900k truly is the best for video editing because of SMT and acceleration with the igpu in premier.

>> No.72212897

Friendly reminder that just like with the i7 5775C the next gen intel desktop CPUs will not only further pass Zen 2 in games via slight clock speed and cache improvements but the EDRAM on the chip from the iris graphics will bring it yet further.
If the overclocked 9700k is 10% faster than the overclocked 3800X then the 10700K will be 20%.

It seems like this case almost puts the Corsair Carbide Spec-04 TG to shame. SPC makes fantastic budget cases with premium build quality and all the functionality you'll need. This one in particular has perfect air flow, has the ability to mount 8 fans, has magnetic dust filters, easy to clean, sturdy, and has plenty of room for cable routing. I might just return the Carbide if my CPU Cooler doesn't fit and if i can't mount all the fans in the front.

I was going to get this today but the one they had in the stock room in X-Kom was dented on the top panel towards the rear harder than the RX 5700 XT. It looked like someone sat on it. It was pretty funny. Also, they make fantastic fans. The Zephyr 120 PWM at 1400 RPM for less than 5$ is also a godsend.

There's no confirmation that they're bringing back EDRAM (though it would make sense).
If they do, it likely won't be until 10nm desktop chips in 2021.
It's also reasonable to assume that Zen3 or Zen4 is going to have something similar to EDRAM for their own big IPC and gaming perf increases. This isn't something only Intel can do. The difference is that with AMD, there's less socket changes required and better post-launch support.

I've often said that the 5775C (and 5930k) were the last Intel CPUs worth buying. I used to recommend the 5775C a lot
those years ago. Obviously they should go back to that. But they could have done that with the 9900k already, and it may have justified its cost, yet they didn't.

Anyway, stop telling people to "just wait" for something in 2021, after the intel shill already lead one-paid-retarded-person war when the OP said people should wait a single month for Zen2.

>>72212958
4+4 and 6+2 isn't the same. You need an 6+2.

>>72212871
They're a lot better and can do some playable older 30fps gaming on budget laptops, but they're not nearly as good as AMD's integrated.
A 2x performing increase still has them having only a little better than 1/3rd the performance of AMD's iGPUs.
I'd be surprised if the new Ice Lake will even match the perf/watt of the 3700U in graphics tests. I'd be surprised if it's even half as good. And that's Zen+, not Zen2.

GPU is starting to die after years of daily use. One of the fans doesn't spin any more and it stutters even in non-demanding games. I only want to replace the GPU (if possible) and my only use is gaming. I play at 1920x1080 because muh 144Hz. My budget is £250. I'm already building a new system but i also feel like retrofitting my current one. I got it in 2015. I started refurbishing it 2 months ago, long overdue. I worry it might be too late for my GPU though. The artifacting still doesn't stop even after i changed the thermal paste, cleaned out the heatsink, reinstalled Windows 8.1 and the Catalyst drivers. It could however be the fact that i have to pull on the card when screwing it into the expansion slot, which could be disrupting the PCIE slot's connection. I recently noticed some abnormal coil whine from my PSU 2 days ago when reinstalling the OS too. I also feel like replacing my motherboard with a B or Z variant for overclocking. I can't find any though, and the one's that are there seem to be stuck at their original MSRP.

How worthwhile are the radeon anti-lag and the sharpening features at 1440p?

I know ray tracing is a meme but I'm sort of deciding between 5700 XT and 2080 super. With the 2080s I just wouldn't need to worry about shit for a good long while and if ray tracing actually memes itself into existence it should be strong enough to actually use it. I guess we'll call it the lazy man's pricier option here.

Now if I got a 5700 XT I'd basically be sitting on it for big Navi and then selling it and getting a 5800 5900(?) XT depending on how it all performs next to nvidias bullshit. Since the price gouge is real for Nvid, I'd either end up using less money (not a huge factor) or ending up around the same.

Why do you need more than two 3.5 bays?
Modern cases have 2.5 SSD mounting options everywhere, modern Mobos have NVME slots.

Your boot and game drives would be either of those. If you need a fucking dinosaur HDD, youve got provisions for 2 of them still.
Its not that surprising that people are opting out of adding large, airflow constricting HD cages that nobody wants or uses.

The first fucking thing I did to my Fractal R4 was to pull the cage out of it.

I've been happy with MSI mobo with my 4790k

but I am considering getting a 3900X so I can have VM spooled up for different uses.

1) Will a NVME drive be critical over SSDs for VMs? I probably could just run the VMs on seperate smaller SSDs for cheaper rather than running them all on one high performance NVME.

2) What mobo brand and generation for AM4 socket? What to avoid? 10Gbe has been a thing for a while but what about 2.5Gbe? I have a NAS with 4 1 Gbe connections and havent yet upgraded it to 10Gbe.. not sure if its really worth it but maybe 2.5 is?

My 1600 and 1060 6gb even with the settings jacked down far was severely crippled in outdoor raids and ran only kind of decentish in regular ones. You need a few setting put up in order to properly see the ground AoE and what not, which is obnoxious. Why do they use the 3900x as the standby "best AMD CPU for vidya" shenanigans? Is it because of the bigger cache or just some "flagship" memery? My 3800x readily beats it in vidya and PBO currently pushes it into the average 4.4 and 4.5 range even with the immature bios / drivers which is a decent bit higher than what a 3900x ever reaches on it's own.

Your CPU is largely equivalent to a $50 2c/4t chip now days. There is no point in getting more than an RX570 for it. Even that is probably going to push it and make you feel the stutters, but there's no point in getting a lesser GPU that's worse price/performance.

>>72213820
Zen2 does get a bit warm as the high density of 7nm makes it more difficult to cool, but the high voltage is what it's designed for.

>>72213915

Yes, that's fine for 1080p gaming.

>>72213954
Why would pleb tier 1080p have "good monitors"?
All the good monitors are 1440p. People who can't afford 1440p don't care about good monitors, so they aren't made.

>>72214017
212 isn't a good cooler. Who cares if it can't fit? As you point out, it's much too tall for its cooling performance and price.

Should do around 80% of the target resolution. That's only 75%. 80% would be 2752x1152. It is good and should run that fine in most games.

>>72214743
No it upscales ~1728p to look +/- as good as 4k. In some games like BFV, which are blurry to start with, it largely looks better than 4K. In other cases, native 4K is better. Better than DLSS, either way.
To upscale 1440p all the way up to 4K is too much of a stretch.

When people shill that the 9900k is 5% better on average, they are ignoring that it uses TWICE as much power for that 5% advantage.
A 5GHz overclock 9900k typically uses around 210W in gaming, whereas a 3900X with PBO auto-OC only uses around 110W. And the 3700X only around 60-80W.

Also, Ryzen is just generally more responsive when running multiple programs at once, tabbing between them, etc, with its 10x faster context switching time.
