I've been using my new desktop for a couple months now but then grabbed my T430 to go to a friend's house and its suddenly running like shit. Many hours of Windows updates later and its still running weird; choppy and slow.

It's got a good quad core cpu, an SSD and 8gb ram, plus TPFanControl running on an aggressive curve; there should be no reason why its running so slowly

>basically perfect condition (some standard small scuffs on the lid)

I'd get T61 unless you want that 15" 4:3. T60 can't have more than 3GB RAM so you're constantly swapping if you open any modern web browser. They're probably both painfully slow.

Here in Poland you can find T60 and T61 in under 30$. Often they are damaged/locked though and it takes a lot of patience to find a good one. Fuck, I got 15" T60 for 25$ and it sits there waiting until I have spare money for an SSD because it's awfully slow with that old HDD.

Upgrade to 16GB RAM
For quad core you should have **only** i7-3840QM or an underclocked/volted XM (go high or go home) with dedicated GPU fan/heat pipe assembly.

Absolutely.
I bought one with that Saniter kit from Aliexpress.
Forget the washers they pack in with it, the lcd bezel pushes onto the LCD if you install washers and you get bleeding all around.
Trick is to fit the board behind the panel but first you have to remove the wire harness and leave the bare wires flat.
The board itself doesn't interfere with panel but the cables on the end are too thick and push onto the screen causing the distortions.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/SANITER-LCD-controller-board-kit-LVDS-cable-1920X1080-IPS-1080P-FHD-Screen-Kit-for-thinkpad-T430/32891792274.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.6e824c4dQJqdMs

this is the kit i bought, i sourced the lcd panel 2nd hand from ebay.

I don't regret it, its the best mod money can buy, also screen is better than my Dell U2412M monitor.

Since i managed to unwrap the cables i get perfect picture, 0 problems.
Only thing that's bad its that the B140.. panels are very sensitive to bending, and when you move the screen you get temporary bleeding all around which disappears once the screen is stable in place.

With similar prices p1 seems to be a better buy and the weight is almost the same. So why would I go t480 then? P1 seems to be a bit overkill for me performancewise but more power is always better, right?
Or maybe I should wait a month for t490 specked like that t480? I can obly go with new thinkpad, as the conpany is buying it for me.

It's hit and miss, some are refurb and even them can weird out sometimes.
So it's a modem slot and not wi-fi, then it may work if you'll find the right M.2. My Samsung M.2 didn't fit in the modem slot on Zbook G1.

T420. You can't go wrong with a T420.
T430 if you wanna change the keyboard to a T420 keyboard.
T400 without a dGPU if you want libreboot.
Replace the 4 in any of the above if you want a 15.4" laptop instead of 14". You may also get some other cool stuff if you go for a T5xx for example the T500 has a display port and the T400 doesn't.
About that light gaming, how light is it exactly? The T500 can play minecraft at ~45 fps but gets kinda hot. The T420 with a dGPU would be better for that.

I currently have a T420 with HDD and 4GB RAM with Linux Mint running on it.
Trying to run IntelliJ on it kills the computer pretty much. It takes up to 5 minutes to start the program and will freeze for nearly everything I try to do. Running simple programs from inside the IDE (a few lines of code, nothing complex) can take up to 1 minutes to build and execute.
Obviously, that's not really something one can work with. I want to be able to run a browser in the background, work on the IDE and have my file manager in the background, without lags if possible. Is upgrading my RAM to 8GB enough? Do I also need a SSD on top of it? Or anything else I can do?
