Audiophiles are basically living evidence that you can be addicted to placebo. I doubt even they know what these things are supposed to achieve. Usually it's marketed as having better shielding or some shit, or isolating signals, but they don't really care. They are literally chasing some nonexistent high of having the absolute best or purest or whatever-the-fuck sound at any cost, much like a crack-head chases that first, super-intense high.

Except higher-quality crack actually usually exists.

Audiophiles have the same brain structure you do. You are susceptible to the same manipulative practices and you fall for them regularly without realizing it.

A documentary like
>>68589761
wants would be boring. It'd just be people going about their unremarkable lives, probably making mostly rational decisions. Audiophiles are wrong, but they aren't abnormal. That's the problem.
Science gives us the capacity for progress but not the guarantee. "Rational" audio holds little allure for most people because it's been stagnant for decades. Most products showing real progress just get shot down under suspicion of being manipulative, while actual manipulative shit offers people what your derision can't: a hobby and a sense of belonging.

You are gatekeeping for the audiophiles without you (or them) realizing it, and lazy companies reap the reward.

The electrical field in the wires extends out of the cable for a distance, (in most cable designs).
If you have a special meter which can measure such fields, you can 'see' them around cheap powercords, and cheaper speaker cables (even plenty of expensive ones)
You do not want that field to be interacting with something just on one side, since it will mess it up
Air is a GREAT insulator, and a great place to run a cable so the field is not messed with.
The cable riser can lift the cable into all air surrounding it, and cause the least damage too the field.
The very best idea for cable risers is to suspend the cable via thin threads from above.

Literally any Yamaha A/V receiver from Goodwill and maybe a bluetooth add-on will sound perfect, given that it is set up correctly.
Perception to the differences high end DACs make are much harder to discern with speakers in a living room than with headphones at a desk, and even then it'll probably drive your headphones perfectly fine.

What the heck is it? Brilliant Pebbles is a unique and comprehensive system for tuning the room and audio system based on special physical properties of highly symmetrical crystal structures. Brilliant Pebbles has been evolving since its introduction 6 years ago at the London HI Fi Show, especially the number of applications, many of which were discovered by our customers. Brilliant Pebbles addresses specific resonance control and RFI/EMI absorption problems associated with audio electronics, speakers and cables, as well as acoustic wave problems associated with the listening room boundaries and the 3-dimensional space within the boundaries. Brilliant Pebbles comprises a number of precious and semi-precious stones (crystals) selected for their effectiveness. The original glass bottles for Brilliant Pebbles have been replaced by clear zip lock bags, which have a more linear response than glass. We employ a number of highly-specialized, proprietary techniques in the preparation/assembly of Brilliant Pebbles to enhance the crystals' inherent characteristics. The fundamental operating principle of Brilliant Pebbles involves a number of atomic mechanisms in the crystals. Brilliant Pebbles will enhance the performance of your audio system so your favorite music and even your experience playing online fantasy games will become a mind blowing auditory experience.

I think the word audiophile has lost its meaning

like sure making fun of cables and stuff is one thing but people also use it to make fun of people buying expensive equipment which also is just as subjective many times.

its basically guys just hating on other guys opinions of superiority of technology.

like people say people lissening to things over 320kbs is a "audiophile" now as well.

larphing at it and saying there is no gain in the extreams (there might actually be like a 0.00001% gain desu) is also used to discredit gains of buying like a 100$ thing vs a 200$ thing.

its kinda dumb in all. like obviously people talking on forums about subjective expensive things some people with the means will take it to extreams

honestly I have had experiences on the other extream where like a literally 0$ tape/cd combo player from the 90/2000s imo with a cassette sounds as good for vocals and some things as like a 20,000$ setup.

at the end of the day its just people comparing ownership to ego which is retarded so even making fun of them is dumb. and even the people saying the high end extreams are dumb are as dumb as me saying a 0$ tape/cd player sounds good. but the reality is there is actual a point to both.

>> No.68593260

also ive seen really dumb things on /g/ where people say lissening to live music is worse quality than lissening at home.

like don't you get it its about reproducing live performance.

ultimately going to a live show is how you train your ears. sure if they use electrical instruments they are limited by the speakers and stuff.

but stand up close and actually lessen to vocals and atmosfear and stuff and that's how you figure out what real good audio is.

if you are just buying 800$ dacs and shit to play some shit you downloaded and never go to gigs you are a fucking retard.

>> No.68593306

and also if you don't get why all these like 40+year old men are acting crazy about audio its because they had experiences in their teens and 20s at live shows opera etc that changed their life and they want to to recapture it.

there would be a minority that didn't have profound experiences around music in their past and are just doing it for ego and money showing shit. but imo such people wouldn't be as crazy about it as the ones that actually did.

you are absolutely right about listening to live performances of ACCOUSTIC instruments to get a comparative point.

the first time i understood what the whole audiophile autism was all about was when (by chance) i got my hands on a pair of old magnepan III loudspeakers....oooh boy do i get it now!

-yes, there is a spacial/3D type of thing goin on when you close your eyes and just listen.

-you need a well produced recording, this does NOT happens with all material/music(this is why audio-autist are so picky about source recordings, mastering etc...)

-with good loudspeakers is easy to identify if something is well recorded because it will have that "spacial clarity" and it will have good dynamics others will sound just "flat" not convincing, some recordings may have good bass or good highs but that's not it, that spacial/dynamic characterystic is what really pulls you to that new level of autism.

-i'm not using expensive equipement just a lowly aiwa receiver (cx z82) and my computer as the source, regular cables, the only thing special is the magnepan speakers.

-i agree with audiophiles sadly headphones do not do the same "trick" (although i use headphones much more that my loudspeakers...)

best 5 minutes "lecture" about Hi-Fi:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZGsEu0VDiE

example of a good recording ("folk singer" by muddy waters):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX4NK_SKvvc

i do not consider myself an audiophile because finally i think i'm much more interested "in the music than the audio" (that's why many musician don't give a shit about all this) but the audiophile sound experience is definitely something intoxicating.

You need thicker gauge if you are actually connecting high power PA-gear. Lower power speakers don't need thick wires obviously.

Basically this. It's one thing to care about good audio, but generally when you talk about "audiophiles" you're talking about the people who straight up ignore actual scientific evidence showing them there's no difference between a $5 copper cable and their $350 kitty-litter filled garden hose that was marketed as "high end."

An interesting "scam" would be laser headphones.
Instead of a copper wire, you use fiber, and this fiber carries a laser that is powerful enough to feed the speakers.

Are integrated amplifier prices a scam?

Aren't all transparent amps indistinguishable from one another? If so, why the fuck would you spend $1800 on a Hegel H90? Could someone tell the difference between a Yamaha R-S202 versus the Hegel?

Also, don't all DACs sound the same? Has anyone ever actually done an A-B blind test with them to determine this?

My recent venture into the audiophile world has gotten me thinking this, as I've seen no proof otherwise, and I'm currently convinced that the speaker design is still 97% (barring room acoustics) determinant of sound quality.

>> No.68598872

>>68598683
That would be the definition of transparency, that you are unable to distinguish them. A tautology.
Amplifiers designed conventionally don't impart much of a sound besides noise and clipping at the maximum current/voltage output. You can largely read the spec to see how good it is and see it benched to make sure they didn't cheat the numbers too much.
>don't all DACs sound the same
If you use a high-gain, low-noise amp with sensitive speakers, you might hear something (noise floor). Most "normal" people get DACs for inputs and features, or to suppress noise and interference that their existing integrated converters may not.
You could grandly screw up your audio DAC by trying to defy conventional approaches without a better alternative. You can also find weird DACs that are designed to alias. These types are for the weirdo audiophiles who want to toss money at things, not sensible consumer designs.
>Hegel...Yamaha
You would probably be better off with a more powerful amplifier, whether integrated or separate. I have to think that those features can be effectively had for less.
Keep in mind that a large chunk of what you pay for in hi-fi is appearances and dealer markups.

An even spatial response, a smooth sensitivity, and low distortions make the good loudspeaker.

The differences in integrated amps mostly come from their preamp section. Higher quality ones have lower noise floors and better implementations of the RIAA EQ curve on the phono side of things.
However, I'd much rather buy a good preamp and a nice power amp, since almost all power amps really are transparent if they meet a minimum spec. Hell, I'd say using a good preamp and only the power side of an integrated could beat a top end integrated no problem.

Not going to defend crazy audiophiles, but there is definitely a difference between something like 192bit vs anything higher.
I personally set it to 224 vbr or something like that in '99 and then went to 320bit when i had to get my ears cleaned.

Went deaf for like a day because my ears finally clogged themselves with shit.
After my doctor used a giant syringe to clean my ears out, dumping out crusty rocks out, i was able to hear the air move around inside a closed room from people just moving around. It was like the air and my hair was scraping against my ears. Shit was surreal.
It's basically like getting glasses after finding out that your vision wasn't 20/20, where the world is suddenly clear and bolder than you thought it was.

Apparently my nasty earwax protected my hearing into my 20s so that i could appreciate music better and i started switching higher end stuff. There is definitely diminishing returns though, especially with higher end headphones, where shit just starts sounding different instead of better. Lossless isn't/wasn't worth it, but SACD is nicer. I've heard SACD is only better because of the remastering, but it's hard to compare, as that shit is expensive and basically dead.

First time on /g/, not sure where to post this but it's an audio question so. . . .

I'm about 90% deaf from gunfire. I can't hear shit. In particular, I can't hear mosquitoes. My eyesight is also constantly changing because of diabetes so it's hard to spot them.

How sensitive of a microphone would I need to be able to detect mosquitos? With a four-microphone tetrahedral setup, how difficult would it be to give a rough location?

I've been battling one for three days now and it's fucking miserable. It's in my apartment, I've almost killed it several times but my goddamned electric mosquito rackets BOTH turned out to have low charges. I couldn't tell at first whether I was missing it (eyesight) or what, but I should have absolutely destroyed it when I spotted it on a curtain and it just flew right through racket number two.

All I want is to be able to know when one is in my apartment (one giant room loft style), or better yet have some indication of WHERE it is so that I can go after it.

Would a basic laptop microphone be sufficient for detection? Or would I need some sort of $20,000 high end studio microphone?

Anyone know of existing software that can detect the audio signature of a flying mosquito? I know there are glass-break sensors that work by listening for the unique sound.

HEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!! This little bastard bites constantly and itches like crazy.

It's called the magnetic field and thats why you buy nice, insulated cables. Of course, there's basically no way stray magnetic fields will affect electricity flow in a shielded cable unless you're talking about enough magnetic inductance to burn through said cable

Electricity creates magnetic fields, not the other way around(unless you're moving, which isn't what we're talking about), and that fundamental misunderstanding has cost stupid people a lot of money
