>> No.68431744

I agree that they have reduced sound quality compared to many other headphones at the same price range due to ANC adding slight hiss andd so on in silent environments.

HOWEVER, the fact that most of them reduce background noise by 25-27dB which is over 80% perceived noise gone (>99% actual) improves the sound quality far more than what you would get with passive closed headphones.
ANC is worthless if you want something to listen at home, but a superior choice if most of the listening you do is during daily commutes or noisy work environments.

>> No.68431897

That's an extreme fringe case to go against using ANC. Besides the vast majority of people who use non-ANC headphones tend to boost their volume so loud that they wouldn't hear anything anyway. What you're saying is not specific to noise canceling.

Idol trash here. What's your setup like, Anon?
>>68429621 and possibly >>68431256 (if you're the same anon for some reason)
That's wrong. The HD599 will sound horrible next to HD600 out of motherboard audio, and that's not just because HD600 outclasses it.
The HD599 is particularly sensitive to motherboard outputs, which typically have a high impedance, due to a large peak of impedance at the upper bass area. This causes them to sound veiled.
These measurements should help you see that:
And this article from nwavguy should help you understand why this is so: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/02/headphone-impedance-explained.html
The difference between a motherboard and a low output impedance amp is radical. When I got my first external amp, my HD598 sounded immediately very different and better.
And then I got the HD600. The improvement of HD600 on HD598 is large with an amp, and it is huge without an amp.
>>68431256 (if you're a different anon)
If you can't afford HD600 do look at HD579 instead of HD599. It's basically the same or better for cheaper. See reviews and FR.
As for DT990, it's v-shaped, I suggest not to bother.

With Christmas approaching, I wanna get my dad a nice pair of headphones. The dude's been working with audio equipment his entire life though, while I know next to nothing. He really wants a nice pair of headphones that sound "flat", or something like that. I could be wrong on the exact terminology, but basically he wants headphones that won't emphasize shit like bass and what-not. Are there any good headphones like this for under $200?

>> No.68432976

Bullshit, I complained about them being uncomfortable in this very thread.
I'll make myself more clear.

The HD600's are the most uncomfortable headphones I have ever worn.
I've worn many headphones over the years that cause hot spots after a few hours that hurt. But never have I worn a headphone that causes instant discomfort. The HD600's do.
The foam inside the earcup protecting the driver is a fucking joke and has no reason to be that rough and your ears WILL touch it, because the 'ear shaped cups' are too fucking shallow.

>The impedance of a headphone is largely determined by the driver's voice coil, and for Beyerdynamic's high-impedance models the voice coil's wire is super-thin, just 0.018mm, half the thickness of a human hair. Beyerdynamic's Senior Product Manager Gunter Weidemann explained that manufacturing voice coils from fine wire is extremely complicated, so the company makes all of its high-impedance headphones in Germany.

>The thinner wires have more windings (layers of wire) on the voice-coil than the lower-impedance Beyerdynamic headphones, which have thicker and heavier, easier-to-manufacture voice coils. The lower moving mass of the 250- and 600-ohm headphones' voice coils is lighter than the 32-ohm models, and the lower mass is part of the reason high-impedance headphones sound better. The smaller diameter of the 600-ohm voice coil wires allows the wires to fit tighter, so there's less air between the windings, and that makes the electromagnetic field of the voice coil stronger. All of that reduces distortion for the high-impedance versions compared with the low-impedance headphones.

While it's true that impedance matching can play a part in the sound you are able to get from your headphones, this game is constantly changing. The advent of low-impedance planar magnetic headphones from Audeze and Oppo are of particular significance. For the vast majority of people, buying a pair of Oppo PM-3 headphones (26 ohms and $399) will provide, from merely a smartphone, an experience of sonic euphoria not easily trumped without spending several multiples more and tweaking the sound signature with complicated equalization. I have both the Oppo PM3s and the DT880s (250 ohms) and it's not even close. The PM3s trounce the DT880s even when the DT880s are matched with the Centrance HiFi M8 headphone amplifier ($699) and the PM3s are running straight out of my phone.

source: motherboard
type: full sized, closed
comfort: pretty comfy, i often sleep while wearing my headphones so i dont want them to cause pain over the night
sound signature: neutral i guess? i just want a flat sound without any major distortions in bass or treble
past headphones: ive had the audio-technica m40x for the past two years and i really like the comfort and how they sound, but the build quality is a real issue. that is, ive had to replace the earpads once because of how quickly they deteriorate; and the hinge on the earpad has snapped and superglue failed to repair it

There must be at least a couple anons left here that still go with earbuds over IEMs. I'm looking at the Ourart Ti7, Willsound MK2, and Svara L, does anyone have experience with any of them?
Also, I'm in need of a pair with ear hooks or other securing mechanism that will stay in my ears during sprints. Any recommendations?

>> No.68438300

One of my IEM pieces (pair of Campfire Orions) makes buzzing noise when pushed deeper into ear. Depending on fit, sometimes no push needed, just few steps so it changes position slightly.
It only happens with music playing, and it's not a cable issue, even with channels reversed it's always one piece buzzing.

What are possible culprits? Earwax/dirt piece on BA driver?

Great, then sure there's one with measurements you can point at?

Buy your source according to your headphones, never the other way around.
Headphones are the most important component as for the actual sound.

Schiit stack vs The Element?

I find the switch on the element kino for going speakers. I don't care about schiit bit more power.

>> No.68439076

the headphones need to be closed for sound isolation reasons and suitable for any kind of music (he mostly listens to electronic music though) but honestly he doesn't know anything about audio and will be happy no matter what I get him. I'm just not sure what impedance of headphones will work best with the source he's going to be using

>> No.68439117

More neutral, still slightly v-shaped, better all-rounded.
And no impedance bullshit, plug anywhere and be fine.

This is an amp used to power speakers, it has fucking 70W output. You can drive any headphones with that on like 5% volume, so go for the 250. Or consider the DT880 if you don't need closed headphones, again the highest impedance available, not sure if that's 250 or 600 on those.

from last thread: im thinking of getting Sennheiser HD 280 PRO again. i've had them before and they were great. i also had Sennheiser HD 598 and i did not notice a sound difference between them and the 280. i like the 280 because they had great noise cancellation and a large bass. i did not like the 598 because they leaked sound ALOT and were not that much better despite being more expensive

$100 price point from microcenter

>598 because they leaked sound ALOT
What was your volume percentage on Windows?
my open back sennheisers dont leak a lot. Though they are not the 598 and I usually leave my volume at 20%.

Of course they are going to leak.

yea i know that they leak but they leaked ALOT they were basically speakers at 100% my 280 didnt leak that much

>> No.68440152

>> No.68440162

280 ain't going to leak that much cause they are closed. If you got the HD 598 open then yeah they barely have any ways to stop leakage. Mines at 100% volume do sound like small speakers maybe a little stronger than a phone at full volume with good speakers on them.

New pair of headphones.

>> No.68440282

speaker amps usually just put a bunch of resistors before the headphone out so they don't blow up the headphones, the result is rather high output impedance which can fuck up the frequency response of the headphone, you should get the 250ohm to prevent this but is possible the headphone out on that receiver doesn't have enough power to drive them to a loud enough volume
