Hi /spg/, I just bought a Galaxy S9 as an upgrade from my old S6. I'm mostly enjoying it, but as a ricefag I hate the inconsistency of the notification bar at the bottom. I know I can hide it, but if I want to use the back or recents features, I have to swipe up and recall the bar. Is there a way I can map the functionality through gestures? I'd like to swipe in from the edge of the screen for back and up from the bottom for recents (home is always hard press at the bottom).

Also, there's a lot of advice out there for preserving battery health long-term. Should I charge my phone all the time and let the machine regulate how and when the battery is charged? Should I only charge when battery is low? Should I charge small amounts throughout the day?

>> No.67900629

LG v10 was the only good V phone. Actually thick and durable. Stainless steel sides and a 3M rubber grip backplate. The V20 claims to have some kind of military grade aluminum or some shit yet it bends super easily and if you drop it the backplate pops off really easily. As for the rest, they're shit and the US models removed the quality DAC inside which is what I cared for the most.

>> No.67900704

As long as you don't let it go below 10% there's no need to worry. Yes keeping it between 30 and 80% and charging in small bursts is the way to keep the battery healthy the longest, but it's not worth it being a slave to your phone when the benefits are so minimal.

LG is one of the manufacturers who actually uses multi lens setups for sensible purposes; the portrait fake bokeh is lame, but having several focal lengths in one phone is quite cool if you're snapping pictures all the time. Basically optical zoom.

6t won't have a headphone jack though. So just buy the 6 if that is important to you. Or the pocophone for a little savings if you don't need that NFC or OLED.

>> No.67903790

Stop with this bullshit. Xiaomi has outright said the only way they can make their phones cheap is if they offer microservices on the side. I'm not buying a phone where I'm the product, sorry, I'm just not. Xiaomi will eventually enforce ads, and go ahead and flash a shitty ROM on your Poco F1, but honestly $200 really isn't that much money.

>> No.67903853

Yeah, was waiting for the 6t but it's just not a good fit. Want the headphone jack. If it had wireless charging, maybe would've compromised. Also never use nfc. Thanks for the RAM answer.

Xiaomi makes money on the margin on their phones, that's what tgeir CEO has said multiple times, including earnings calls. Xiaomi makes more money off their other products, but they make money on their phones because they move MASSIVE amounts of units, both of these reasons are why they can afford to sell their phones at the price levels they do. It's not microservices you utter pillock, and if you're not gonna buy a phone where you're the product then guess what, you're not buying a smartphone because every fucking Android handset makes (You) the product, same thing with Apple but their complete shitbags for making their blind faggot followers pay the exorbitant prices they do for their devices then charge for their cloud, iTunes, and on top of all that, sell your fucking data.

After recently acquiring a Galaxy Note 4, being utterly disappointed in it, and reading how the whole Note series is a mess from 4 to 7, I've started to feel distrust for Samsung as a phone company. Their phones always have some bullshit defect that kills the unit after a while. And thays not mentioning how they try to fuck their phones with pointless updates that erode the battery. Mid tier phones are already good:
>midrange processors are already perfectly able to perform well enough to carry everyday tasks without a hitch
>since the "premium feel" has to be reserved to flagships, they have a plastic back and/or chassis, which is a huge plus durability wise
>since they can't boast any flagship specs, producers focus on utilitarian features like battery capacity and power efficient CPU
>since the latest newest hot trend in design (i.e. the latest iPhone design) is prerogative of the fashion statement embodied in flagships, midrange phones are actually free of all the nonsense that Apple does every time

i always hated plastic screen protectors because they feel shitty, maybe that's changed by now. I just order 5 glass ones from china for two bucks and swap them once they break up to badly.

shit doesn't need to be sharp to scratch your display glass, just hard. Sand can contain corundum and shit which will be more than hard enough to scratch your display, but it won't go through a plastic screen protector (simply because it won't scratch it deep enough in most situations)

The only way it could get it to not register the touch (although it don't know if that's just the app spazzing out or the phone fucking up) is by dislocating a few fingers, making a gang sign and hitting the lower 5 things at once. 4 works fine, with 5 at the same time it doesn't want to register.

>Isn't that the rumoured setup of the upcoming Galaxy S10?

>So Samsung copied from LG?
No. Smartphones take time to develop. LG and Samsung likely independently started working on phones with three or more rear cameras after seeing the success Huawei had with the triple rear camera P20 Pro. Samsung already launched the A7 2018 with three rear cameras before LG launched the V40, just with a different combination of lenses (regular, wide-angle and depth sensor). Samsung will also be launching a smartphone with four rear camera sensors later this month (primary, depth sensor, wide angle, telephoto):

Not to forget the five camera Nokia 9:

That's more of a preference. If the headphone is important then it's no question. The other new features seem minor to me

Have the mi 8 right now same shit. It's horrible

I have a mi8 in hand it looks pretty good so far. It feels nice it really is just a iPhone clone in design. It has most of the standard features and nothing that glaringly stands out. There is some weirdness in software like fullscreen mode for Snapchat. Software updates is about average. If you do a google search it looks like they updated most of their most popular phone line up fro. 2016 and up. So phones can expect about 2-3 years update which is average.

The thing is, I couldn't find any concrete evidence they did, or even if that was a problem in the first place. So which one is actually better today at saving battery charge?

The back is plastic but it feels nice and structurally very sound. The front is glad like verywhere else. And for most people it'll end up in a case anyways. As for performance and build quality, check any of the reviews. For the price it's a rock solid device

What other phones have near pure Android on them? The last Samsung and Sony phones I had were full of bloat. The Moto was good for the first six months or so, and now it's a wreck.

I'm interested in the Sony Xperia XZ3, but that's $900. The XA3 leak looks interesting, but its release is probably ways off.

Hi /spg/, I've never had a smartphone before and have no idea where to start in looking for one. Here's the kinds of features I want:

>A standard headphone jack

about 300 bucks but it varies depending on where you live and what exactly you want.

>won't completly rape my privacy
if you care about that you'll need something with good custom ROM support. Or you just accept that big daddy google and possibly the chinks knows everything about you but you're to small a gear for that to cause any harm to you personally.

>> No.67914594

if you can live with something 5mm higher get the pocophone

>> No.67914602

Depends on where you live. Pocophone would be ideal if it supports your carrier's bands and you flash a custom ROM on it, generally priced $300 and up. Otherwise look into older flagships, bit pricier and you would still need to at least root to be able to control some of the botnet. Since mobage is rarely optimized you want a large battery and as fast a cpu as you can find

>> No.67914621

That's better than I was expecting. Am I pretty much just looking at Android, or are there any current iPhone models with those features? Are emulators even available for iOS?

Also acceptance seems to be the best approach, and just not putting any dumb shit on the Google account tied to my phone. You can make a fake identity for an Android phone's account like any other Google account, can't you?

This is a good way to go about it, since Google can figure out who you are if they want by just reading contacts.

Specs look great but I'm going from 4,5" and S8 size is the biggest I'm willing to get. Plus I really really don't like notches.

>or are there any current iPhone models with those features?
no current models with headphone jack or expendable storage. Also quite expensive. No clue about emulators, i guess they should surely be available.

sure you can use a fake identity for your google account. But the only thing that'd really cause you any personal harm is 3rd party actors getting access to your accounts and literally stealing your shit. Which doesn't really happen if you are not retarded. Google doesn't care if you use a fake identity or not, the data they mine from you is worth just as much. Doesn't matter to them if it's tied to you real name or mr suckstrannydick programmingsocks
