If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot-compatible models:
>T60 (check lcd), X60(s/t); X200(s/t. -s requires soldering), T400(s)/500; W500.

Modern models:
>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, both Coreboot-compatible (Ivy Bridge CPU support on T420); Quad Core Compatible, Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>T520/530; W520/530 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440s - don't ever buy this meme
>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, up to 64GB of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive.

Upgraded models:
>X210 - X200/X201, i5 8250u quadcore
>X62 - X61, i5 5250u
>T70 - T60, i7 7700 hq
IPS displays, USB 3.0, m.2 x4, mini dp, no

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>The best TrackPoint™, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Any ThinkPad could do that. I would personally recommend the X series because they're small and portable, but it depends if you want a bigger display or not. Any ThinkPad will do. Just don't buy anything over xx30. xx40 ThinkPad can have problems with Linux.

Also, if you're going to use Linux, you might as well avoid models with dedicated GPUs. Driver support is non-existent and you don't really need them at all.

As a guy who used to work there, there's a lot more legal handcuffs than all that, but you aren't about to convince anyone around here of that. NSA doesn't collect on U.S. persons, and most U.S. companies are not very willing to work with NSA. The laws that are in place to prevent government agencies from unlawfully encroaching on your rights are followed as far as I know. I can't tell you if there's some super dark double-secret group somewhere doing something spooky, but if there is it's probably CIA or FBI anyway. Also
>unlimited budget
Fucking lol.
There's no government cabal trying to fuck you. No one cares that much about individuals unless you're causing problems.

Regardless of all that, the government is supposed to have a hard time doing its job. The more shit in their way, the better. Part of the reason I stopped working there is because I lost faith in the mission, not because the government is out to get you, but because the government is literally just people taking shots in the dark and making up excuses to spend your tax dollars.

NEVER stop telling the government they are reaching too far. Your response to the government asking for any particular portion of your rights should be to doggedly resist until it becomes readily apparent that it's absolutely necessary to preserve social function.

inb4 you ask me anything, even if I was willing to tell you shit (I'm not, shit is classified because literally everything can be weaponized, especially information), everything is compartmentalized specifically to make sure no one person knows too much

Not a whole lot. The only thing that could be remotely useful is the MAC address (if that person is on the same LAN as you) and the UUID of your CPU. If you have the money to spare, then probably yes for convenience.

Personally I would go decent desktop + T430 or something though which is probably more cost effective. Obviously lacks some convenience.
But could probably spend £1200 on the desktop + monitor(s) and pick up a decent T430 with the remainder and have cash for a FHD upgrade for the T430. For less than the base price of the P52 (and you'd want at least some upgrades).

You've also got the option of getting an earlier desktop replacement thinkpad. I'd argue that for everything other than extremely intensive work, a quad core i7 4xxx is probably sufficient in a W540/t540p.
If you know you need more power than that, esp. in threaded workloads then just get an 8 core Ryzen 7 or TR system, because you probably wouldn't be happy with the perf of a modern laptop i7 anyway.

He doesn't have any return policy once the thinkpad leaves the store it's yours.
But you get to test the thinkpad in person and see for yourself if something wrong.
So what/how do I check it?
>check for cracks in the chaise
>check BIOS password
Those that I could think off, maybe bring a Hiren's boot cd and test the Ram and hdd as well.
Any other tips or things I could test for? As for the battery the seller claims it is generic chink battery and guarantee to last at least 1 hour

>What's your opinion on the device?
X230 has a better CPU in terms of thermals and power efficiency. Swap over the keyboard unless you for some reason prefer chiclet, and, if you want to use X220 or chink batteries, patch the BIOS. Pop in an SSD, upgrade RAM if you really care (it's not even strictly necessary if you've got at least 4GB already, unless you're gonna be using windows 10 or Gnome or something). Get yourself a dock to be able to use meme monitors while at home. Then you've got the perfect programming/shitposting machine.

Oh yeah and make sure you get an IPS screen. If you can't find a good deal on used ones (they're pretty rare) you can buy a new one for like $70 or whatever. It's absolutely worth it if you're going to be using it often.

It can't handle complex games or stuff, and you probably shouldn't install Gentoo then compile Chromium or KDE yourself, but I got TF2 to run at about 40 FPS and Factorio runs smoothly - although they both eat up battery obviously. It handles the modern web more than well enough, though, and with the IPS screen it's even great for watching videos (whether on youtube or using mpv) unless you care a lot about the resolution.

I'm probably never changing mine for the foreseeable future (so at least 5-10 years).

>Especially the form factor compared to bigger thinkpads like T420.
Form factor was one of the main draws for me, as portability was important. 13" is just a lot more versatile than 15", you can use it on your lap pretty much anywhere if you're sitting down - such as in a crowded train. Also very comfy in bed. While doing stuff at home the dock is great since I can then use dual 24" monitors if I want to.
Good screen estate management is important, though - a twm with good workspace support is probably optimal since you won't really be using floating windows anywhere. I use dwm.

>> No.67786372

>What's your opinion on the device?
For $100, best electronic purchase I've made by far

>Especially the form factor
Form factor is really nice, it isn't thin but it is relatively powerful considering it's just a bit bigger than a netbook. You can carry it in small bags and it won't bulge much (even though the weight is considerable), even less if you're using a 6 cell.

>How's the screen size for watching videos?
Not very good, but the colors are really nice on the IPS model. I have played a few games on mine and it's okay, but i wouldn't use it for movies

>How long does the battery last, assuming the battery is 6 cell?
Mine is an old and busted 9 cell and barely lasts over 30 minutes

>> No.67786435

>Is it easy and comfortable to be handled with one arm, or in awkward positions?
Held up in one arm? Well, it's light, but it's still a bit over 1kg, so that would probably be tiring. It's great for awkward positions like in bed, though, definitely. The low weight and small size definitely make a difference there.

>How's the screen size for watching videos?
Screen size is just fine honestly, if you care you might just want to move closer. As mentioned above, it's perfect for watching in bed, because you're gonna have it close to your face anyway.
DPI is more important: I think it might be possible to do a FHD mod, but it's very rare and quite expensive (something like a $80 display ribbon cable that's only sold by one guy once every blue moon, plus the FHD display that's also a rare part and would cost a bunch). Depends on your content. I personally don't mind, but I wouldn't use it as a home theatre replacement or something.

Make sure your screen is IPS though. TN is dogshit. That really goes for most points I'm making - you can't use it in awkward positions if your screen saturation is off the scale due to the angle being awkward, for example.

>How long does the battery last, assuming the battery is 6 cell?
Hard to say, especially since it depends a lot on age and use of the battery. Very roughly I can get like 7-9 hours depending on usage from a relatively new 9 cell, so expect 4.5-6 hours from a 6 cell.
Another 9 cell I have was rather used, and lasts for 5-6 hours nowadays. And I also have a heavily used 6 cell than struggles to go past 2-2.5 hours. So if you're buying used and keeping the same battery, YMMV a lot.
If you plan on using it on the go a lot, just buy a new 9cell for $60 or whatever they go for. (Chink batteries generally last for way less long, defeating the purpose - this is one of those components where you shouldn't settle for chinkshit). You can even carry multiple batteries with you.

T420 had a dock with a USB 3.0 port, and you can add them with expresscard. The battery life isn't bad either, I'm able to get 6 hours of use out of a dead battery that's at 40% capacity after I installed and configured TLP. Material, design and usability are pure horseshit and since trackpads have grown in size nobody will ever need the little red dot

The only guys I know who fanatically advocate for Thinkpads are Fedora wearing virgins...

I don't even want to flame or anything but this is honestly my experience...

Thinkpads are performance wise average laptops with average pricing but terribly outdated design

Been thinking of buying a second IBM Thinkpad lately, but I can't really find any used laptops that haven't been used as riot shields on ebay. I'm able to replace any shitty parts of course, but finding official IBM ones at a good price is almost impossible (especially in Europe). Anyone know any good websites that sells used or refurbished pre 2004 Thinkpads in good condition?

There are some random shops that deal with refurbished memepads here and there.
But usually for the same price or more expensive than on eBay.

What I really dislike about commercial used thinkpad sellers is how they almost never provide original photos of the device you'll end up getting. And the description of the condition is vague.
So you might get lucky and get a barely used one, or get a completely scratched and damaged piece of shit.

I have made the best experiences with private sellers who provide original photos.

>> No.67793491

Depends on how broken and scratched would be okay for you.

If you don't mind how it looks as long as it functions, there are always some trashy, abused thinkpads on ebay in your price range.

Sup y'a;ll. I'm a mechanic, and every now and then we have a lot of free time at the shop. So recently, my manager got a laptop to play WoW and shit on when we're dead. i said to him "shit man maybe I should get a laptop" and he said go for it.

So, I decided to do that and now I'm looking at thinkpads because this shit needs to be durable.
My budget is 200-270
All I want to do is play runescape, and dwarf fortress. What i'm thinking right now is a t430s which i can find on ebay for 250, with a i5-3320M, 8 gb of ram, 1600x900 screen, some ssd and win 10

Thoughts? seem like a good idea/deal? Any suggestions to something superior?

I'm in the military, and work "DCO" operations.
This man speaks the truth.

NSA is probably better than us camo-wearing guys, but the government is crazy bad when it comes to keeping the right skilled guys in the right places. It is too easy for incompetence to thrive, since the goal is not to be efficient and save money, but to spend money on a bunch of random shit in hopes that some of it is effective.

Hey I got the same insomnia, and have a whole bunch of "tech of the quarter" awards.
Feels like being the least retarded at the special olympics.

It's really not hard to become a glow-in-the-dark, easiest way is to join the military for a "cyber" job, and then you'll make the right connections.

The whole point of the x-series is to be portable, durable, and have decent battery life while incorporating as many thinkpad features as possible.
If you want a heavier, hotter, full power machine, there are thinkpads for that too.

My X240 is an excellent travel companion. Just goes right into my backpack, and the extended battery is long enough to last for any flight or train ride.
