I really need a mature keyboard with a windows key. Is there any alternative to buying a Unicomp Ultra Classic if I want key switches similar to buckling spring? I don't mind trying out a different key switch style.

I want something silent, I've been looking at browns for a long time but I feel like they are loud still, maybe reds? with o rings? I feel like linear may be better for me, a red silent or something similar.
>Preferred layout
ANSI or whatever has more compatibility with keycaps
>Form factor
TKL or a combination of the numpad and arrows would be way better.
>Previous/current keyboards
I have an AULA TKL with kaihl blue switches and it started malfunctioning around a year after I got it, the switches are extremely annoying but I just got it to try mechanical keyboards for the first time.

I like the keyboard to have that floating look, easier to clean and it just looks better for me.

I'm thinking of buying the Glorious PC TKL with Gateron reds, but if there is another keyboard with the same floating style, rgb and a mix of the arrows and numpad I'd probably prefer it.

>> No.67207731

Are mx clears not as scratchy as they used to be? I heard how cherry retooled their switches to make them smoother, but I don't know if that extended to clears.

>> No.67207750

oh one issue too with it, i think it's a problem with my pc because windows update seems to have fixed it. when coming from sleep mode the keyboard sometimes wouldn't recognize with windows. i think it's just an issue with keyboards in general, but a simple unplug and plug back in did it just fine. has a nice cable canal, too. i bought some belkin microusb cables anyways for my dac, and it fits right in with the keyboard.
seriously though, you are going to love that. rainbow fagcaps aside, i kinda like the rainbow style because it's a super creative legends thing. it'll come with some extra blue caps and a cap with leaves that have all the colors on it as like a demo, which is super cool. oh and a super nice keycap puller.
the chassis gets a bit grimy, along with the caps, but it's easy to just rub it off with your finger. other than that it has a really good anchor, i don't feel it sliding around on my desk. the switches have been rock solid, no real problems other than i occasionally double tap space and the spacebar is slightly bent, but i managed to bend every spacebar i've ever owned, even on my model m.
yeah i went with clears because i wanted something super tactile but without the gay fucking click. mx blues and outemu blues hurt my ears and the model m just raped me so i had to flossmod it.
i owned an nmb rt101+ and that sounded blissful, but i decided fuck clicky, it doesn't add anything to my experience.
clears are a bit weird to get into. they don't feel great at first but after about a week it's just amazing. especially with pbt. i was at a fry's just window shopping and saw a msi keyboard with clears with some of the shittiest abs caps and mounting i've ever seen on a keyboard. it was obviously clears but the caps just shook all over the place. rattling like bones.
the ducky doesn't have bad rattling. it's there, but i mean you're not buying a model m or an nmb so rattling just kind of comes with keyboards.

>> No.67207761

i got clears specifically for their non-scratchy feel compared to browns. browns felt super scratchy, like typing on a file. mx clears i jokingly refer to as "cum switches" and not because of the translucent snot-colored switches, but rather that the keyfeel going down kind of feels like you're bursting through a layer of mucus. like it feels great after a week of getting used to it, but before that it'll feel like you bought a rubber dome board.

>> No.67207787

The thing is that because of the larger bump, a rough surface on the stem of the switch would be more prominent in feel. I guess newer MX clears have retooled stems then.

>> No.67207797

imagine the tactile bump of blues without the click. that's basically what i'd say it is.

>> No.67207811

I have clears myself, but they're old ones. I just can't be bothered to buy new clears to compare them when I'm not really interested in building a board with clears in it. I'm waiting for the fixed box switches to go up on novelkeys.

>> No.67207820

A Matias Tactile Pro (they sell a PC version) is probably your best bet. If you're used to buckling springs you'll find cherries disappointing, even the clicky ones, as the "click" is quite hollow and plasticky. Matias-produced Alps clones, on the other hand, are really quite satisfying. The Mac version is my daily driver.

On a tangent, fun fact: the clicker mechanism in blues wasn't originally meant to be a clicker at all, and was introduced in an older switch as a means of providing hysteresis, and the first switch to use it actually damped out the sound of that descending "jacket". Only later did they decide to repurpose it as a rather mediocre clicker.

Unicomp are still using the tooling from the final generation of IBM/Lexmark Model M, which was a product of many cost-saving iterations that compromised build quality and durability. Bless them, they're trying, but it's really just as disappointing as looking at a later Model M next to a 1st- or 2nd-gen.

>> No.67207874

i used to have a mqc board. the switches are really cheap feeling. wouldn't recommend them.
i'd get a rt101+ if you can. that's my close second to buckling spring, but the switches occasionally catch. they're a bit hard to find on ebay, but if you can get one it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

The QC switches are shit because:
a) tactile leaf instead of a clicky leaf opposite the contacts, which doesn't impart as much tactility because it's stuck in place, compare white alps to black alps
b) rubber dampers for additional quietness
They feel like slightly more refined rubber domes. It's for a very specific taste. The bona fide clicky switches are in a league of their own in comparison.
He specifically asked for Windows keys; An RT-101+ won't deliver on that. Although, speaking of real Alps, a nice clean AT101W would certainly do the trick.

It is so fucking stupid that mechanical keyboards are depicted cordless 80% of the time, while they are corded 99% of the time.

Even the non gaymer keyboards are always corded. What is the fucking reason, other than these products being for hipsters, for these things to still lack the wireless counterparts?

A ton of products are wired/wireless combo nowadays. I haven't been using a wired keyboard and mouse for at least 8 years now for fucks sake. I game, I used to play DotA, CS Source, you name it. I now play Dota 2 occasionally, and at no point I have used a corded peripheral for all those 8 years.

What is the excuse /g/? Why, just fucking why, if these type of keyboards are for fucking typing? Why the gaymer companies are leading with the wireless designs on them, if the wireless is being dissed for being lag and issue prone?

Hello /mkg/, how hard is it to mod the cable into being detachable on a fixed-cable keyboard? Would it be possible to take the header connector of the cable inside the board and replace the wires with pic related's? Or perhaps use a USB adapter together with the keyboard's cable to rig something up? Sorry if my question is stupid, I don't have a lot of experience with this.

>> No.67221487

both of them are cancer
blues have a garbage primitive click mechanism and a high pitched shitclick, and reds are so light i could type by just pissing on the keyboard.

>> No.67221490

just replace the switch, it's not that hard

>> No.67221502

it's not the hardest thing in the world if you have a soldering iron and maybe a dremel.
if you don't know how to solder, however, you may have other issues.
basically just order some headers on aliexpress, desolder the old connector, add the new one.

I have never owned a mechanical keyboard before. My current keyboard is fantastic, namely the 'G' keys to the left-side and the media control, both of which I appreciate and use a lot. By what I can tell, Cherry MX Reds and Blacks would be great for me, just unsure which. After some looking about, I have found one that looks good for what I am after: Corsair K95. Again, I am not thinking it's good because it's colourful, more that it can use Cherry MX Reds, and it has the 'G' keys to the left-side, numpad, and media control. Not sure if it helps, but I type an awful lot whether it's communication, writing (reports, data entry etc), and video games.

Any suggestions or what-not would be greatly appreciated. I'm still learning on what's what with mechanical keyboards and what-not.

They're fine. Most bitching is about how they're not like Model M tanks from 1987 but they're about the same as the Lexmark ones from 1994, mostly because it's the exact same factory and tooling. Get a small case one though, as that minimizes the cutbacks they made in material thickness. I had a 2007 one for a bunch of years, used it daily and it was fine. Sold it for $60 earlier this year just because I was trimming everything down in my collection. Heck, I need to sell some more stuff.
