Gateron or box linears are good, but like almost every other spring based switch Hooke's Law does make it gradually move difficult to press. First mechanical keyboard question.

Should I get Cherry MX reds or browns if I want something that's good for both gaming and typing? I initially wanted to get reds because they're linear, but some people say they're too sensitive and don't feel good for typing.

>> No.67142003

Surprisingly enough that's not horribly overpriced for what it is. IF you want low profile switches, then it's not a terrible purchase. The backlighting can be either a pro or a con, but since you're already considering it you probably don't mind it.
I genuinely don't know if there are other keyboard with low profile and bluetooth that are cheaper. Also good carry cases are like $10-20 easily so if you're gonna be carrying it around, and actually making use of the bluetooth and carry case, then I'd go for it.

On the other hand if you don't strictly need BOTH bluetooth and low profile, then there are probably better options. Anne Pro is the go to bluetooth keyboard for like $60 IIRC, and >>67141960 suggested a cheaper low profile.

A bit late hehe.
I was able to test the three versions that the keyboard came, which were blue, brown and red.
At first I was going for the red switches but I didn't notice anything special in them. In fact I would choose the rubberdomes before the red.
Then when I tested the blues, I immediately noticed a huge difference, especially the actuation spot. But the noise it made was quite uncomfortable to me, especially because I couldn't speak with the guy next to me. Hence, why I ended with the brown switches, where I couldn't notice the actuation point as much as the blues, but were much more silent.

I still can't decide between Cherry MX reds and browns for a combination of gaming and typing.

The most common advice on the internet seems to be "just try them yourself", but I have no stores around here where I can do that, and I don't know anyone with a mechanical keyboard either. A switch tester would cost me $30 with shipping from Amazon, and for that price I could buy some cheap Chinese board and call it a day.

Do I just buy one thing and return it back if I hate it? Would kinda suck as I'd have to ship it overseas but it seems that no amount of online reading can compare to first hand experience in this case.

So I was thinking about buying mechanical one.
I need it to have a case probably, because Im going to be carrying it a lot in my backpack to work and back.
What keyboard could /mkg/ recommend?

I am looking for a new keyboard but have not tried out the different types of Cherry switches.

Do you just buy a keyboard and hope the switch description is what you are looking for?

Yeah, you end up with a giant ass dongle sticking out of your keyboard.
Usually when you want bluetooth it's because you're carrying your keyboard around, and it's pretty much impossible to carry it around with THAT sticking out without something getting damaged. So you're trading "take out cable from bag, plug cable into small port on back of keyboard, plug cable into easily accessible port on laptop" for "take out dongle from bag, plug dongle into small port on back of keyboard", skipping perhaps the easiest step while getting all the same disadvantages (possibility of connection or latency issues, need to pair, battery life) as a proper bluetooth solution.

Unless I'm totally missing something, this is a piece of shit.

Keyboard advice,

I am using 15$ chicklet keyboard atm, but I decided to give a try for a mechanical one.

After reading few guides that what I need:

-60-70% req. keys for vim like insert/del
-as silent as possible (brown switches?)
-non-linear (I am looking for a keyboard only for typing/programming)

Now I live in a very old apartment and I am usually wriiting whole night so loud keyboard would be quite bad.

So I am going to spend max 50$ on first keyboard just to test if I will find it comfortable and not too loud.

What is your opinion on Velocifire, it has outemu brown, is it any good for under 30$?

>> No.67159111

>-as silent as possible (brown switches?)
>-non-linear (I am looking for a keyboard only for typing/programming)
You read some bad guides, browns are just as loud as any other undampened MX switch and there's nothing wrong with linears for typing, the whole "blues = typing, reds = gaming" shite is just marketing trash.

If you want real quiet, you'll need to pay up for a Leopold, Varmilo or Ducky with dampened switches, which only come in linear currently.

The Velocifire is a decent board, but don't expect quiet or great switches.

Why is the mechanical keyboard market so fucking awful?

I've spent the last few days researching brands, switches and whatnot and this market is ridiculously polarized from a newcomer's perspective.

The highly regraded brands (Ducky, Filco, Leopold etc.) start from $100 and up, then you have the overpriced meme tier "gaming brands" like Corsair starting slightly below that. Then at the bottom of the food chain you have cheap China crap like Magicforce and Redragon that are for some reason heralded for having superior build and material than the big brands, but have shitty switches and caps so they're only good if you want a fucking DIY project. People on the internet kept throwing around the CM Masterkeys PBT as good entry boards but turns out these have QC problems as well and don't have double shot caps so that's more $$$ after a while to get new caps.

That's without factoring in the problem of finding the right switch for you, especially if you don't live in Murrica where you can just walk into Best Buy and slam on their keyboards.

Better to just buy a new rubber dome and call it a day.

>> No.67159467

Not on its own it can't. If you look at the pictures on the page, it doesn't have its own power source, so you need to either plug it into a massive USB power brick, or into a computer.

Because taking a keyboard, sticking its long ass usb cable into that dongle, then plugging the dongle into a power brick is definitely a neat and usable wireless solution.

You can game on anything, though jades are perhaps the worst switch for that because the weak spring combined with the thick clickbar makes the return very slightly delayed. tAround three years ago I got my first mechanical keyboard. I wasn't really believing the hype so I bought a Kaihua with blue switches for $40 and I ended up really loving it.

Fast forward to today, the board could be in a better state: tab and ctrl don't respond randomly (they work around 50% of the time) and both stabilizers on my spacebar cracked, so I'm shopping for a new one.

I don't need anything fancy, just something that can last me for years. The kaihua was great but the chinese build quality finally caught up to it

I would like to spend $100~$120 at max, though cheaper options are also good

What local currency? Brazil is full of IT shops that will sell mainstream mechanical keyboards and some re-sellers.

>> No.67186303

I'm actually in Brazil, yeah
I'm just not sure if it's worth to get something here, the basic Gigabyte is around $40 at Amazon but around R$320 at Kabum (82 USD), though this is just one example and I haven't done much research yet

>> No.67186639

Even with the price difference you're beter off buying locally because your product might be taxed and you have to pay international shipping fees.

It is a bit hard find mechanical keyboards due to them being lumped with Razer trash and semi-mechanical keyboards.

Literally fucking bought a keyboard on KBDFans and qmk does not have it in their database. It is not a normal format either. I changed the layout in the keyboardeditor site, but now apparently wiring is super important. I don't fucking know the wiring.

Like what is this shit.

and this

which one did you buy?

kbd661 with a split backspace and full shift

https://config.qmk.fm/#/kbd66/LAYOUT_all try this

>> No.67186958

It really depends on the price, cause I can probably get shipping for $20 with someone that will label it as something that won't get me taxed, for example.

>> No.67186966

also the kbd660 on http://qmkeyboard.cn/ probably works as well
worst case contact the guy and ask him about it

thanks might try it when I get home, but it is pretty nonstandard.

This is the layout.

Well, Kabum is having a sale right now. Cheapest keyboards are Using Outemu Blue/Brown but they have a few Cherry Mx. I would check there before buying abroad, but if you have someone that can label the kb as a gift then it might be worth it.

>> No.67187094

where to buy silent keyboard?

>> No.67187097

>Redragon Kumara Switch Outemu Blue
This one is incredibly cheap there but would it even last more than 3 years? That was my issue with the Kaihua, I would like something that I wouldn't need to replace too soon

>> No.67187133

I'm actually having the same question. I'd like to know more about Redragon and the Outemu Switches.
