Does anyone here like sampling chink cherry clone switches when they have a chance? Sometimes, I want to see just how much they've caught up and how low you can go for a decent mech. I've only sampled blue switches though, but from my experience:
Gateron>Cherry>=Outemu>>>Kailh/Razer>=everything else. It's pretty amazing how far we've come in terms of choice and value since those Cherry patents expired. If only the same could happen to DRAM.

cherries are globally the most recognized so that is what i want, plus they have the biggest collection of caps

>> No.65769267

All Cherry clones are compatible with them, and all newer switches are Cherry compatible even if they aren't mechanically similar.

>> No.65769271

They switches or the keyboard? Because I plan to harvest switches to put into maybe an ergodox or something.

>> No.65769286

Anybody who is into mechanical keyboards will have heard of at least Alps, Gateron and Kailh. The difference with cherry is it's known outside the hobbyist community.

Fuck, Alps for instance are about as old and well respected as cherry (though they aren't compatible with cherry keycaps)

>> No.65769315

Go for a Gateron switch, superior to Cherry across the board and cheaper too, it feels much smoother. If those aren't readily available that's when you go Cherry. It's always best to try them out in an actual store since the implementation of each switch can vary from keyboard to keyboard.

I'm building a custom MX board to go with my topres and selling my prebuilt MX boards.
I'm torn between two switch options.I like to be able to use each of my boards for everything. I'm concerned that click bar will be so tactile that its not enjoyable to spam keys in games. On the other hand I'm worried about linears having no tactility at all resulting in me not using them.
1) Click bar(with SA caps, produces very nice sound)
2) MX Silent with 62g springs and housing swap as well as lube
Which should I go with?

>> No.65769441

I meant the keyboards, but if you plan on harevesting them I don't think they're compatible with ALPS PCBs so you're gonna have to custom build one

>> No.65769457

funny thing is that chink switches are more recognized then cherry, but if you fell for the memes I don't blame ya

>> No.65769517

I hate to tell you this but aliexpress is probably where you'll find the best deal for a decent mech. If budget is not an issue, and you can't wait, Cherrys from a big brand are a safe choice, just not anything particularly special. If you can wait though, Gaterons are the best Cherry clones, and the general opinion is that they can be even smoother than Cherrys. Other Cherry clones worth mentioning are Outemus and Kailhs. I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to the best brands and particular keyboards though, so someone else here might be able to help you out there.
For Cherrys and their clones, the three most common switches are red, blue and brown. Red is linear (no bump as you press it down) and requires a lighter press, for this reason, gamers like it since it's easier to spam key combinations with it.
Blues are the loud, clicky switches with a tactile bump as you press them down. More force is required to press them down but the tactile feedback and distinct sound mean that people who type a lot often prefer it.
Browns are an in between, without the clickiness but with a bit of tactile feedback still, but the general consensus is that Cherry MX Browns just feel like a "dirty" red, like a red that got dirt stuck in it. If you think a brown might suit you considering you're both coding and gaming, this is where you should go Gateron. Honestly though, I've been able to type and game on all three of these types of switches and their clones no problem. It's all going to feel better than a membrane anyway.

Less than 100€

>> No.65771939

He's not wrong on the first part - key press travel alone easily accounts for 5-15ms. Most controllers are also not optimised for latency, and will only scan the matrix a few times per second - even at 200Hz, that's up to 5ms delay between scans. Now we're up in the ballpark of 10-20ms and that's not even considering any inefficiencies in actually processing the signal into a data packet to send over USB, or the 5-10ms delay for debouncing (which most keyboards apply before sending the keypress for some reason, based on what I've read).

For reference, qmk documentation states the scanning should run "at least 10 times per second" - meaning, worst case, you can have 100ms between scans and STILL be functioning completely normally and up to spec - while I read somewhere (but forgot the source) that some old keyboards (back when cost efficiency wasn't a priority) would scan at like 50kHz.

On the other hand, reducing travel time to a couple milliseconds, using optical non-bouncing switches and a good controller will still not get you anywhere near 0.2ms, so he's blatantly wrong there.

>> No.65772269

Well you could use a light based switch, but other than that, electricity vs light would not make a noticeable difference. The reason that debouncing is nessecary is because electricity will arc between the switch plates or whatever when they are close enough, but it won't be constant and it will occur at a very high frequency. Once it is held down long enough and far enough, you should just get a normal flow of electricity.

I think his opinion is good and he made a comprehensive list.
Also I don't see you making any lists. >>65788135
That is really cool. Please share.

Example here,

Nearly all Packard Bell Keyboards that are model 51XX are btc keyboards.

I'm deadset on getting a particular set of keycaps + switches but honestly don't want to shell out for the rest.

Am I an idiot or a genius if I put top-shelf switches/keycaps on a salvaged PCB and lasercut the plate/case from wood veneer to save money?

Are these PC-98 keyboards even mechanical?

If time is not worth money to you, yeah.

You know you can just get a gmmk, which is a hotswap keyboard, and switch out switches as you please for the rest of your life without a headache.

Is that particular one? I know the 8800 models have either Futaba switches or blue alps, but there isn't much info for the later boards.

>> No.65788577

you gotta take a gamble. Deskthority does not have all the information on the pc-98. I have one I bought that looked like some smk alps and it turned out it was some weird mitsumi smk clone which was not even documentated.

>The rounded new body is a monochromatic light gray with a gray cable. The key switch was changed to a membrane switch, and the character of key top which was formerly two-color molding was changed to printing. Kana / CAPS lock display moves to the upper left, cover of vf key is gone. In addition, NEC logo printed on the body is switched to the new logo

This must be why these versions are all so cheap. They don't even have good caps.

Thanks for the info, anon. That helps widen my search. I think my chances of finding one locally are pretty low though, so the international shipping problem remains. For example, that one you posted doesn't ship to my country at all, and there's another one up but shipping is 3x the cost of the keyboard.

I might have to just wait and hope one shows up locally.

> I also think that the alps still don't hold a candle to capacitive buckling springs and beamsprings.
Hence the latter two are god tier (where god is dead). It all works out in my opinion.

You should go put it on the /g/ wiki, the mechanical keyboard section is pretty sad looking right now. Unless you were going to make something ultra fancy for some reason.

Also it's sad that shooping is such an ancient art to so many anon nowadays.

I want that keyboard but matrix-layout & split.

Fermented, organic soi is actually healthy. Phytoestrogens are impossible to avoid unless you want to stop eating vegetables altogether and animal milk raises its own concerns that may outweigh soi's own.

>> No.65789924

I like the basedboy meme as much as the next dude but 'phytoestrogens' is a meme, no consensus the body actually absorbs and uses them. It's especially stupid since most of our plastics and pesticides are estrogen-mimicking compounds which are probably far more damaging to our endocrine systems.

>> No.65789999

I agree with that. Also, stores will sell you plenty of outright toxic foods with the blessing of everyone involved included yourself.

>for this reason, gamers like it since it's easier to spam key combinations with it
I have no idea where veryone got this meme from, I'm trying to play some arcade games with a linear keyboard and it's fucking impossible to know whether you've actually pressed the key or not. Spamming with a linear pretty much forces you to bottom out ifyou want to be sure you're not missing a keystroke. Fpr the love of god, if you're a manchild that plays games, don't ever get a linear switch.

Yep, it's a sad state of affairs. Everyone boycotts BPA because it fucks with our hormones, but its simply replaced with others just as bad.

I don't know, blue maybe? I'll be using most for typing (programming, reports and stuff) and casual single-player FPS gaming.
ABNT2, that's why I don't care about custom keycaps, there will be none for this layout anyway.

100%, I do use my numpad.
Don't care.

Only had rubber domes until now.

The problem is there are only so many manufacturers using that layout for their keyboards, and of them the only noteworthy are Corsair, Cooler Master, Cougar and Sharkoon. So yeah, maybe I'm fucked.

>> No.65790931

Cooler master keyboards are actually pretty descent. I'd get one of those if you can't find anything else. Otherwise try get some cheap chinese one from aliexpress or banggood. Magicforce and James Donkey are pretty good
