Old thread: >>64984698

If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

>>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Libreboot models:
>>T60, X60; X200, T400/500
Modern models:
>>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>>T420/T430 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, Ivy Bridge installable w/ Coreboot on T420; Old keyboard swap on *30 series
>>T/W52/30 - 15", 1080p, DTR, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3
>>T440p/540p; W540/1 - Last Thinkpads with socketed processors, easily replaceable trackpad (W541 doesn't need trackpad replacement)
>>P-Series - 15'' + 17'', 4K display, 64gb of RAM, Xeon CPU option. Expensive. Bad stock cooling reported by multiple owners.

Why ThinkPad?
>>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet
>>Great durability: magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>>The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Also, whichever anon said the SL series was hard to work on is a liar. This is the easiest thinkpad I've ever had to take apart for cleaning. The CPU and chipset heatsinks and fan are just under one of the panels and theyre really easy to remove.

What's up ni/g/nogs
I have a Thinkpad Yoga something or other. I didn't care much for the Thinkpad brand, but I seriously love the trackpoint. Mine actually has some drift issue sometimes when scrolling down, but in general I prefer it to the trackpad when typing. I wanted to get into using GNU plus Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Linux, but some piece of hardware isn't compatible with Ubuntu. So what's the most modern Thinkpad with reliable Linux support that I can buy used? Realistically my budget is maybe $200-300 or so, but I wouldn't be buying within the next 2 months or so, so I'm really open to hearing about any of them.
Also, is the xx20 series's keyboards actually hot shit? I'm typing on the newer "island-style" keyboard right now, and I think that it's fine. Could be better, I guess. At least it isn't one of the newer Mac keyboards.

>> No.65018194

There was a big backlash from the thinkpad community over the decisions for the xx40 series. They even thought integrating the touchpad buttons into the trackpad itself was a good idea. I think it was also the first model to solder the ram in. They sheepishly changed back to an older design in their next generation but they really thought this direction was good. Looking for a small portable laptop that I can use for uni work. Basically coding (python/c++/matlab) and usual word processing. Unsure of what OS I'm putting on it yet.
I've got a £200 grant I can put toward it, able to foot the difference though if there's something much better for a small increase.
Looking at the OP I'm thinking a x220 or x230. I've used shite keyboards for most my life, so the x230 keyboard isn't a huge turnoff.
I'm busy at the moment, so I want something that works as much as possible out of the box, but it would be nice if I can tinker with it further down the line. Have I got the right idea or am I barking up the wrong tree?

for anyone having issues with their x220/t420 keyboard flexing, i have a fix for you.
take out the keyboard and bend it inwards longitudinally. (hotdog style)
dont do it too strongly because the keyboard is fairly malleable.

>> No.65024301

The issue I have with my T430 classic keyboard swap is that the left hand side seems a bit loose and there is a very small gap between the bottom of the keyboard and the chassis. You can feel when typing that the keyboard "bottoms out" by hitting the chassis.

Haven't figured out a fix yet. Tried to increase the thickness by electrical tape but can't seem to get the right amount of layers (either too thick or too thin).

I'd say put around 500 and let people make offer?

The Lenovo boot firmware on the X230 consists of a traditional "legacy" type BIOS that gets loaded first to bring up some low level hardware and drivers, then the EFI (which is built to the UEFI standards) is loaded on top. UEFI is just a specification for EFIs, and you can have a standalone EFI like on phones or Apple Macs, but there's no backwards compatibility. Apple Macs are an exception in that the standalone EFI has built in BIOS emulation that can run on top of the EFI to boot MBR disks for dual booting with Windows.

Now on my X230, I stripped out all of the stock Lenovo BIOS/EFI and replaced it with Coreboot (which runs first). Coreboot is very basic boot firmware that just brings up hardware and some drivers, then executes a payload. The payload can be anything you want, from a traditional type BIOS (SeaBIOS) to a bootloader (GRUB) or even an EFI implementation (Tiano Core). I like SeaBIOS because it just searches for a disk and boots it. GRUB is a possibility (Libreboot uses it as a payload) but I like to keep the bootloaders on the disks themselves and not on the boot ROM. Tiano Core provides some cool EFI features like GPT and large boot disk support, an interactive shell, and other things, though I'm not sure if it's built to UEFI specifications or not. All of these payloads will also boot Windows 7 without issue.

Fuck it, just ordered an X300. The old keyboards get the job done but I wish they had put page up and page down by the cursor keys from the beginning. And CTRL should be at the very corner, not Fn, but oh well. On those notes, two things:

First, why does everyone praise the old keyboards so much? They feel like basically any old laptop keyboard to me whereas the new chiclet ones are the most satisfying keyboards I've typed on, even if there's a small hit to efficiency. The tactile feedback is invigorating and makes me want to type just to type; it's definitely worse for word processing, but I think I actually write code a little faster on it.

Second, I'm not the only one compulsively hoarding thinkpads, am I? I see a good price or stellar condition on a model I don't have, and I just can't stop myself. I always rationalize it that I'll do something with all of them some day, but around half have never seen any real use.

Ah, that's a shame.

Maybe if you have the spare time, try to contact a seller with high reputation who mainly sells Thinkpad stuff and ask if they have that specific part.

Just discovered there is another thinkpad series, which like the x1 carbon, doesn't inform you exactly which model you have or are bidding on. Sellers they don't themselves know, so you have to always research painstakingly either from pictures or whatever. So it could be a 1gen, or 3gen. Why was this deemed a good idea. What the fuck is wrong with naming the first x1 carbon this and the second gen, x2 carbon. The helix is another one of these shitshows. It's not a fucking honda civic where you can see from a glance if its a first gen or 7th gen.

>Is the process to coreboot the x230 the same as for the x220 in that you need a hardware programmer?
Yes, you an SPI programmer. Use a RasPi and clip.

>I tried to do it on the x220 but gave up because I couldn't ever successfully attach the clip.
Read the Coreboot guide in the link below. There are sometimes people on ebay that run a Libreboot install service. You just remove your hard disks and send them the machine in the mail and pay like $50. I did this with a T400 a few years ago before I had the tools and experience to flash it myself. They even repasted the CPU for me. You could ask some of those sellers if they'll install Coreboot and strip the IME firmware for you.

Don't listen to the retards here. The newer ThinkPad keyboards are fine and those naysayers are brainlets that can't into Coreboot or modifying the stock BIOS. You don't even need this anyways, since on the X230 at least you get a free slot where you can put an extra wireless card or mSATA disk and there's no whitelist on that.

The old Core2 ThinkPads work fine still. Be sure to put new high capacity cells in the battery so you can get days of battery life. I did this with 3200mAh cells for vapes in my T400. Works great.

Cheap, plentiful, easy as pie to service, and compatible with nearly an x86 OS, even Mac OS X on many models. Lenovo also offers stock BIOS updates for years, and service manual PDFs for free with all the part numbers, and these machines often get Coreboot ported to them after that. You can run any Linux distro you want on these things, or even Windows or BSD or other stuff. They also have pretty decent cooling and battery life on the newer models. They also have a trackpoint, which is pretty nice once you get used to it.

I shill here for free because ThinkPads are great.

Read the reviews. If in doubt, buy OEM parts.
