I'll evaluate this guy's reviews. Hopefully he's different, but the problem with most bassheads is that they have absolutely no sense of what good midrange or treble is - and I consider both mids and treble to be far more important than bass. If a headphone is bass-light, or bass-heavy, that's what I hear it as and I'm absolutely fine with it. If a headphone is uneven in the mids or treble - it sounds muffled or ear rape or shouty, etc, and if I'm to listen to it at all, that requires throwing tons of EQ into the mix.

lol. he was the one who found the sz2000. also popularized the ma900. he says just find a low distortion driver with a high xmax and just EQ the midrange/treble. if it can't slam it's a shit driver.
>if I'm to listen to it at all, that requires throwing tons of EQ into the mix.
the problem is that you can't have all three (slam, vocal clarity, treble detail) because you have to sacrifice one of them. not with the kannon though. although part of that is dependent on how good the OEM driver it uses though

>> No.64733656

What do you think, do you know anything about really old headphones?
I bought these old japanese ones for 6$, they are huge as hell, at 8 ohms your ears can't help but feel raped and they squeeze your head really hard, gave me a huge nasty blister on the inside of my mouth.
They sound pretty nice when you switch the output to 4 or 5.1 channels though, sound is very "dark" but seems to originate from different places in the room very well and it really exposes dynamic range compression in recordings, even at quiet volumes it often starts almost hurting your ears at times.

I don't know, I can't relate if that's your only criteria for a headphone. I listen to literally every genre (except rap, because hiphop) and enjoy every type of headphone signature from extreme basshead to extreme clarity.

that's a strong opinion I don't think you should hold because I don't believe you have enough reference points to genuinely be able to say that. look at the takstar decay measurements that was posted here the other day for example

I mean you're not wrong for thinking that. I just don't think you are right casting an umbrella statement like that. What I think you mean is that it costs more to get a closed back headphone that meets your baseline requirements than it does an open back.

>> No.64734152

Look at japanese forums and social stuff. STAX had a booth at some audio convention where you could listen to the L300Ltd. The guy on Head-Case is only one of many japanese people who were there.
Feedback is that it sounds good, and would be closer to the L700, but it's not AS GOOD as it is. It's a fine entry to the electrostatics if you wanted to put this kind of price, but people already find the difference between the L300 and L700 not always worth the cost, which I think so too.
In the case of the anon with the SR-507, I really feel like this would be a waste of money.
In case you ever had a doubt, the amp has nothing special, just a black version of the 353.

>Feedback is that it sounds good, and would be closer to the L700, but it's not AS GOOD as it is.
no I'm just confused as the way it is being phrased. it sounds like narrative spinning by L700 owners trying to downplay something cheaper but close in sound fidelity. this happens all the time in audio with new products
>Definitely not as good
the intonation here being "definitely not close to the L700".
it doesn't matter because limited editions and collectors items hold their value far better and can be sold off for the same price or better. if you wanted an actual L700 you could just sell it and buy one with no loss.

because it is potentially as good (or better) than the L700. I don't trust random rumors. I'll wait for spritzer who bought two of them. even if it's the midway point in fidelity/tonality between the L300 and L700 then it's still a good price. I wouldn't be surprised to see them for $1k+ on the used marketed after awhile. I'm not keen on the used stax market prices though.

>> No.64734739

I was on the toilet, sorry for the misleading phrasing. The sound signature is closer to the L700 than from other STAX earspeakers, however it's not just "L700 in L300 enclosure", they apparently sound quite different. My japanese is not so good so I can't find specific points about the details, I'll try to look around more.
No downplay here, just trying to give you the overall feedback I can understand since it seems you guys are getting into STAX now.
>because it is potentially as good (or better) than the L700
It's not better though, that seems like the general response at least.
I doubt they'll be worth much on the used market. Maybe you can sell them for retail price, but that's inplying the usual electrostatics celebrities shill it like no others. Different limited editions of STAX didn't hit surprising prices.

okay. I don't trust auditions either because even just having the headphones placed differently on your head slightly can dramatically change the sound and leave different impressions.
>It's not better though, that seems like the general response at least.
apparently a good amount of people prefer the L300 over the L700 anyways, so "better" is a bit of a misleading term. and I lead with "as good", I don't actually think it will be better. that would seem like a bit of a stretch.

also one problem I noticed with open backs is that you are just pointing a speaker in the exact direction you don't want it to go. you are basically pointing a little tiny speaker directly at the door if it's in the path. in that case it's probably better to just use near field speakers, I think in most cases an undampened open headphone is quieter though.

If you're always sitting in the sweetspot to watch TV then I'd recommend 8" studio monitor + sub, unless it's from 15ft+ back. Maybe the LSR 308 Mackie XR 824? Depends on the size of the room too.

For casual lifestyle party mode speakers in a large living room environment, the floorstand would probably win out.. but if it's in a closed medium sized room or smaller I think the 8 inch studio monitors + sub would be loud enough, while being way more accurate for that price.

The MSR7 has so much more clarity it's a no-fucking-brainer. The only reason not to buy it and picking a cheaper AT closed is if you don't have the money, period.
Bass on M50X is muddy, treble too uneven to sound with decent clarity. It also has the typical closed headphone soundstage, the MSR7, while not sounding open, sounds wider enough to be noticeable and appreciated.

>> No.64739307

This guy did measurements of the m40x with various pads. They all arguably degrade the sound, but you could probably pick which one degrades it the least to your ears.

I've been looking for a headphone to compliment my hd580. I did a bunchof research and settled on the beyerdynamic t90. Its more technically competent than the dt1990 and the upper midrange looks appealing in graphs. I can tolerate some brightness.
What do you think of the t90 /hpg/?

It looks like it has the same sort of structural design as the Fostex headphones. The sort that can't sustain a single fall. Do you really want to use that as your portable headphones?

Lol no. Although the bass is a bit muddy, the m50x have bass, extension and everything.
The sony roll off like an open headphone, the driver is showing its age. It was good for its time but it's also time to stop recommending vintage garbage when there are better products on the market now.

On the front port it connects only if it is being pushed to one of the sides. On the back port it doesn't connect at all.

A lot of people also buy multi hundred dollar cables, with a minority of these nuts buying multi grand cables. Probably even more than the amount of people buying ZMF headphones. Your appeal to 'people like this therefore it's good' is devoid of actual argumentation.

>> No.64742472

>Your appeal to 'people like this therefore it's good' is devoid of actual argumentation.
lmao no it's called the market price. the price is determined by what people are willing to spend. no one gives a rats ass if you think something is overpriced or a steal. almost all dynamic drivers cost $20 to manufactor as well. don't try to flip the conversation around. you are the one who is making criticisms that are devoid of argumentation.

Who cares what the market values? this is /hpg/, not /fund investments/, we talk about what is objectively good or bad, not about stuff some lunatics think is worth money. ZMF is a tiny player if anything among the companies that exploit crass ignorance. There's a company that sells a $10 000 ethernet cable. Now that's some maximum profit.

no they aren't. go build your own headphone out of wood, source some drivers for it, yokes, headbands. now do this in bulk while also managing sales and business. nevermind that you have to make it sound good enough to justify the cost of putting together which requires a ton of time investment. tell me, how much would you charge for that headphone? I'd love to see you undercut mr. speakers or zmf with a better sounding headphone. seems like everyone thinks they can, all talk though really. then you have people like >>64742506
who straight up lie about having head a headphone that they haven't to make an argument.

Because I obviously take selfies everytime I go and check up headphones at shops and audio shows. Get real. I'm just giving you my impressions about the headphones when I tried a pair since you told me I should.

What does that have to do with anything? First of all, it's a tiny boutique company that has a tiny customer base and had no previous ties or experience in managing a large supply chain or anything. Of course they are going to have much bigger operating costs compared to companies like Fostex, to keep it fair comparing wood-to-wood since somehow you think it's a real selling point. Of course they will have to charge more even on their simplest, basest product to make a living. I don't expect them to make a product like the TH-X00.

But none of that answers the -why- should such companies even exist to begin with. Do they provide something of actual objective value over established companies that can mass produce quality headphones? Not really. If anything Fostex at least made a very, very unique dynamic driver that has very low bass distortion compared to the rest of the market.

Companies like ZMF are more like fashion companies than the place where audio innovation will come from.

>> No.64742695

>I'm just giving you my impressions about the headphones when I tried a pair since you told me I should.
maybe if I told you try a pair you'd come back and be like "oh I tried an auteur!". nah. you bring it up for the first time in an argument after I use the auteur as an example. you read the measurements and then tell me how you think they sound without having actually heard them.

and then you cry and whine and try to make me look like I'm the bad guy. fuck off and kys.
>Do they provide something of actual objective value over established companies that can mass produce quality headphones? Not really.
sure they do. saying they aren't would be disingenuous. a lot of people found their endgame with zmf

no, because this has been going on for awhile where people say they've heard a zmf but straight up lie. then proceed to tell me how my own headphones sound, or critiquing the teak vs the atticus when they've heard neither and I've owned both. and then I get called deaf when I disagree despite the measurements not on their side and I can verify it by having the headphones in my hand. you can say how you find it funny but really it's not. you should be laughing at how pathetic the other side is
