I personally could never sit in a desk like that at the corner. I think having the 2 monitors on the left side, and a tv on the right for console gaming is objectively better. The christmas lights made me lol though

the tank was 60-70€ at a home depot, I already had the sump which was like 60€. The light should be around 30€. I inherited the stand and most of the plants are from my old tank as well. Kinda hard to say.

The maintenance is rather simply if you keep the bio-load low. Partials water changes twice a month and you can clean the sump like once a year.

Nice and minimal, I like it lot, I'd just have a different colored wall.
Too urban and depressing for my case, it looks really nice, it's just not that "comfy" imo.
I didn't know Kylo Ren had a desk.
Vintage, very nice.

A couple questions anon

1: What are the specs of your current PC? Surely they must be a bit old to be able to run Windows XP.

2: What is the purpose of everything in your setup(other than the monitor, keyboard and mouse)?

>> No.63901765

obviously radio stuff

>> No.63901805

Not him, but I feel qualified to answer. This is a (very expensive) radio set up.

It is very likely that XP is dedicated to controlling the radios and logging radio contacts and nothing else.

I'm running a 7 year old Thinkpad with Windows 7Pro to control my IC-7300, FT-991A and smaller 2 Meter/70 CM radios and I can assure you, there's no reason to upgrade the OS when it handles the controllers, PATCOR and CW decoders. We Hams tend to spend the money on new antennas and radios instead of computers that run everything just fine.

quick question since this seems like the most relevant thread to ask. I bought a decent pair of speakers (polk monitor 40 series ii), and love them. I'm thinking about adding a REALLY small subwoofer to the set to take a little strain off to speakers' low, add some richness. I say REALLY small because I mainly want to be able to add volume without overworking the speaker low end, I don't really need to be bumping trap music for the surrounding states to hear.

Is there something affordable that fits the description, or should I just find a decent 10" and use it conservatively?

Are you American? Go to ARRL.org and look in resources. You need to study for an exam and I'd take the practice exams at 9pw.com/radio/ if I were you. You need to score 28 correct out of 35 to pass.

Pass your Technician and take your General right after (it's $15 to take your exam and as long as you pass Tech, you can take General for free right after).

General gives you permission to talk on the Global frequencies and power settings. Technician is the "starter pack" and really only gives you access to regional frequencies.

Then you need radios... This is the expensive part. You can buy a UHF/VHF hand held radio for around $30 (Baofeng UV-5R V2+, but get a Nagoya 771 antenna [$17] and a programming cable [$10] for it). This will get you on the air and talking to Repeater stations (this take your 5 watt signal and rebroadcast them at higher watts) which will let you talk in a 30-100 mile radius depending on the repeater.

To get on the HF (High Frequency) bands, you will need a very expensive radio. Alinco makes an HF Radio that runs around $600, but I suggest a "Big Three" radio (ICOM, Yaesu or Kenwood) which will cost at least $800 new (the Kenwood TS-590SG is a "Porsche" at about $1,300 or the Yaesu FT-991A for around the same price).

Great, you have a radio! Now, you need an antenna. To be able to work 80 meters through 10 meters (these are radio frequency wavelengths, we'll just ignore 160 meters) you're going to need a CHA-EMCOMM or trapped Dipole antenna. That's another $200 to 400 bucks. If you don't buy a radio with a built in antenna tuner, you'll need one of those, too. Add $200 more for a decent MJF brand antenna tuner. Maybe another $100 for your LMR-400 coax (50 Ohm) and a Balun (converts the 300 Ohm antenna to 50 Ohms for the radio).

Now you need a power supply. 30 Amps or so, add $200 more.

Everything needs to be carefully grounded. ABout $50 for a ground rod and wires.

Add another $100-150 for miscellaneous.

>> No.63916867
File: 550 KB, 1020x700, ts-590sg_f.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

Antennas are tricky. An Emcomm-style needs to be at least 66 feet and run a buried "counterpoise" to effectively radiate. Vertical antennas (like a CB Radio stick you see on trucks) aren't great for HF frequencies but you can use them if you have limited space. They're still going to be 30 feet tall.

Magnetic loop antennas work great and can fit in an attic but are expensive.

100 watts (the customary output of a radio) is usually good enough to talk with; I hit Siberia from Michigan with 100 Watts IF you have a good antenna.

An Amp (up to 1500 Watts for full legal output) will run you about $2000. I do not have one.

Correct. What you are looking to do is called DXing.

You can buy a Software Defined Radio, string up a long wire antenna (or an Active Pa0rdt with excellent grounding; my recommendation) and listen to broadcasts from all over the world on your computer.

It will cost you between $90 (Nooelect with Ham It Up Upverter for HF frequencies) to $1000. I'd recommend the SDRPlay rsp2 ($169).

Good stuff, thanks for posting. Not the anon you were originally responding to, but I've always had a low key interest. It's mostly obscured by my chair in this shot, but I've got an old Radio Shack two-meter radio + scanner + CB set up on my desk. All 12v models intended for being used in a vehicle, but I'm running a little 12v power supply for them, with an antenna up on the roof. I didn't realize when I bought it that magnetic auto antennas need the metal roof as a ground-plane, so I need to re-mount it. I've also got a little handheld Baofeng, so when I'm running all the gear I can monitor quite a few local frequencies simultaneously.

No license currently, so I only listen in.

Good info. Thank you very much.

I'll definitely shoot for the general class. What got me into it originally was reading about packet radio. I have some very remote land up in the mountains that I'm going to be building a cabin on, no power / internet / etc available.

Eventually I'd love to get some sort of system set up that can monitor the solar power, water, etc status of the cabin and squirt me out a little data burst with a daily status report, bounce it through a repeater and be received by my home station.

Mostly unnecessary, but it would be a neat project and offer a little piece of mind.

>> No.63921872

You're welcome.

I'm a little rusty on automatic stations but that should be legal if you connect to it to ask it to send the data (a DTMF code would be fine) and it broadcasts your callsign (morse or voice) at the beginning and end of the transmission.

Anyone can use them in a true emergency and you don't need to be licensed.

You can use the repeaters for fun if you are licensed, which is why its worth doing.
