If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™

Check https://www.libreboot.org for details.

I've had my x220 since 2011. I've had to replace the fan after a few years and also the power supply. Both were cheap. A few days ago the drive died but I backed everything up in time so no harm no foul. I'm pretty rough with it. I often carry it in my bike bag

Just switched over to Win10 LTSB + SBAB. After messing around with arch and ubuntu I was tired of the trackpad not working after waking from sleep, firefox tearing (I tried everything) poor trackpad acceleration curves, and there being no good DEs. (Don't argue, I tried them all, and I've done i3 stuff before)

Freedom was nice but it's still not there for anyone who wants a stable system UI on modern hardware. Lots of good terminal software if that's your thing but I don't get any joy from ricing like I used to.

The trackpoint's polling is too low for my preference and I'm not an aggressive typist that needs to keep hands on home row.

Hope you enjoyed my blogpost :^)

At that price range, you should look at the w530 with a 1080p screen. That will likely be right at your budget, maybe a bit over. Alternatively, you can get a w520 with a 1080p screen fairly comfortably in that price range. On the other end of the scale, you can get a t520 with a broken screen for $80, and install the w520 1080p screen in it ($50). It's a straight swap: 8 Philips head screws and some plastic clips.

Answer honestly

>> No.63379043

Sort of. Latitudes and Elitebooks offer the same value proposition, often at a slightly lower price. All three are off-lease business-class computers. They're cheap, sturdy, and easy to work on. A t420 will be able to handle most things you throw at it for the foreseeable future.

That, I don't know. The only reason I buy ThinkPads is because I'm familiar with them. The price difference is only 20 dollars or so and can easily be overcome by waiting around for a deal. ThinkPads have alot of documentation online as well. I'm not sure about support for Latitudes or Elitebooks.

With the T400 it's mainly the portability I'm concerned about -- how much heavier/'bulkier are they? Or are they better machines on the whole?

I have heard that the T400's CPU can be upgraded, which is a bonus.

Feel free to hit me with the shortcut regardless.

>> No.63381535

The t400 and t500 are both monsters. You can upgrade both of them to a t9900 processor. It doesn't make them much faster though. The x200 is the best option out of the three. Buy one with a broken screen and swap in a x201 screen. If memory serves me well, the x201 is a 1600x900.

Instead of disassembling the entire laptop, you can take a dremel to the roll cage and cut out a 1.5 inch section right above the chip you need to program. I'm not at home so I don't have pictures to show you where to cut, but it's super easy. Just be careful that you don't cut into the motherboard. I usually cut until there's just a little magnesium left and then snap the joint with my fingers.

(Basically it'll drain fast, then say I have more time remaining, then say I have less time remaining, and luckily, when I get <10% it normally manages to last quite a bit longer than it says it will).

ThinkPad 25? Or 2013 MacBook Pro.

I do pentesting, scripting, virtualization, and it would really just be great to have lots of ports, a nice screen and Ok battery life. (2-3hrs)

Native Unix environment, and decent, polished tools is main reason for MacBook Pro, older, Quad Core, also before they removed the decent ports, also 1920x1080 IPS. Iirc

ThinkPad has the nice keyboard, lots of ports, warranty, not sure if I'll keep Win10 pro or install Linux.

Pls help.

Been messing around with a thinkpad yoga 370 for around two weeks now, hinge durability aside I like it so far it is pretty versatile.

slapped a 2TB Nvme and managed to get arch+i3 working on it.
Touch works fine out of the box but I had to configure a few things like accessing two of the top row keys (favorites, and keyboard icon) and detect when the screen is in tent/tablet mode; all done through ACPI.
Beeper had to be disabled manually as well, got on my nerves.
The touchpad remains active when in tablet mode which is annoying, yet to disable it should be an easy task now that I have tablet mode detection working.

All that is left is to sort out a multitouch gesture for fullscreen mode, allign xrandr rotation with touch, and work out a simple GUI dialog for i3 when using digital pen. Using an onscreen keyboard like onboard seems to be sufficient for navigating i3 if using hands, with the exception of going into fullscreen mode since there is no home button so multitouch gesture is the only viable option.
Can login in tablet mode using lightdm gtk-greeter configured with onscreen keyboard access.

Took longer to configure than I had expected, this thing is a time sink, but I am quite happy with the results.

Guys, I'm about to try and win a bidding war for a Thinkpad T450s with an i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a 1080p display. Is $440 worth it? Really want a fast and new laptop but I'm a poor spic that's only had a free Elitebook 8440p and a Thinkpad x220, feeling too shy. Help

>> No.63398225

so /tpg/
My ideal, and I mean perfect laptop would be an x220 tablet with a FHD panel and quad core chip. USB 3.0 would also be nice. What are my options? Are there newer models that would be even somewhat close to this?

Bought a T440s a few days ago because I wanted a Linux/Dev machine. So far so good, Mint 18.2 runs smooth. The only problem is the freaking docking station. Whenever I activate the second display, Mint craps its pants and semi-freezes. I can move the mouse cursor just fine, but none of the UI elements seem to be reachable (no hover/highlight/click, etc.).

Any ideas?

Some keyboards, especially the European ISO variants, of X200-X220 era keyboards had shitty tactility compared to earlier models. X230 fixed this for ISO models.

Yup, installed Win7 and everything works fine.

Jokes aside, the issue was x-server.

i like my 2nd gen. they're thin as hell and the screens are nice. the only problem i have with it is the keyboard, which isn't that bad, really. i just prefer the classic.

Thanks for the tip! E330 however it's so broken I'd rather buy a new one. The case is done, keyboard and touchpad don't work anymore, screen is broken. I basically used it as a desktop pc for more than a year

Aight then

the closest thinkpad to the e330 is probably the T420(s) which you should be able to get for 150-300$ depending on where you live and which condition you want.

Is the X1C 2nd gen (Ivy Bridge/1600×900 TN) recommended around here? I wouldn't mind a thin&light memebook to compliment my brickpads.

The display seems actually decent, with roughly full sRGB volume and 650:1 CR.

Why spend nearly as much on something that's not worth the money, instead of paying full on something that will perform well and last? You know the trade-offs already, you're just impatient.

The poor man pays twice to get what he wants, and so does the one in a hurry.

>> No.63403274

In a bit of a rush to go to work, this is not all of them but enough to give a rough idea. Don't have the time to organise them now.
Some go in /etc/acpi/actions, some go in /etc/acpi/events, some go in my home/$USER/bin directory tried to put their locations and filenames quickly. I'll leave piecing it together to you,
Arch wiki goes on a fair bit of detail and provides examples, you need to read through acpi, acpid, and xinput sections at least.

here you go, kock yourself out

changed my user name to $USER, for some you need your username written in plain text, mainly the DBUS related stuff where $USER is not imported. There might be more elegant ways of doing it, I just built upon quick example code on the internet to cut corners. anyways I'm off

>> No.63403403

You can use xinput disable/enable {trackpad device} for the trackpad. You might also want to disable the trackpoint as well on that, it's the same but the trackpoint device.
For the rotation, it's xinput --set-prop "{touchscreen devices that are causing issues}" "Coordinate Transformation Matrix" -1, 0, 1, 0, -1, 1, 0, 0, 1 for inverted, and 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1 for normal mode.

X230 is the superior choice, if you don't like the keyboard you can swap it for a classic keyboard.
