63231939 No.63231939 [Reply] [Original] [archived.moe] [rbt]

>Mac is overpriced

a 27" 5k iMac costs $1799

lets say you wanted to instead build an equivalent PC:

A good 4k monitor will set you back $600 dollars, and you're still getting 4k instead of 5k (3840 x 2160 vs 5120 x 2880)

Using this build: ($1150)
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/vHD48d/great-intel-gaming-build

And replacing the SSD with a 60$ HDD bumped up to $80 for the fusion, halving the RAM cost, and replacing the graphics card with the equivalent radeon pro 570, adding a 40$ network card brings us to $879 for a comparable computer.

Keyboard and mouse, $40 (assuming we're being pretty cheap).

Cable, 5$ (again assuming we're being pretty cheap.

Windows: free/pirated

Total: $1524

That's a difference of $275 dollars, but for that you're getting...

-5k resolution instead of 4k
-An all in one instead of tower + lots of cables
-MacOS + the ability to dual boot Windows or Linux, vs pirated windows and no Mac opportunity
-Warranty + support
-Computer already built for you, vs having to build it yourself

When you consider all that, the Mac suddenly doesn't look so overpriced.

op this has been the case at the time of ~~NEW~~ mac releases. the problem is that since apple stays on the hardware for awhile, overtime they become less of a value.

like the current itrash can and the 1440p and 5k imacs prior to the new releases.

like for example, i do own a 2013 27in imac. i bought it mid 2014 brand new straight from apple. it shipped with a 1440p 27in screen, nvidia 755m 1gb gpu, an intel 4750 with 16gb ddr3, and a 1tb hard drive. cost me $2,100 after tax.

Can you imagine having so little going for you in life that you sit around posting this same shit day after day? You can even tell it's the same guy in most of the posts.

I know we're just memeing but this is honestly pathetic. I feel so bad for this guy.

Then why would they want an iMac? Because that's literally what it does when it's constantly overheating and thermal throttling.

>> No.63235623

Why not both?

Now that removable media is out of date, why not go back to the old days and do like they did with the LispMs where you'd have the screen and input devices hooked up by a long fibre-optic cable so you could keep the computer itself in a different room.

I'd love to have all my hardware in a rack in the cellar and perfect quiet in my study without compromising cooling and performance. All I need is a small breakout box for DisplayPort and USB.

It seems like this exists for things like medical labs, but then you have to pay a niche premium, I wish this was more widely available.

Oh, like getting Microsoft's permission to upgrade your RAM? Otherwise Windows will refuse to boot.

i'll bite. Completely ignoring macos because what's best it depends on who you ask

the screen is a fair point. it's a good screen. (not saying that better screens don't exist)
it has an i5 7500 which is the same as the pcpartpicker build
barely adequate cooling if not inadequate vs adequate cooling , i admit the pcpartpicker has a shit gpu model and no aftermarket cooling
8gb ram 2400mhz vs 16gb 3000mhz
can upgrade the ram but disassembly is the same as an iphone (heatgun and cutting glue to remove screen)
570 """"""pro"""""" vs a 1080
questionable psu quality vs a proper seasonic one with good cooling
and most importantly
almost no upgradeability vs upgrade anything you want

you can drop the 1080 down to a 1060
drop the ram to 8gb 2400
get a 120gb ssd and 1 tb drive instead of the 512 ssd
buy windows

and it will still be equal or better and cheaper than the imac in terms of raw specs.

imacs are for people that don't care for the best in anything other than looks and/or status and people with limited space. the only people i've personally seen with imacs are doctors using them as office computers.

I didn't read all of your shit but I'm sure its very nice but it boils down to something you're too dumb to consider; you're paying for macOS, in-store support and ecosystem compatibility but chiefly macOS. In general, Apple makes things without concern for price, to keep doing that is expensive.
