>CPUs
A8-9600 - Absolute bare minimum gaymen without a dedicated GPU.
G4560 - Absolute bare minimum gaymen w/ a dedicated GPU.
R5 1400 - Best with OCing & high-speed RAM.
i5-8400 - Best value for gaymen
R5 1600 - Best value for mixed uses
R7, used Xeon, Threadripper, or 8700k - Heavy multi-tasking & mixed uses

>GPUs
* Crypto-Currency miners have driven GPU prices up, using an old GPU or waiting to build may be a good idea right now.
1060 3GB - 1080p 60fps at medium/high settings, anything below this just buy an Optiplex and put this GPU or better in.
1060 6GB or RX 580 - 1080p 60fps at ultra settings, former supports G-Sync, latter supports Freesync
1070 - 1080p 144fps / 1440p 60fps at ultra settings
1080 TI - 1440p 144fps / 4k 60fps at ultra settings

Check your Mobo's QVL if your buying Ryzen
Ryzen CPUs benefit a lot from high speed RAM, 3200(+)MHz is ideal

Gaymanning question

Got an ITX "console killer" made from spare parts.

Current specs:
GPU 980
CPUCeleron G1610
RAM 8gb
MOBO Asus Pz77-I

I recently got Destiny 2, and while I know the processor is under minimum specs, if I overclock it to 3.0GHz it should work fine right?

There's really no reason this game should be a CPU hog, especially since it runs on APU's in the Xbone and PS4, but I'm getting a slideshow when I play.

Is there a way to keep the CPU, or should I just drop the 50 bucks for a non-K i52500?

I want to be able to play the game on ultra, potentially using two monitors. Because of an action at work I have the opportunity to build a new PC cheaply but I would have to order within the next month to make use of it. If this was last year or earlier this year the choice of CPU would have been easy but the timing is awkward now.

Currently thinking of
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CcsgVY
or
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sLGRD8
I would carry over my GTX 970 and Samsung SSD from my current PC (Phenom II 1055T). The prices are about ~550 euros for both of these builds in my country.

The only demanding thing I ever do on my computer is gaming. At 1080p60 right now and probably will stay there until this monitor dies. In general I tend to use things until they are absolutely obsolete but chances are that if I do upgrade a part down the line it's going to be my GPU. I don't really intend to OC either.

In the case of the Ryzen build my chosen RAM model isn't on the motherboards QVL list but the 2x8GB red coloured version is. I chucked them into pcpartpicker real quick (and the cpu cooler) and it came to 1360 pounds

300 pounds for the rest of the shit and the work they put into buiding it is pretty reasonable imo (actually nvm I just noticed it's 2k inc vat)

when I added the rest of the shit I came to 1770 pounds

second step is relying on pcpp's compatibility checker, however that only seems to check the big NONOs such as "Your mobo and CPU arent same socker" "Your CPU has no stock cooler and you didnt add one to your list" "You added DDR3 ram to a system which only takes DDR4"

I know that this is likely a very stupid thing to do, but my plans have gotten pretty wrecked and financially shit is really weird right now, was going to make a new build and that's still the plan but now I have to divide up my purchases. Long story short I'm planning on getting a 1080ti and it's going to be its own purchase probably weeks if not a month or two separated from the core components.

So purchase order is established with the answer to this dumb question, if I were to pick up the 1080ti could I plug it into my current build and use it? I'm aware the processor will certainly bottleneck it, but I should still see an improvement in general right? And it won't hurt anything right?

like I said in my original post I am entirely new to this stuff. Why should I go amd's ryzen over an intel? As far as I can see the ryzen is considered better due to it having more cores as well as being cheaper. I have also learned ( i think) today that more cores is not always better if the processor isn't as strong to begin with and isn't always more efficient since not all current games will make use of these multiple cores. Thank you, though what is "fine"? Main purpose of the build is gaming, your saying that it's not something that's holding me back?

Part of the reason for the new CPU though is I want more RAM and I can't slot DDR4 so if I'm going to upgrade that and I would probably want a new CPU anyway since I'd be getting a new board and better would be nice (as far as I'm aware).

I think comparing CPUs of different architectures by their cores and clocks is completely pointless. Only benchmarks of what you want to do with them will show how they compare. The AMD processors of the past few years had more cores and higher clock speeds but didn't even come close to the Intel ones. Ryzen being the exception in a long time.

See below wha I have in mind, might 1000w even be enough for a second GPU if I don't intent to overlock the CPU?

What kind of gaming do you want to do? If you play a few rounds of League of Legends everyday and otherwise just browse youtube and shitpost the 1300x will be fine. The 1600 is arguably the best CPU in terms of bang for the buck on the market today. It does pretty much everything very well without excelling at anything in particular really.
Modern games already struggly with only 4 threads so the decision basically depends on what you want to do.
There are 4 core Ryzen 5 models that have SMT so the have 8 threads instead of 4 or you could go with the Intel if you want to (bit hard to get and mainboards are still quite expensive). >>63059490

Alright, thanks. That's pretty great. Didn't want to splurge more on a CPU especially since I got my motherboard and processor at a bargain.

I'm looking to buy an SSD, would getting a Samsung EVO 960 be a meme? It's 70 bucks more expensive than the 850, but on paper it should be 6 times faster. Would I even notice it for every day video game use?

Depends, a 1050ti ($110 gpu) will easily get 100+ fps if graphics are set to low-medium. A 480 8GB will push 100+fps at very high details, You pick what level of performance you want it doesnt matter. The monitor matters a lot though so get a good 144hz ips panel and you will be set.

futureproof is a meme. Its far more effective (cost wise too) to simply upgrade down the line. It doesn't take anywhere near that to run VR games.

cost isn't an issue, i just want to build the chad thundercock of pcs

so my main concern is if there's a different part i could be using to improve performance rather than the cost effectiveness

Almost meaningless graph. Graphics card is not listed, and obviously it's a graphics bottlenecked situation. Regardless, most cheap CPUs run games well.

Check benchmarks. If you're looking at playing a specific game check those specifically. Honestly though 1050Ti is best price/perf and will be a whole lot better

intel is good ONLY for source games. This includes old shit from before 2013 like GTA V and emulators. For that Intel is unbeatable in terms of maximum performance.
But a everything else in the .img is absolutly correct and I loved building a ryzen 1600 cpu+mobo+8gb ram for under $300

gaming and streaming at max settings will utilize it, as will video editing. if he has unlimited money and plans on doing these things, there's no reason not to make a threadripper build.

Not really because a CPU is not the entirety of a PC. Get something good now like an R7 1700 if you want threads and get something else with better features like next gen RAM and PCIe etc later

How did they fail? I'm genuinely curious, because from what I've seen Coffee Lake has been generally well-received.

Considering pretty much every AMD CPU family up until Ryzen has been a disappointment, I'm just going off on a limb and assuming that everything Ryzen did correctly was achieved by accident. Like AMD kept headbutting a concrete wall and it finally just now crumbled.

coffee lake = overpriced nuclear generators. the 8400 is the only decent coffee processor, yet it still doesn't beat the 1600. 6 less threads, more expensive mobos, locked, worse stock cooler, etc.

Coffee lakes performance gains came from core count. Without a new architecture intel really has no place to go. Meanwhile AMD is on their first attempt with a new architecture and it almost managed to match kaby lakes ipc. Unless intel has been secretly working on a new architecture for the last couple years amds future looks bright.
