Received pic related (Hori Edge 201).

It's actually pretty good, while I was expecting it to be pretty bad.

From my experience (Cherry MX Brown, Kailh Red and Blue, Gateron Blue), this is basically a heavier red, so I think it's probably similar to black but I don't have any black switch.

That being said, while the keypress is fairly fine, I really don't like it that much for typing. It's either the keycap which are somewhat slippery or the keys which react too easily under the "main" fingers yet are tough to press for my pinkies. Something feels off to me for typing, but it's probably more related to my personal preference rather than the actual quality of the switches.

I do think if you're a gamer and don't care much about typing efficiently, it's a good keyboard though, probably better than tactile point switches.

>> No.62515762

used one for the last 6 years until it broke, yeah it's quite comfy

>> No.62515765

This is getting ridiculous. Also, the escape key needs to be replaced with a function key to make it actually usable.

Really T9 is the only way this meme could possibly go smaller, first on a number pad, then on a purpose designed T9 keyboard that takes away all the extra and unnecessary keys that the number pad would have.
>mechanical number pads are available for under $20
I'm tempted, just for the sheer ridiculousness of it.

>> No.62515844

lack of resources forces people to innovate, maybe something great can come out for this experiment where people try to type normal speed with less keys.

I have an older one in white/beige that I picked up form a thrift store for a $2 or $3, I would highly recommend them as the position they let you put your arms in is more comfortable. They aren't mechanical though.

You might be interested in this:

I didn't go right ahead and post it because I kind of want to see the mechanical T9 keypad done first, but seeing as someone is actually interested in the concept I figure I can post it. One of the draws for chording keyboards is faster input on smaller devices, but they have never achieved much popularity since they require learning an entirely new method of entry vs what people are used to and you generally can't just hunt and peck on one if you don't have experience (while options like T9 still allowed that). I also don't know how they compare to autocomplete/autocorrect depended methods of entry that people tend to use on smartphones today (other than how they won't produce unrelated words).

Pic related is another example of a keyboard designed to be better for smaller devices so that you don't need to worry about typing as precisely on a touch screen, and I found that I could get ~40 WPM without any form of auto completion/auto correct with it while I was never able to type very precisely with a normal touch screen keyboard (my smartphone only had a 4" screen). I don't know if it's still around though, or if it collects data on you as I haven't used a smartphone for 2 years now and downloaded it about 4 years ago before I really thought companies trying to collect data on me via every piece of software I use would be an issue. It's been around since the old Palm PDAs were popular though and I remember some developers implementing it in some homebrew software (DS Organizer) for the Nintendo DS.

>> No.62517868

Basically your only choices are either steno with shorthand if you're okay with depending on a computer trying to figure out what you're typing, or chording keyboards as >>62516272 said if you aren't. Two handed chording keyboards aren't going to make that much of a difference in speed though vs traditional full size options as the best case scenario just gives you a perfectly optimized keyboard for for alternating which hand types the next letter (vs DVORAK/COLMAK/others) at the cost of sometimes needing to use multiple fingers to type a letter (or in some cases with more keys, a small portion of letters). Chording keyboards really only make sense for fitting in places where you can't optimally fit a full size keyboard, such as that really small GPD laptop that posters shill on here which would likely be much better for typing on with a chording keyboard and would allow for better placement of the trackpoint.

AllSmartLife's keyboard seems to have one additional LED, RGB backlighting, and seems to feature blue switches.

The chassis looks exactly the same though. I'd wager they're even probably the same, and with the success that Hori had with its Edge, this wouldn't be a surprise the design isn't really maintained.

Keycaps are flat on the Hori while AllSmartLife looks to have the traditionnal Vortex keycaps that all cheap chinese mechanical keyboards use.

>> No.62518613

Protip: look at this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard#Identification

You especially want to be sure that what you're buying is not a rubber dome, so always look at the code number found in the sticker on the back of the keyboard; if no picture is available, request it.

I've been eyeing some Vortex doubleshot PBT caps, but I was wanting to see if there's any decent chink caps for cheaper.

Right now, I'm using some $5 ebay doubleshot "PBT" (probably ABS) caps, wanting an upgrade from these things, mainly only using them since that, though they're thin, they're textured, which is a LOT better than the painted caps many backlit keyboards come with. Thickness aside, they font is also horrendous on them as well.

Ducky TKLs are just rebranded shine 3s, and since the shine 3 is the worst Ducky keyboard ever made it kinda makes sense. Theres a reason why they cost 60-70 bucks

Is there much of a difference between red and black switches? I own the Anne Pro with Gat reds and I love them aside from the fact that they're slightly too light, and I want to order a Varmilo VA69M with Gat blacks but I'm a bit hesitant on ordering a keeb for $300+ without testing the switches first. And yes, I have a switch tester, but using one of those isn't the same thing as actually typing on a keyboard.

>> No.62527884

I have both and there is quite a considerable difference between reds and blacks, it requires quite a bit more force to register a key press and in my opinion is not as comfy as the reds. I think blacks are a bad idea especially if you are planning on using them for general use that includes typing quite a lot.

>> No.62527963

I'm a pretty heavy typer, I bottom out MX Blues and Clears, so I don't think blacks should be much of an issue as long as it registers key presses without missing.

>> No.62528015

Stick to the nordic / Swedish layout.

Using some other layout is fine as long as you never ever use anything but your own keyboard. But they you get a job and perhaps a laptop and who knows what and suddenly you're wasting a lot of time with typos because you're used to another layout.

>> No.62528031

Blacks are way heavier then blues. About 20g more. Here's the thing. Actuation force =/= bottoming out force

>> No.62528053

Yes blues are not that heavy though, I'd suggest you go to a shop and try typing a paragraph or so on blacks and see if you find them comfortable.

The Duck Duck Shine 6's keycaps are widely different from all other keyboards. They are very "short", barely a third of the height of standard keycaps. You may be fine with this. The switches are the same Cherry MX ones on earlier duck duck shine keyboards. If you're fine with it then it's great. It's also got some other nice features.

If you replace some of the keycaps but not all then it'll look pretty silly (since most keycaps are normal height). I went with the Duck Duck Shine 5 because I wanted full-height keycaps. But your preference may vary. It's also worth noting that the 6 has actual PBT keycaps and earlier duck duck keyboards have keycaps made of ABS.

The Duck Duck Shine 6 is a great board - if you're fine with those short keycaps.
