HD600. 2 options:

1) Schiit Modi Multibit + Valhalla 2

2) Schiit Jotunheim w/ Balanced DAC

Basically the question is, go tubes SE or solid state balanced? I've seen multiple people say the Valhalla 2 is basically made for the HD600 and is one of the best pairings out there. I don't use other headphones, so I don't need the versatility of the Jotunheim but I am curious about balanced.

You can use modi multibit as source for the jotunheim, anon.
Not sharing the ground makes some sort of sick sense in the output (amp -> headphones). The idea of a balanced DAC is fringe territory. AFAIK they're just using 2 DAC chips in mono instead of one in stereo to try and reduce crosstalk a little, as if it mattered at that point.

I'm thinking about getting some headphones for listening to music with but equally as important if not a tad more is how they deal with films. For gaming people used to say if you want full immersion you've got to use headphones (are these good for gaming?) so I assume headphones can provide a really immersive film experience.

May as well consider the NVX XPT100. Padding makes it an easy to wear option.
Bass rolloff starts unusually high up. Otherwise, the tone is fairly smooth and even.
A less dark/bassy option than the M50x. Some treble harshness to it, and bass unevenness.
Some people find this one uncomfortable. I though it was just acceptable with fit.

Like other vast majority cheap in-ears, too many to count, it's super bass boosted. Isolation was pretty low, if that factors in at all.

If the K702 is the same price or lower, it would generally be the better choice. No bumps in the headband.
The AKG K612 is another option. It is a bit less sensitive overall than the 701 series and lacks the removable cable, but I find it to be overall more even toned than the 701-derived models.

Yeah, LCD-2. Amazing 10/10 planar bass (totally different from 400i and PM3). It's slightly veiled up top but it mostly just lends it a relaxed sound. The only real issue I found is that the 10K spike can make the percussion in a few select songs a bit too loud. They're good enough that I feel no real need to EQ them, although they could probably benefit from EQ as every other headphone.

Open back and closed back.
It directly relates to isolation. Open backed headphones open up the enclosure. It simplifies acoustics, at the expense of letting sound in.
Closed backed headphones are more difficult to tune, but block out external sound.
But really, it's just a matter of which one sounds better to you.

Large padding mostly.
A bit of bass boost to it, but not as much some other options. Probably more even midrange than the status and m40x. Less so than the 9500s, if I remember right.

It's a "hybrid" amp that costs $70 more than the magni but provides worse performance while barely adding any of the sonically pleasing aspects of tube sound. It's not a terrible amp, but for the money esp. from schiit you can get better.

As far as decent, but still good tube amps go. The little dot mk II and mk III (the mkII is great for diy upgrades and tinkering) and the darkvoice 336se would be the best option for cheap tube amps. Those designs are output transformerless (great for headphones of high impedence) and use the tube compliments to their full potential

Bad case of microphonics.
Also subpar performance and all, not that stopped anyone from buying audio products.

The issue with the SHP9500S is that it really lacks bass. The rest of it is fine, but it lacks bass.
Most of the other headphones mentioned, m40x, cb-1, xpt100, could be taken to have at least a mild V-shape.
Equalization could clean all of them up. Give any of them a V-shape balance or flatten them out. The bass rolloff on the philips set poses a bit more of a problem though.

You should be able to work around that with an extension cable.

the only measurement out there that doesn't have ringing on an audeze headphone is also one that shows a peyer peak (which it has btw) while you try to ignore the fact that the FR is shit and praise the CSD, which is just a function of the FR anyway. what a fucking joke your argument is

Thanks for being so helpful.

What can I do to equalize it? Is there a program for windows I can find? I plan on buying a 24 bit USB monitoring interface. I use winamp... But maybe there is something better you can suggest to do that for the computer?

As far as these specs go, the SHP sounds ideal; though I love hearing treble I do enjoy a nice punchy bass.

Is there possibly a better option? You mentioned the NVX. I don't mind equalizing at all, but just curious.

>what determines great sound quality in headphones
You do. Full stop.
The listener determines sound quality because quality is subjective phenomenon. If you like it, then it is good. If you don't like it, then it is low quality.

When it comes to the stimulus, we look at only the sound signal, the end result. These can broken down into linear and non-linear results. The impedance stuff falls into the linear effects.
There is a voltage drop at the adapter, whether series resistor or real voltage divider, reducing the level of the signal that gets to the headphone. In addition, the impedance the headphone "sees" is dependent on the resistances in the adapter. You are then subject to a skew in the sound tone, as the voltage drop at the adapter is not constant at all audio frequencies. A voltage divider can be built around this issue, but at the cost of a huge drop in signal level (much less loud).
Between the non-linear processes of the middle ear and masking, non-linear distortion can be difficult to hear except with either abnormal signals or very large amounts.
There's a lot more I could say, but only if you want to.

Equalizer APO is the usual Windows option these days. People used to use it with the PEACE extension before EQAPO included its own graphic interface. I'll leave it to you what to go with.
>other options
XPT100 presents another option, as did the other headphones. HD558/559 and AKG K240 are models off the top of my head, and even more if we go with used headphones.
The obvious motive for picking something else is that you aren't going to waste as much overhead on the other headphones, hopefully. The bass EQ for the Philips set will cut into your volume level, and the bass slope is worse than average. At least the headphone is fairly sensitive to make up for it.

The EQ guide linked looks alright from a quick skim, should be fine for basic purposes.

After looking at the HD 558 and the akg k240, I'm starting to agree: I'm motivated towards less of that overhead. Some of these things you're mentioning about the Phillips set are a bit of a turn off -especially if eqing is going to compromise my volume levels.

The xtp reviews state that it is a neutral profile, and I'm not really digging the wiring set up.

I'm now torn between the hd558, k240, and the ATH AD700X...

Of those three, which is going to get me a better v shape, or otherwise balanced sound that isn't hitting a below average bass slope

>> No.62126545

Friendly reminder there's a new thread.

>> No.62126601

I don't think the XPT100 is -that- neutral, it has some bass boost.
3.5mm TRS to 2x 3.5mm TS connectors. I think.

AD700X (and most of the open backed ATH air monitor really) is also known for bass problems like the philips.
I guess you could go back to the Status Audio set for simplicity. I would still suggest equalization.
558/559 and k240 are more balanced options.
Next reply later. After sleep.
