I've been using the SSK for some time now and I'm not really missing the number pad. The higher profile keycaps threw me off at first, but it only took me a day to get used to. I was worried at first about using a heavier switch in normal use and it really hasn't impacted my typing performance. Overall buckling springs are great to type and the smaller size compared to the massive model M is great if you don't have a lot of desk space like me.

A laptop?

I've been eyeing the Asus Claymore as a possibility.

One of the things that I like about my laptop is that it types relatively quiet. I like the idea and weightiness of a mechanical keyboard but I've used some friends and it's CLICK CLACK CLACK CLICK which is fine if I lived by myself but I have a wife who is a light sleeper.

Is it possible to get a mechanical keyboard that's pretty quiet or is it hopeless and i should just invest in a good pair of earplugs?

I don't think that's a problem with something that you can't use in the first place. See, back in early 2016 this keyboard was shilled relentlessly by me and this italian guy. Little did people then know that the keyboard is not actually a functional keyboard. It does not send any information to the computer, all the usb connection does is power an internal microphone and some capacitative sensor that detect when a key is touched. Notice that I said touched, as you can't press the keys down, they are completely static. Upon a key being touched, an internal microphone plays a high quality flac file of a female voice saying "thock" with a strong french accent. Not making a "thock" sound, just literally saying "thock". Everyone who praises this keyboard is simply acting as if it were an actual keyboard out of buyers remorse. Thus it is the greatest meme of all, and grants the owners the maximal number of attainable meme points.

I've tried asking this before, but got no response so I'll try again. Has anybody here tried backlighting keys by running an individual fiber optic strand to each key? If so, how did you "feed" the light from an LED into the fiber optic strands to begin with? I'm basically just looking for a part name or phrase that I can google without getting a list of expensive, high-end fiber optic interconnects.

Second, I already have a teensy 3.2 from an unrelated project, but it seems like the 2.0++ would be the device of choice for most DIY builds that include LED controls. Is there any *physical* reason the 3.2 wouldn't work? The 3.2 has 33 pins already, so the pin count should be sufficient. I don't care about existing firmware, because I can probably write my own if I have to. I'm just wondering if there are any reasons to not use a teensy 3.2 that I'm unaware of.

Fiber optics suck for lighting. If you've ever played with toys that use fiber optics then you should know they degrade pretty quickly and end up looking like shit. Plus the lighting isn't very consistent. If you ever go to tech fairs they always give away fiber optic necklaces/wrist bands for free and those especially suck. I guess as long as the LED points into the wire then you should be fine. Using your old teensy is fine since TMK is compatible with it.

I just got my first mech keyboard last week. One thing I have about is the feel of the keys. Too many "sharp" corners on it that hurt my fingers when I make a mistake and don't hit the key perfectly in the center.

Are there any keycaps you'd recommend? Are there any keycaps that are more forgiving?

Thanks.

>>59845059
That just refers to the height of the keycap. If you take a look at cherry profile you'll see that row 1 is lower in height then row 5. In other sets like DSA they are all the same height. What this means is that if rearrange your keycaps your keyboard will look weird since R3 is next to R5. The height of the keycap has nothing to do with compatibility.

Laptops, membranes, current is a Corsair K70, but I want a tkl, save the space on my desk considering I don't even use the numpad.

Been looking at the Ducky One and the Logitech G Pro. Before anyone asks I am indeed autistic, the rgb is part of the reason I looked at the g pro. I plan to set the lights to a slight blue and purple glow, I have stress issues and it relaxes me.

Was also hoping to find something with a metal backplate, but it's not a deal breaker.

I was also looking at the MK Disco, but I'm not able to find much reliable info on KBT switches. I've read they are comparable to vortex and gateron, but I've got no experience with those 2 either.

Oi /mkg/, I've been looking at getting some linear switches, as I've been using tactiles for a while, and I want to try something linear and quiet for late night funposting, but every time I've tried a cherry red or black board, they've always have felt so grainy and plastic-y.
I've looked into things like gateron reds, and they look great, but I've hardly have found any gateron red boards, and the ones I have found are either way too expensive for a board using cherry clones, or have an odd layout.
For example, this monoprice board would be great (https://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=13787), but the enter key and that little cluster is a complete turn off for that board.

And just to help narrow down;

I want to meme it up and I'm looking for memeposting tips

- How do I not come off as desperate and lonely but still post as much of my possessions as possible?
- When is it too much? I like a veneer of authenticity, I want my purchasing habits to come off as worthwhile hobbies, not mindless consumerism and bragging.
- What are some good "hobbies" to pursue alongside mechanical keyboards? I don't want to come off as entry level and I see you guys are branching out as well. Headphones? Pens? Small potted plants?
- I can easily afford keycaps, but I don't want to buy this overpriced crap out of principle. Is there an alternative way to meme?
- Is dumpster diving for Model Ms desperate, tryhard and entry level behavior? People who post these have this air of desperately trying to fit in but I'm unsure if it's working or not and if it's something I have to do as well. In short, Model M = authentic hobbyist or Model M = hobo?
- Which subreddits do you post in?
- Recommend me a good DSLR for meme photos.
- I have no problem buying niche abominations such as 30% keyboards that I will never use (I mean come on), but if I'm buying useless crap, I want to invest smart and go straight for the meme - recs are appreciated.

>- How do I not come off as desperate and lonely but still post as much of my possessions as possible?
You can't, that's why you embrace it.
>- When is it too much? I like a veneer of authenticity, I want my purchasing habits to come off as worthwhile hobbies, not mindless consumerism and bragging.
There is no such thing as too much. People pay several thousand dollars for keyboards just because they have a slightly darker color to them.
>- What are some good "hobbies" to pursue alongside mechanical keyboards? I don't want to come off as entry level and I see you guys are branching out as well. Headphones? Pens? Small potted plants?
Pens and audiophile stuff is okay, but you could always branch out into guns, cars/motorcycles, or even HAM radio.
>- I can easily afford keycaps, but I don't want to buy this overpriced crap out of principle. Is there an alternative way to meme?
Most great keycap sets will cost you well over 60 bucks. Anything from Gateron/EnjoyPBT or GMK will last you a long time. Unfortunately for you custom keycaps will always be expensive while not really offering and substantial improvement in quality to say a keyboard that comes with gateron dye-sub PBT keycaps as stock.

The model M has a unique typing experience as the tactile and audible feedback happen at the exact moment of actuation. No other switch does that, and coupled with the fast reset time, it really makes it an enjoyable typing experience. I have and while its lots of fun to type in the large size and loud noise might put some people off. Model Ms are also pretty common keyboards, you should be able to walk into most thrift stores and buy one. You can still get brand new Model Ms today since Unicomp still makes them. The newer ones have more features then the original, such as windows keys, USB, and more customize-ability.

HHKB is a solid meme choice. If you want even more meme points then any Korean custom will do.

How much could making a keyboard PCB cost? I have a keyboard with broken PCB (some paths are damaged and a few keys don't work) and hand-wiring it feels like too much of a hassle. Did anyone here try buying a custom-made PCB?

So I'm looking for a new mechanical keyboard:

1) Budget
$200

2) Location
USA

3) Preffered switch type
Preferably brown. But I'm open to other switch types. Whichever is good for both typing/gaming.

4) Layout
ANSI

5) Form factor
Specifies the amount of keys your keyboard will have:
- 100%

6) Backlight
Would like it, not mandatory though

Also would be nice if it has a built in usb hub

they cost about the same as tai-hao Miamis, but if you want then go for them since they are in stock, while tai-hao Miami isn't.

>You can't, that's why you embrace it.
But then how some of you come off as so cool? I want to be like that.

>There is no such thing as too much. People pay several thousand dollars for keyboards just because they have a slightly darker color to them.
This is a relief. So basically I can just buy whatever and it's all good as long as I have a quality established taste?

>Pens and audiophile stuff is okay, but you could always branch out into guns, cars/motorcycles, or even HAM radio.
I think cars/bikes are too much of a chad vibe and HAM radio is almost fedora tier. I'll consider guns, perhaps go for that classic anime figurine / gun juxtaposition.

I'm just looking for a way of not buying keycaps at all. I know the machines are expensive and demand/supply is skewed towards demand and I understand why it's expensive. But I'm thinking ahead and I know when I'm over the meme, I won't be able to live with myself knowing I spent actual money on fucking keyboard keycaps.

Yeah, I know all that, I used one of these as a kid. Hated everything about it. But I'm willing to go back if that's what it takes to meme.

>HHKB is a solid meme choice. If you want even more meme points then any Korean custom will do.

Isn't HHKB just a must-have for memes? I'm looking for something beyond that, some stupid ortholinear bullshit, something that will make people react and ask questions.

Well, I just said it's too much of a hassle for me. I don't have much experience with soldering so it takes me ages to wire just a few keys.

then just get a PCB from chyna. GH60 is a good choice, though you'll still have to do a bit of soldering

If it's just through-hole mounting, then I'm fine with it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just take good pictures. If you know how to frame your shit and set up proper lighting then it should look okay.
>This is a relief. So basically I can just buy whatever and it's all good as long as I have a quality established taste?
Pretty much, just don't by consumer shit like corsair or razer. A good place to look for keyboards to buy is geekhack.
>I think cars/bikes are too much of a chad vibe and HAM radio is almost fedora tier. I'll consider guns, perhaps go for that classic anime figurine / gun juxtaposition.
I was thinking about weeaboo cars and bikes like the AE86 and TX750?, I forgot what that bike was was called. Anime figurines are always a great choice and as for guns, well depending on what you want those are usually gonna be a lot more expensive then keyboards.

Don't worry your in good company. If you splurge $150 on some SP keycaps understand that its just scratching the surface. Just look at how much people pay for key clack artisan keycaps like pic related. If you get a keyboard with high quality keycaps like the tada68 you wouldn't have to worry about replacing them.
>Yeah, I know all that, I used one of these as a kid. Hated everything about it. But I'm willing to go back if that's what it takes to meme.
The model M is a pretty common keyboard. If you want meme status then get the industrial variants or the SSK. A model F would be better, but if you don't mind paying a couple grand for an industrial SSK just to get bonus meme points then go for it

The HHKB has been around since the mid 90s and has gotten its meme status due its prestige. It was almost 200 bucks in 1995 so the price really hasn't changed over the past 20 years, but the quality has definitely improved. Many programmers like RMS and Bjarne Stroustrup have used a HHKB as their daily driver. If you don't feel like buying one then you could get something like the planck. Its a 40% ortholinear keyboard that's relatively cheap compared to similar keyboards. You could buy one and just use it for meme points. If you want a lot of meme points then just go to geekwhack and buy a korean custom. Something like pic related actually costs $250 and it doesn't include switches or keycaps
