well it is very expensive, the cheapest option is like 180 bucks, tho its made from aluminum has programmable rgb lighting, etc. If you want that layout there are other options like the Duck lighstsaver, but those are all gone too. I've had my mechanical keyboard for quite some time now and I feel like I'm actually typing a lot worse than before.

I'm a very fast typer and use the Lioncast LK20 (brown switches). It very frequently fails to recognize my keystrokes.

I'm not an expert on mechanical keyboards, so I'd be thankful if someone could tell me why that could be. Could it be due to the switch type, the quality of the keyboard or something else?

I'm currently typing on my Logitech G510 (non-mechanical) and all is well. Every keystroke is processed properly.

>> No.58135954

Brown switches are terrible, whether they're genuine Cherry MX or knockoffs. They're scratchy, make a horrible noise and the tactile bump is barely noticeable. If you feel as if you type faster on a rubber dome keyboard, opt for a linear switch based keyboard with lower actuation force. I'd recommend Cherry MX reds if you want to easily find a linear switch keyboard, but if you want a smoother typing feel then get yourself a keyboard with Gateron Red switches. Or buy the switches individually, a PCB with your desired layout and diodes and put together your own board.

>> No.58135970

But rubberdomes are tactile, why would you recommend a linear switch. If anything he would prefer topres since they are close to rubberdomes

>> No.58136173

No idea what linear switches are to be honest. Okay, I'll look into reds. How much are they? My keyboard is TKL.

Also, no idea how to get my hands on Gateron or topres siwtches. I'm from Europe.

You fell for the meme. That's all there is to it really.

You're a good typist and that's what matters, so you're basically going to excel on any keyboard, especially if it just werks.

I just come here and enjoy the pretty keycaps but there's no advantage to paying out for gimmick switches

>> No.58136994

You should use what you feel works for you and put your concern and energy into your typing. These things are really just for aesthetics and culture but no one will admit it and finally for feeling. If you don't enjoy the feeling of mechanical switches then you aren't losing out or using subpar gear by using domes that you find effective.

In short: Buy what you like. There's no losses or advantages. I own mechanical browns for the simple reason I like the slightness and I like changing my keycaps but I don't think for a moment this is doing anything a rubberdome can't do and I do overpay.

I would not want to feel super smooth keys a few months from now.

One thing is that when you rock the modifiers back and forth, there is noise made. I can't do this with the spacebar but generally the modifiers are super quiet too.

Okay got an SA icecap keycap set from PMK and I'm shocked to find I'm a feeling dissapointed. First off I have a WASD keyboard and a few of them keys have wire stablilizers such as the enter and shift key. The plastic inserts do not really fit in PMK's keycaps and slip right out. I tried using them without the plastic inserts only to find the keys wobbly and hard to type with. I shot PMK an email about this issue. Does anyone have any suggestions for this sort of thing?

put a small piece of tape on the tip of the stabilizer stem
something like this

>> No.58141667

I was thinking of buying those keycaps. I don't have wire stabilizers so that shouldn't be an issue, but how do they feel?

>> No.58141815

Thank you I will give that a shot. I assume you mean a piece of tape folded in half so each side is sticky.

Because they are much thicker than other profiles I find that the feedback and sound is muffled to a degree. I might just need to get used to them but I definitely don't "feel" the switch as much as with the little stock keycaps. These new ones dwarf what I had before. I feel silly as I didn't fully realize the huge difference in feel and do have a bit of regret as I did get cherry mx green switches in the first place for that maximum sound and stiffness. I think the new ones make it feel less stiff as well. I'm still trying to figure out whether I like them or not.

>> No.58142648 [DELETED]

It worked! Thank you, I see you meant it to have the tape help fill up the keycap crevice. Don't know how I will get any small pieces of tape that got stuck in the keycap crevice though in the future if that is ever a problem.

o/ mkg
My main board is the filco majestouch-2 with cherry blues that I've been using for a few years now, they've now got some great Gateron PBT keycaps on that I'm enjoying.

I received a fresh CM novatouch today (discounted got it cheaper than my filco). Put the provided o-rings on and I'm enjoying this board a lot. I'm not saying it's better but I can't really put them against each other, or any other MX switch I've tried honestly.
Topre feel like /good/ rubber domes, and there's nothing wrong with that. They're very responsive and feel very nice to type with; adjusting was almost instantaneous as well, I was back to normal typing speeds within an hour.

To those shilling topre switches in the thread, you definitely pushed me to go and pick up a board with them on. I can't speak about a HHKB because I've never tried one but I can't say I regret this purchase, though topre switches aren't 'the switch' like you might want to sell them to everyone.

They're just not the same as other mechanical keys and if anybody else is interested, I'd honestly recommend you play it safe and buy some regular mech switches that are more readily available if you can't find anywhere to go and try out mechanical boards in person.
(though, trying keyboards out at home for a bit makes a pretty substantial difference too, the comfort of your own computer is a big deal for something you spend hours with.)

The biggest thing for me that separates Topre from most normal rubber domes is the activation method.
I don't have to mash the key down so I am sure it activates and when I'm gaming I don't have to worry about the key deactivating.
Although I don't love Topre for gaming, it's decent and it's worth it for the excellent typing experience.

Hi there,
I am looking to get my father a mechanical keyboard. He has been visually impaired for decades but recently became fully blind. He learned to touchtype at the Lighthouse of the Blind and is a journalist, but he types on a chick-let shit apple keyboard and has been having issues with typing mistakes. Is there any recommendations you have for just... reliable, not too loudish, mechanical keyboards? I don't care about the lighting or the lettering, since he can't see it but I just want to get him something he can have a better time with. He tried the razer keyboard with orange switches? and said it was nice but I feel like there is something better out there.

I looked up the Matias Quiet Pro and a review said that it was bad quality/feel. And another review of the Corsair Gaming STRAFE MX Silent one said that the lettering came off and got stuck in their finger and they got an infection... and that'd probably be an issue since my dad literally can't see shit and I'm not home to help out... I can help with initial set up but he'll probably use it at his office that he rents out and I worry that no one will help him with maintaining stuff...

Sorry this is long.

exactly, buckling springs are loud.

Get cherry mx greens they feel way better. Literally the clickiest switch you can get and I'm loving mine. Even blues weren't very satisfying. Browns really do feel like your typing on dirt.

Is there anyway to get some nice SA caps that I don't have to wait for the whim of massdrop to get?

>> No.58155732

where to cop / where do I buy?

>> No.58155830

there are two SA profile keycaps on pmk, but they are all row 3 only. There is also that Filco set, but it won't restock until January

>> No.58155886

Almost all group buys have an iso set these days. You can check out massdrop, geekhack, deskthority and keyclack since I know those have them. If GB aren't your thing then ukkeycaps has some, but they are currently down right now

>> No.58156013

I just don't get what's the point of the key traveling (so far) beyond the activation point, It only occurred to me now that I have my hands on it, I dunno to me it seems more of a hindrance than a feature
will stiffer switches fix this? I don't know whether I should just return it and stick to my trusty membrane, I wish I had it with me right now so I could make a better comparison

>> No.58156224

I'm typing on a membrane right now and my brain is still getting used to typing on a mech. Got to say though, membrane feels.. sticky and slow compared to the mechanical switches.

>> No.58156269

You can reduce the travel distance with o-rings if you want.

>> No.58156553

Anne Pro or Royal Kludge RK61

Post images or recommended mech. under $100, bluetooth would be nice

>> No.58156607

Anne pro since it uses gateron switches

>> No.58156661

Why not the Topre clone Royal Kludge?
Also Gateron>Kailh, which is even shittier than Cherry MX.

>> No.58157001

"mx clears are too heavy" is a meme. i'm a weak little girl and i still bottom out on clears just fine. maybe if you are gaming, but it's not like his blind father will be playing games. plus heavier switches are better for preventing typing mistakes, since accidentally pressing keys is much easier if the springs are light. i think mx clears are a perfectly fine recommendation.

thats right I said it. I spent $50 for a mechanical and it sucks. not falling for g memes again

For the record here is the Keyboard im using. A Dell RT7D50 for $30 off of Amazon. Its a membrane switch that has a mechanical typing feel to it. Best keyboard ever. I gave my cheap Mechanical keyboard away.

>> No.58157573

Hey I have that keyboard to and it feels nothing like a mechanical switch. Also why did you spend 30 bucks on a rubber dome when a k120 for 5 bucks is the better rubber dome. For 30 bucks you could have gotten a mechanical keyboard.

>> No.58157591

Correct. The only mechanical keyboards that are not a meme are buckling spring, and they are relatively cheap.

>> No.58157598

I remember the old Nixeus was somewhat popular. Not sure bout this one though

>> No.58157604

Because $30 mechanical use cheap chinese rip off switches. The keyboard does feel closer to a mechanical then a rubber dome since its housing is similar to a mechanical.

>> No.58157617

the fuck are you talking about. The tactility comes from the rubber dome and not the housing on that dell keyboard

>> No.58157645

yes but housing does matter. they have imitation mechs now. all the rubber dome does is register the click when it gives way but the housing provides some resistance and feel to it.

>> No.58157679

I've got that keyboard too and you are wrong. The housing is there to hold the keycaps in place and doesn't click. Its not an imitation mech.

>> No.58157812

>membrane switch that has a mechanical typing feel to it
Bullshit. I still use one of these at work, and it it's a generic rubber dome. It feels nothing like a mechanical.

>> No.58157830

how much of a difference do O-rings actually make? In terms of travel distance
I'm kind of hesitant about getting them, especially when I'm contemplating returning the board
but it may very well be exactly what I'm looking for

>> No.58157845
File: 694 KB, 3240x2430, O-rings.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

it depends on how much of a reduction you want.

>> No.58157873

they're like a dollar a pack.
Just put one on your keys and if you want to reduce it even more then put a second one, and so on until you reach your preferred travel distance

>> No.58157886

O-Rings fuck up the tactile feel making your Keyboard feel like a membrane.

>> No.58158124

well that's kind of what I'm looking for >>58156013
it also depends what you mean by membrane feel, I came across 2 types
the shitty spongy ones and the ones that collapse under certain force threshold, which is basically what I had before

I haven't looked properly into it yet but It seems that I would have to import them from aboard, and the period when I can get my money back is running out
