Just bought my first ever mechanical, needed something for my new pc build. Mostly gaming, but a bit of typing as well. My god does it feel good to type on these things. Between getting a mechanical keyboard and a SSD for my PC I feel like I'm in a whole new world of tech.

Side note, I had typed on mx blues before and liked the feel but they were a bit too loud, and wanted a bit more feedback than reds so I figured browns would be a good mid point. Tried them in the store today and they felt mushy and shitty, glad I went with mx reds

Ducky Zero w/ cherry MX blues. Hands down best keyboard I've ever used. I use it primarily for work and some gaming. 8-10 hours a day and still feels amazing. My job revolves around data entry and this is the best keyboard I've ever used. I've used a das keyboard with browns before and they feel like crap compared to the blues. If the noise bothers you get some O dampening rings but don't go brown. MSRP is ~$120.

I bought a switch tester because it's really hard to gauge what type of switch I'd like purely from descriptions.

Always thought tactile would be best, and the stiffer the better but I prefer the Cherry blue to the green. But the tactile grey feels nice.

Also the Gateron blue feels awesome. I thought it was supposed to be the knock off brand, but I think I prefer it to the Cherry blue.

And throwing out my preconception that tactile/clicky would be the way to go, I think the Cherry black feels rather sexy.

I'm a little bit more informed now but also so fucking confused too. I feel like over the next 6 months I'll end up buying a couple more boards. And then I'll just end up wondering about Zealio switches or something.

i bought one of those $30 rk9100x keyboards and plan on swapping out the keycaps with gray and white keycaps with blue lettering then swapping out the top right 3 red LEDs with white LEDs, did i do good?

>> No.57405631

Is that the Rosewill Apollo keyboard?
Where did you get the keycaps?
Also why did you post a picture of a Ducky One?

>> No.57405723

yeah the RK-9100xRBR, it has a $50 rebate so i bought it for the price alone or else i would have bought a TKL mech on blackfriday.

i'm probably going to buy a custom ABS set because it's pretty hard to find companies making full customized PBT sets, and they're expensive.

and because its the same color palate that i'm going to put on the 9100x except for the letters.

Can't argue with that. I'd really rather buy a clone, but I might go mad waiting for someone to restock the motherfuckers.

>> No.57405804

that's a lot of money for a topre clone. You can get that keyboard for around 80 bucks when its in stock.

Heck if you spend an extra 20 bucks you can get an official topre board

If you want that white and grey color scheme you not buy this:

I think he is nuts.

My board is solid greens, and I have never had issues from steain while gaming, even considering I came to this board from browns.

Guys, I've been spoiled by my HHKB and now anything larger than a laptop keyboard feels huge and annoying. My full size cherry blue board just sits gathering dust and being a total waste until I need the numpad for some niche thing like Blender. Has anybody else found themselves in a similar situation? What do you do to make sure your KBs don't go to waste?

craigslist / ebay

Or just save your old keyboards until you inevitably need another keyboard.

Or bring it to work.

You could always trace the matrix and replace the intel controller with a teensy running custom gh60 firmware or something. I had an old keyboard like that except I ended up cutting the plate and removing the numberpad and function row to make it a 60% and then I just wired up a new matrix.

I'm getting my first mechanical keyboard in about a week, what cord do you guys recommend I buy that will last a really long time and looks good?

Firstly does your keyboard have a detachable cable?

Some decent cables can be bought here:

Looking for an all black, maybe black coloured aluminium casing (if it's possible) mechanical keyboard that is backlit. Doesn't have to be rgb or anything fancy, just good white light would be fine, rocking the quietest cherry MX switches, whatever they are. Need an ANSI layout and would like to have a numpad as well, don't need macros or any of that fancy shit either.

TL;DR What's a quiet, backlit, ANSI + numpad mechanical keyboard that's all black ('stealth' sort of look) with a decent build quality?

Also, how do O-rings work? I heard they can be added to cut down on noise but do they have any shit 'side effects?'

>> No.57408140

They're on par with simplified white ALPS, which is none too surprising considering that's what they're cloning.

Not as good as complicated, but then neither are genuine simplified white alps.

Wouldn't you at least want to try a switch tester?
If you like a smooth tactile switch with the bump at the top of the stroke then it's probably for you.
It uses ABS for all of the keycaps.
Source is Topre.
You might notice that it is topre.co.jp and you can switch the site to Japanese to see the other boards.

>> No.57408774

Well it looks like it doesn't say ABS :P

>Wouldn't you at least want to try a switch tester?
I've tried out keyboards in passing through stores and like the feel of greens and blues the most. Linear switches felt "lacking".

>> No.57408859

But Topre are basically linear. You get a perfectly even resistance until the dome collapses and the switch actuates right near the end of travel.

I'm currently looking at this Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro one in browns, since it's on sale and I'd like to take a break from my mx blue pok3r

>> No.57408870

So... bad idea?

>> No.57409192

Topre aren't linear at all. They behave like any other rubber dome in that the resistance mounts until the dome collapses, then there's suddenly zero resistance and you bottom out immediately afterward.

Instant love, although I am horrible at touch typing. The satisfaction of typing with a mechanical inspires me to learn to touch type. I am embarassed to score 46 wpm on tpye racer.
