KDE isn't all that buggy but it is bloated.
XFCE isn't outdated.
Gnome is looking good these days, there's nothing wrong with it.
Cinnamon isn't very good, I'll agree.
Unity looks good but is shit by association.

Linux is shit. It's always been shit.

Linus made the kernel as a hobby and basically said "here ya go". Then the GNU people ported the GNU shit to work with it, THEN later people thought about using it as a desktop OS so they started making UI's for it.

Windows and OSX from day 1 where designed to be a desktop OS. Linux was not.

Yeah. ThatÄS the problem.
But the last versions of 4 are perfect!
I installed Centos7 a while ago, or actually, exactly that while ago:
# uptime
21:37:24 up 7 days, 9:00, 6 users, load average: 0.14, 0.23, 0.22

and KDE didnt crash once so far. With KDE5, I had something like 2 crashes an hour (which did not really cause any issues, to be honest), but having a crashreporter pop up every 30 minutes or something and loosing and gaining your taskbar all the time gets on your nerves.

One evening, Master Foo and Nubi attended a gathering of programmers who had met to learn from each other. One of the programmers asked Nubi to what school he and his master belonged. Upon being told they were followers of the Great Way of Unix, the programmer grew scornful.

“The command-line tools of Unix are crude and backward,” he scoffed. “Modern, properly designed operating systems do everything through a graphical user interface.”

Master Foo said nothing, but pointed at the moon. A nearby dog began to bark at the master's hand.

“I don't understand you!” said the programmer.

Master Foo remained silent, and pointed at an image of the Buddha. Then he pointed at a window.

“What are you trying to tell me?” asked the programmer.

Master Foo pointed at the programmer's head. Then he pointed at a rock.

“Why can't you make yourself clear?” demanded the programmer.

Master Foo frowned thoughtfully, tapped the programmer twice on the nose, and dropped him in a nearby trashcan.

As the programmer was attempting to extricate himself from the garbage, the dog wandered over and piddled on him.

At that moment, the programmer achieved enlightenment.

It is terrible because we more or as much people who wants to add features as people who wants to fix them.

Take KDE.
That project is heading in so many directions you cannot possibly fix all the bugs. Ever.
It is not enough structured to get there.
You have widgets which had so many ways of being displayed with KDE 4 that they couldn't get them to update correctly and decided to make all that more simple in plasma 5. Now they are unusable.
Oh, and the language changed, so now people have to write new widgets, which means it will take years before KDE has widgets again if ever.
And the new widgets doesn't even work properly. I have two monitors on my desktop and the panel sometimes moves when I boot.
And when you look into why, then you realize that the design is so broken and so many things have to go right for it to actually work.
They even have a splash screen that ads a 4 second delay on login so they can fix stuff without the user noticing glitches.

Maybe things like that could be fixed, but they need a hard feature freeze and then have people work on the issues, but that is not as glamorous or fun.
And that is the problem.
People contribute because it is fun.
Not because companies have issues that needs to be addressed.

Sounds like a pain in the ass.

It was, setting it up and piecing together software was the hard part.

but once you have a stable custom DE, you rarely need to write anything else and you're set with a lightweight DE.

Because they all try to be windows, like they're not being made for a software ecosystem that has nearly 50 years of shit in it

I know it's cool to rip on Unity. I know it limits some of your options. Other than that, I will contend that it is a perfectly fine desktop environment.

Unity was ass in 10.04. Since 12.04, not even once have I had Unity shit the bed on me. No configuration fuckups, no annoying undocumented behavior, no egregious bugs, maintained by people whose lives depend on it, etc. I do most of my work in a terminal, anyway.

Yes, many of us have outgrown it. That doesn't mean it is patently bad. I recommend anybody that is interested in Linux to use the latest LTS release with Unity only and have yet to find anybody disappointed with it in comparison to Windows. Short of tiling window managers, I can't think of a DE more solid than Unity.
