Rebooting a general, I'd like to know more about HP's retro line of workstation keyboards, C1405A or C1405B, I like their design a lot but don't know how it feels to type with.

Here you go.
Browns are an ok starter switch for those who can't choose between the clicky and linear camps, but ultimately they're very mediocre.
Reds are more specialized and better at what they try to be, but some can't cope with the complete lack of tactile feedback.

Reds might be too light but they are more common while blacks could be too stiff and they are more rare.

The people that say they don't like it is because the tactile bump isn't too pronounced and just feels like a scratchy red. That's why clears and gateron browns are recommended over cherry mx browns. The bump on the clear is more pronounced and gaterons feel smoother and more tactile.

>> No.55532421

Browns dont feel the best but I got them cos they are still a good compromise. I can't have them too loud and reds aren't tactile enough. If you sit there and press the buttons carefully for the feel you will notice the 'mushy' feel but once you start typing or gaming and they feel comfortable.

I'm currently typing on a ducky shine 3 full sized with cherry mx browns. I feel like the browns are kinda too wobbly for me. The keys wobble too much on press and it just sort of feels mushy.

I heard the mx clears are much better browns and are more solid feeling. Are there any mx clear boards that cost $80 or less, maybe even mx clear knockoffs? What names do the mx clear knockoffs go by?

I also like the feel of mx blues but they're way too goddamn loud. Is there a quiet blue switch?

Basically, I want something crisp and firm where there is no audible sound other than the actuation point and bottom out.

I want a board that sounds like the 62g clear or 65g clear.

What's making that sound? Is it mostly the keycap material, the plate, or the switch itself?

Mostly the switch itself. I have an isolated MX clear and it makes the same noise bottoming out held in my hand, on a plate, mounted in cardboard, and with ABS/PBT caps. It sounds like the guy isn't bottoming out as much with the 65g clears so it's less clacky.

My perfect layout is the keycool hero 84. Too bad it's out of stock with the mx clears.

Do you know any other boards with similar layout to the keycool hero 84 but with mx clears? The main thing I like about the kc 84 is there is no spacing between num and function keys.

I've had it build for just under two weeks now and I'd say I'm pretty used to it already. I am surprised how easy it's been to get used to, and I'd might even say I prefer the staggered columns now, I don't know.

The main thing which I've been messing up is the backspace/space. It's not uncommon for me to press one of them too many times, or to accidentally press them. But I'll get used to this before too long.

I still haven't programmed it to fit my own liking, so it should get even easier once I do that.

I run a flossed Model M, and I have a shitty Focus FK-2001 in the closet. Sometimes I think about refurbishing the FK-2001 with alps quietclick switches, but I dunno if i can deal with the bigass enter key.

The Model M is spectacular, though, especially after doing the whole 'floss mod' thing. For those who don't know, you just line the inside of the springs with Oral B Super Floss. It changes the actuation of the keys a little, but it almost completely eliminates the high-pitched ringing that the keys would make so the sound doesn't carry nearly as far.

Alright /mkg/, what's a good keyboard that's ~$50 or less?

Doesn't even NEED to be mechanical, just a good keyboard. I really need a new one, but I don't feel like paying $80 for a Rosewill.

if I can, where?

they are white ALPS, and I'm not sure you actually broke it. the top housings are meant to come off for cleaning, they're just difficult to put back together properly (but so is soldering a replacement)

individual spares are best found on other donor boards (15-20 bucks)
