I'm looking to buy a TKL ISO DE keyboard with MX reds. I want to put Thick Cherry Caps on it, so the board must have Cherry Stabilizers.
The only board that fulfills these requirments seems to be the CM-Storm Rapid i. It looks pretty decent except for all the LEDs i don't need.

Does anyone know if it's possible for cherry key caps to hit the LEDs when bottoming out? If that's not the case I guess I can live with 88 unecessary LEDs...

I said fuck mechanicals and bought this rubber dome K40.

First thing I noticed was the brightness of the LEDs was MUCH better than the brightness of the mechanical k70. Look at the picture. The K70s will blind you, but the K40's LEDs are purely and beautifully functional. They'll let you see the keys in the dark without blinding or distracting you or lighting up your ceiling.

It's also quieter, and I can rest my thumb on the space bar without setting it off every 2 seconds.

Let us compare Topre with Cherry switches.

>high durability and consistency over time
Check.
>mid keystroke activation
Check.
>replaceable keycaps
Check.
>no rubber
Nope. Topre uses a rubber dome to provide superior silent tactility. The domes are bigger and higher quality than those of your typical rubber dome keyboard.
In contrast the silent but tactile Cherry switches are kind of an afterthought, created by putting a slight bump in the plastic of a linear design. Even Cherry were surprised by their popularity.
>physical contact point
Nope. Topre switches instead sense the chance in resistance as their spring compresses, unlike a typical rubber dome keyboard which relies on contact surfaces being pressed against each other. This difference greatly reduces wear.
In contrast Cherry switches have the slider rubbing against a metal leaf that bends to make contact. This makes that bent metal leaf a very common point of failure.

I used to use a Model M many years ago. Currently using shitty cheap rubber dome just about anything would be an improvement on.

I don't necessarily want to go all the way to buckling spring, because choice is very limited and I would like NKRO. We don't really mind noise.

I type on ISO 104 key, GB layout. 30 years in ISO, so I'm not changing.

I was thinking either Cherry MX Greens or Matias clicky switches. I'm kind of drawn to Matias but I'm worried about the relative selection of boards and keycaps and I might have trouble getting ISO layout.

Floating keycaps boards look nice but how are they to type on? To clean? And how do they react to a cat sitting on them? (Like it or not, this is going to happen.)

Okay, got the soarer's converter hooked up to my IBM EMR keyboard. I think my keyboard tray is going to snap under the weight of this thing.

Typing on it, layout aside, is a different experience than anything else I am used to. I stray toward lighter keys, and these are a bit heavy for me, I think.

Next step is to enclose the controller inside a case. I had to desolder the cable from the DIN connector as it was frayed, so I've soldered the controller directly to the end of the cable. The metal, inner sheath is also a bit frazzled at the end, so I'm going to hide it inside a project box I got locally.

It's nice to see that all the keys work, though.

You'd think it'd be easy to find a nice, metal, clean, minimialist mechanical keyboard without red backlighting, extreme logos, the aesthetic of Michael Bay's Transformers and the word "GAMING ELITE" plastered all over it. Especially because mechanical keyboards are fairly premium and designer as it is.

To add insult to injury, this looks pretty great, but as you can see on this Amazon page, if you don't want brown switches, you need to get the edition with this FAGGY RED RACING STRIPE ON THE SIDE. Just bought a Tomoko mechanical pretty cheap. Knock-off blue switches, reviews were pretty good, and it's "spill-proof."

Has anyone used any Tomoko keyboards before? Any opinion on what they're like? I'm not a keyboard aficionado and this will be my first mech keyboard in the past few years. Good one to start with?

So quick question- i got one of these cheapo keyboards (Not my first mechanical keyboard, but the first one I've wanted to actually open) and these stabilizers and keycaps look weird, aren't the stabilizers and sides of the caps supposed to be in the shape of a cherry key stem (i.e. a cross)

Switching the keycaps with my other keyboards caps (which look normal) yield no issue, the keys fit fine and they don't feel like they have any extra wobble. Can I buy Cherry style stabilizers, and should they fit into this keyboard? Everything else spacing-wise is standard, so I don't imagine that they should have any issues fitting, and if they do oh well I have extras for my other keyboard for some freak accident.

I've done soldering before: my hands shake. I know I suck at it, so I'll ask a friend for that bit.

I also know someone who's extremely good with wood. Someone mentioned a keyboard with a walnut base earlier in the thread - does anyone have one? Does that work well? Maybe I should dust off the CAD.

Is there anyone who'll do custom laser-etched baseplates?

Looking around it does seem to be challenging to find keycap sets for Matias. Any suggestions? Do Signature Plastics do ALPS/Matias keycaps?

I'd recommend making a bottom row like on the old apple keyboards for your keyboards since old AEKs can be picked up quite cheap in a variety of layouts and have some really nice PBT dyesubs on them.

You can use this here to build a backplate for your keyboard:
http://builder.swillkb.com/

The keyboard in pic related has a base cut from a solid block of Maple. Works great.
