The shine comes from your oils corroding the plastic, making it smooth.

Your best guess would be to sand it down.

I have 2 MX Brown boards, one is pretty new (~1 year probably) and the other one is at least 10 years old.

the tactility on the old board is way weaker than on my new board. are there different versions of the brown switch or do the springs/plastic degrade over time?

Restore? Not really. Some learn to love the shiny look and feel.
Functionally wise there's not much that changes unless your legends are printed using a less durable technique.
The key to picking good keycaps is really to avoid the ones with really thin walls and looking for double-shot legends (which ABS is good at) or dye-subbed legends (good for PBT, but can only print darker). Then they'll function for a long time.

Sanding would probably just make it more smooth. ...unless you used rough sand paper, but then you're basically just scratching it (at best creating a "brushed" look).

what's the noppo choco like?

So I dropped a soldering iron on the edge of my board by accident today and ruined a couple of keycaps. Hunting down replacements made me think of you guys after I haven't been here in over a year. Thought it might be nice to write a bit of perspective as somebody who kind of dropped out of the market, and has no desire to change up anything.

So, here's what I got.

TG3-BL82 75% modified with removable cord and full metal case. NKRO, gray tactiles with vintage black springs for most things (basically clears with a linear force curve) and regular grays for spacebar/caps/enter/etc., regular linear vintage blacks for modifiers like ctrl/alt/shift. LED's way toned down and swapped out for 80's style acid green ones.
Separate numpad with all regular gray tactiles except a blue for numlock.
2 dampeners on all keys. DSA profile (what you're stuck with if you want aftermarket caps on a 75%, minus maybe a couple SA sets).

This is what I use every day. Good tactile feel. Heavy enough for my liking with my heavy-handed typing. Throw not too long and not too short. And relatively quiet compared to clicking switches.

Caps are an ABS/PBT mix. The high use ABS keys are starting to shine after a year. The low use ABS and the high use PBT are not.

Switches I've tried.
Red/Black/Blue/Brown/My/Clear/Green/CapacativeBucklingRubber/RubberDome/Scissor Switches/BucklingSpring

Others I still own.
Unicomp Ultra Classic Model M
1984 Model M
BTC-5100 capacitive

I honestly love the Model M's but I prefer something quieter and that fits in my lap for typing every day. Not a big fan of rubber dome of any type but capacative was better than normal and scissor to me. Reds were way too light. Blacks are okay but I don't really like linear. MYs and browns were just gritty reds. Clears are great but I don't like the way the force ramps up at the bottom. Blues are too light. Greens are great but they are too loud.

So just one guy's perspective who found what he liked after trial and error.

Getting rid of resonance from your keyboard via dampening what the case sits on will certainly help, since the plate is resonates into the case.

I'm not so sure about how well it'd work when the insulation is under the PCB, but it'd certainly be worth a try.

I have a feeling most laymen would wonder if I misspelled the word "dampen", but I'll make sure to use the term "damping" when I'm around non-laymen from here on.

I don't have one, but IIRC they have like 2-3 key rollover so you can't press many keys at a time and that may be an issue in many games.

Other thing is the actuation is high so unless you think you can handle it and don't have a preference for lighter actuations you can suffer from fatigue from repeated presses.

I think it's worth a try if you're curious, they never drop in value so if you buy one you can probably sell it back for what you got it

Nothing so far, I just set that up for the picture.

I'm not sure what you'd want to do on that. It'd certainly be a viable option with a tablet sized screen or just an external monitor, otherwise it's hardly suited for doing anything, at least not when your desktop with a dual monitor setup is right in the other room.

It seems pretty pointless to shell out ~300USD for a glorified rubber dome when you can get mechanical switches of your preference for cheaper. (I don't even have a high res camera to take pictures if I buy a meem Topre board)

IMO the Topre switch design is one of the best - you don't have to bottom out keys to actuate like Rubberdome, but also doesn't suffer from hysterisis like Cherry switches.

This theoretically means that keys should have much better long-term consistency and durability compared to rubberdomes or cherry switches.

The feel of typing on Topre really is like a hybrid between rubberdome and mechanical, so if that is your thing then Topre is for you.

Personally after having used normal rubberdomes, cherry brown, cherry blue, cherry red, and unicomp buckling spring, Topre is my favorite overall.

>Analog Switches
Topre has been showcasing prototypes with analog input for over a year now. 256 levels of pressure.
Funny thing is that they probably didn't even need to modify their basic switches much to get it to work. Standard Topre switches work through capacitance and not physical contact, with the board sensing the change in resistance as the spring compresses.
In the normal models it's set up to register the key press at a certain threshold. So to do analog input you'd simply get rid of that and instead pass on the multiple levels of pressure.

Oh wait, this is some hip startup begging for money on Kickstarter. Of course it's gets more hype than some old company that is known to produce real and reliable products.

It's also funny how it's yet another bastard son of the Cherry design with yet another feature shoehorned in, when the Topre solution is so much more elegant.

I'm looking for a keyboard with...
>blue switches
>compact (TKL or less-sized)
>backlight (for seeing letters in the night)
>cheap (because FUCK YOU !)

I don't care about Cherry or Kailh brand for switchs, so I've looked on eBay and found this :

What's your opinion, /mkg/ ? I know it sounds too cheap and may be not as good as a HHKB or something but I don't want to spend more than 50$ on a keyboard.

Get the magicforce, it at least has a standard layout.

>> No.54752407

I don't care about the switches, I just want the cheapest possible mech keyboard because I never used one before. If I like the feel maybe I can buy a more expensive one later. If there's any option between $20~$30 dollars would be perfect.

>> No.54752434

Because I'm not english, I need to learn QWERTY layout first. I'm tired of being on AZERTY for programming.

Magicforce ? It's 50$, and it's really tiny, is the build quality nice ? I want something durable.

>> No.54752620

if you don't know what you want you are going to have a bad time. I recommend you to test a few different switch types in an electronics store near you or use a testing keyboard before buying anything. Cherrys compact keyboards are rather cheap and nice, keep that in mind for when you know what you want.

>> No.54752674

I live in a third world country anon, we don't have eletronic stores with mechanical keyboards here, this is why I want to buy a cheap chink mech keyboard.

>> No.54752691

I've got one of these in my cupboard if anyone wants to buy it. PM me on geekhack: Jaffers

And yes, it's got vintage browns

>> No.54752702

I have one and the case is warped so one of the feet doesn't actually touch my desk. It also has some key repeat rate "feature" that just fucks with games if I enable it by mistake. It is a cheap keyboard in price and quality

Can you send them back? Where do you live? Prices vary a lot.

I have one.

No complaints in terms of build quality, externals and internals are both perfectly fine.
As long as you don't fuck with them like I did.

How would a 60 key keyboard, or whatever the small size is affect games (Arma and Dayz) with keybinds normally bound to numpad key, I know I could rebind everyone, but would they be automatically rebinded or is it all manual?

>> No.54753374

Keycaps aren't that expensive, but if you want something that accomodates for the nonstandard POS you have it's going to take a fair amount of searching and money.

>> No.54753482

Yeah, I've been thinking of getting the bezel cut a bit. I'm a bit conflicted about it though since I to some part also like the way it looks with the fat-ass bezel. Reminds me a bit of the ducky mini.

Which has a more pleasant feeling overall in typing, matias click alps switches or topre? I know it's subjective but I don't know anything about either switch types, other than the fact that topre is supposed to be 'good rubber dome'.

>> No.54753803

I'd say Topre, but the only reference I have for matias switches are dampened cream alps, so my judgement may be a bit skewed.

i have boards with orange alps and matias QC
i have to say topre is better feeling than either

>> No.54753927

they couldn't be more different, really. It's up to preference in this case. Topre are a bit softer, while Matias are crisper, way crisper in case of the clicky ones.
Although I don't get why you'd want either Topre or clicky Matias, why not quiet clicks?

That's the fucking opposite of ergonomic! Having your arms hunched together is bad for you.

I have mouse shoulder.

>> No.54754377

I guess there's a lot of midgets in this thread or something. My arms are perfectly straight with a full-sized and mouse during gaming, and I only have to angle one slightly for typing.

With a 60% I have to angle both elbows in just to type. It's not more comfortable or ergonomic for me.

>> No.54754428

You have to? You can't place it like a TKL/Fullsize?

>> No.54754449

you realize a 60% is the exact same size as a full size where you type, right?
it's just missing the keys around it

>> No.54754497

Then I have to angle it even more (due to smaller bezel), and more often because there's no nav cluster.

>> No.54754747

After using a shitload of mechanicals, I can confidently say that you'll enjoy what you're typing on if it's a decent quality board regardless of the mechanical switch. The only difference is what you deem (subjectively) ideal.

Topre are soft and chocolately, ALPS are like crisp peanut brittle. BS are like a heath bar.
