These mint NPKC caps I got in today are delicious. They also have this really nice chalky sort of texture.

Unfortunately they don't agree with my costar stab boards. Apparently people have to sand down thicker PBT sets because sometimes the fronts rub against the stabilizers. Another reason cherry stabs are superior~

Jack's Planck and Preonic are back up on Massdrop for anyone who's interested in ortholinear (grid) keyboards. I'm strongly considering joining the drop for one, especially as he's including Zealios' as a switch option...

It depends.

If you have a specific keyset in mind, do it.

If not, go ahead and get it with their caps. They are nothing special, just basic stock caps (that you can get anime faces printed on) but way better than the torture of having a keyboard and no caps.

File: 271 KB, 816x1224, gateron-PBT_GMK-ABS.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

PBT really isn't made to handle double-shot legends. It's hard to mold small details in it so it comes out a bit wonky even with the right equipment to handle the tougher plastic.
So you're left with either printed (which will wear/get dirty), dye-subs (can only make legends darker than the plastic) or blanks.

There are several types of ABS and the one GMK uses isn't the cheap stuff that gets shiny after maybe a year or two.
I'd also argue that thickness is the defining quality of good keycaps. It cannot be faked and has a more pronounced impact on feeling, sound and durability.

Yeah, but TKL to 60% gives you options for programmability and neat layered stuff like easier to reach home/end. 40% looks like it shakes stuff up making you go up and down layers a bunch. I'm wondering if I'm missing something here for why they're so appealing.

>> No.53767061

Do you happen to know what switches they use? I'm thinking clears, but I've never really tried typing on a non-clicky switch.

>> No.53767075

I think my habit was more about arrow keys than mouse, but same concept. I play an MMORPG where asd were the main action keys and arrow keys were movement.

One of them uses clears (I believe he prefers clicky but didn't want to be a nuisance), the other is a normie faggot pleb who uses browns at work and at home because he doesn't into mechanical keyboards (like anyone who choose browns)

Secondly, or really instead of, do you know whether I could fix my model m? I spilled water on it like a degenerate and now certain keys don't work. I'd really like to fix it if possible, I love the keyboard. Anyone know how to do it on my own or where to send it? This is an impossible request. As far as I know, the only keyboard with built-in caps/ctrl switch is the HHKB which doesn't come larger than 60%.
Also, you can't just remap a 100% keyboard to switch the keys - not without physically rewiring shit yourself.

I've been wanting a mechanical keyboard for a long time now and I finally got the money to get one. I'm really excited here.

1. Budget
I have $129 total from an amazon gift card that I can spend on it, which also includes tax.

2. Location
USA, Texas

So if I understand correctly the less clicky and tactile and the less actuation force the better for gaming while more clicky and actuation force is better for typing?

I love the sound of the click but some people have told me it gets annoying? I use my computer to type quite often and game every now and then. Should I just go with MX Blues?

4. Layout
ANSI, assuming that's what i'm most familiar with as an American

5. Form Factor
Tenkeyless, but I want arrows. I guess it can be full size if it fits my other criteria more than the tenkeyless ones.

I also love minimalistic designs over razer like designs

6. Backlight
Are there any that have backlights that I can turn on and off at will? If not i'd like to have backlights.

Is the Model M's 2KRO really that bad for gaming? I've been wanting to get one since I've heard that they're nice to type on, and they're probably a lot easier to find than the really niche keyboards I hear people talking about here. Not to mention, it wouldn't surprise me if their overall build quality is better than gaming-oriented shit. I wouldn't be using it for emulators or console style games where you're expected to be able to press more than two buttons at once, since I already have a Dualshock 2 with a USB adapter for that.

It helps save desk space. And neckbeards think they're cool for doing it. Myself, I'm using a Logitech K360 non-mechanical wireless keyboard for my desk space savings, and I love it. I still want to get a bigass Model M for the cool factor though.

CM quickfire rapid-i with Cherry MX Blues is what I'd recommend you. Has backlighting that can be turned completely off or to like 4 other different modes (without software too, wew).
Blues are clicky, but it's really a nice click. Just as long as you don't bring it to a quiet office or library or something. If you plan on doing that, look for something with Cherry MX Clear switches.

I'm looking for something more colorful. I love the backlight settings on that but white is boring. I'd prefer blue or green or red.

The reviews also seem lacking, although maybe that's just my paranoia.

Are there any colorful ones like this on amazon? I'd LOVE to have green keys.

I really do appreciate the help though, thank you for taking your time to recommend that one to me. Do you have it?

>> No.53781113

those keycaps cost well over a hundred dollars

I'd recommend looking into Tai-Hao doubleshot ABS if you want colorful on the cheap.

In general, you will want to switch out the keycaps if you want good quality and/or different colors.
If you want cheap colors, go for some ABS, but know that the quality of the plastic is shit (literally shit). PBT feels much much nicer, doesn't shine and is more durable - but also more expensive.

Also, consider if you want your color from keycaps or from your backlighting.
The Coolermaster Storm Quickfire TK has blue backlighting. There's also the Ducky Shine which has RGB backlighting, but I'm not sure what switches are available, possibly only reds (which you don't want).

If green keys are custom only and cost well over $100 then I'll pass and go for sleek black instead.

I do want non white backlight though. I'll look into the cool master storm, thank you! Why is it cheaper than the cm quick fire rapid I though?

>> No.53781298

Probably just availability.

I'd actually recommend waiting on the CM Master Keys Pro S, as it has full RGB backlighting which it seems you want.

Also look at the Ducky One TKL and the KBP v80.

These are kind of franken-boards, two are branded as M but all three have F guts, with capacitive springs and no rubber.

They also use industrial type connectors, feet, and have drainage holes

IMO no, but get a Soarer's Converter if you really must press 50 buttons at once. Those get you NKRO and USB, with full custom macro.

>> No.53781406

They're not good for gaming, but the main reason is that buckling spring just isn't great for that. Ideally, you want a lighter switch, especially one that doesn't put about 1/3 of the total travel between the actuation and release point.

magicforce 68 with outemu black switches if you're deadset on getting linear switches (you mentioned reds in your post).

you ain't getting cherries for less than fifty unless you get a great deal used (I actually have a CM board with Cherry Reds that I got for $40 shipped).

How about ANY mechanical keyboard that's at least SOMEWHAT optimal for typing?

I don't have much money to spend. (Before you ask, I'm paying off massive debt and also I'm an amphetamine addict.)

I've researched for several hours and still can't find anything decent under $50 that's not fake Chinese shit.

Why do you think the Chinese shit isn't optimal for typing?

Do you have a problem with your current keyboard? Obviously I can't make financial decisions for you but mechanical keyboards are by and far a luxury product that aren't necessary for most people.

Idk, I just read some reviews that said most Chinese mechanical keyboards are frauds and actually membrane.

I type so much that I have stress in my fingers and have to stop writing for several minutes. It's actually a real problem and my shit tier cum-crusted Dell membrane keyboard is killing me.

You can take the cap off and see if they're membrane, you dumbass.

Also, this isn't very common.
In fact, I've never heard of anyone getting scammed into buying a membrane keyboard under the pretense that it was a cherry switch board.

The golden rule is that you either pay $120 for a good board, or you pay $60 for an exceptionally inexpensive board and $40 to replace it's shitty keycaps.

Either way, it's gonna cost you at least $100, more if you're a yurocuck.

>> No.53781872

I know, I know. But even the shittiest budget mechanical keyboard would be a 10x improvement. The best mechanical keyboard would be a 20-30x improvement, but for now I'd be happy with a 10x improvement.

Is this really true? Why do you need to replace the keycaps—comfort or a real necesssity?

There's nothing wrong with the board, switches, or keycaps. They use cherry MX clones, and cherry switches aren't anything unique to begin with.

You can easily find donor board off eBay with doubleshot or PBT caps for 20-25 bucks. 60-70 bucks all-in is definitely worth it.

How much did replacing the keycaps cost you?

How do you like the white LEDs?

If you don't mind, could you post a picture of it and if camera can capture it a picture of what it looks like with the LED's in the dark?

I'm stuck between the quickfire TK and the rapid i. I just don't think white LED's would look too good.

>> No.53782334

Honestly, I have the backlighting turned off mostly, or at lowest brightness setting. I spent ~$50 on some pbt Vortex keycaps in ISO nordic layout, which I'm happy with. The glow effect of the backlighting is nice, since the new keycaps aren't transparent. Can't take pics right now, sorry, maybe when I'm back from work but that won't be in another 10 hours or so.
The good thing about white backlighting is that it's much more subtle and can go with any kind of keycaps, whereas otherwise you're limited to colors that would fit your backlighting.

>> No.53782349

Yeah actually, I just realized that. White backlighting goes with any color.

What color are the keys that you bought?
