Two minor issues:

I wouldn't define any switch as "the standard" (not really sure what that's supposed to mean in the first place)

I'd go with "drawn out" tactile bump rather than "long smooth" tactile bump. Cherry switches aren't really smooth by default and I'd say that the formulation "drawn out" fits better.

"long smooth" would be more fitting for tactile zealios.

That's all I can complain about. This is looking really sweet.

There are a few autists who lurk this board who try to impose their hipster standards upon the rest of us. They lived with their parents well into their late 20s and as a consequence, they're very insecure about being perceived as immature. They believe that purchasing conservative looking keyboards will compensate for their deeply seated feelings of inadequacy.

They pretty much ruin this board.

WASD caps are generally regarded as terrible. If you're buying from WASD, just get the barebones without caps.

As a eurofag, mechanical keyboards are going to be even more expensive than they are already, you're not really going to get around that. And there's also a rather limited selection of keycaps available. My personal suggestion is to just get blanks (corus-kb has nice PBT blanks that come in ISO (they also have printed ones in various EU language layouts, but those have laser printed legends (this is bad because the print isn't very durable)). There are some PBT sets with ISO options (for example you could get a set of your choice from pimpmykeyboard.com and iso modifiers in the same profile as your set (though you'll still be lacking some legends for your meme language)).

Another option is looking for old cherry my keyboard with ISO layout and harvesting the caps from those, they come in all kinds of variations and you'll have to do some research and searching (and it may not be that cheap), but it's also a viable option.

tl;dr you're half-fucked if you want ISO, it's not going to be cheap in any case. Consider switching to ANSI, that's what I do.

Also please remove your language from my country and stop forcing us to learn it in school. Or get some more sensible grammar rules.

In any case, welcome to the world of meme keyboards.

That's an HHKB in the background (you probably already guessed as much) and what used to be an old apple extended keyboard with dampened cream alps. I took it apart, got some help from a swedish guy, put the switches and caps on a plate and wired it all to a teensy.

It's fully functional, but it's still lacking a case and I'll redo the atrocity that is the wiring to the teensy so I can make it a bit flatter. The case will be cut out from a solid block of maple wood. Here's my build log if you're interested:

https://geekhack DOT org/index.php?topic=78992

I don't have any personal experience with them, but 50 bucks for thin abs is certainly not worth it unless you have some kind of really special print you absolutely want on your caps. You can get good PBT sets for that price (alas, rarely ISO).

Compatibility shouldn't be a problem (assuming that you are talking about pic related in ISO).

Same story here, had to pay 40 euros for my tester. Clears don't make much sound if you're not bottoming out, personally I prefer them over browns, the bump feels like a bump and not like a grain of sand stuck in the switch. Also if you're coming from membranes the higher actuation force might help you to not bottom them out. At the end of the day though it's just my opinion,it always comes down to personal preference.

No, that's not what I meant (as should be quite obvious from what I said, perhaps you have some issues when it comes to reading comprehension?)

So far I've advised the frenchfag on ISO keycaps, linked an anon to a guide on how to determine whether his caps are PBT, gave some more input to the anon whose making that nice graph on cherry switches, explained my current build project to an anon and hooked a friend of mine up with the cherry doubleshots guy.

In terms of imposing my preferences, I will not deny the following:

I recommend ducky keyboards if someone is looking for a keyboard with fancy lights or asks whether they should get a ducky. I have a Ducky Shine 4 myself, I've opened it up and messed around with it and I can attest for the build quality.

I recommend not getting browns. They have the weakest tactile bump compared to all other tactile cherries and feel like linears with dirt in them.
I've used browns, reds and clears on proper keyboards for typing before, so yes, I know what I'm talking about.

I do not recommend getting backlit cooler master keyboards. I've had one myself before passing it on to a friend (who is now complaining about issues with some keys not registering, probably due to cold solder joints). I've taken the Quickfire TK apart myself and it's a piece of shit. The metal plate is thin, the case is flimsy and easily bent, the bottom row is non-standard as shit (even though the pcb would allow for a standard one) and the spacebar was a wobbly mess on the one that I had.

I don't actually shill the HHKB (unless you call posting pictures shilling) to people. Italobro is in charge of that. The only instances on which I've recommend a HHKB to people was when they were asking about HHKB vs. Novatouch or on rare occasions when anons were complaining about bottoming out hurting their fingers (though I've also told them to try out o-rings or soft landing pads).

Now get lost you faglord.

Honest answer:
Most physical keyboards are technically mechanical. But they're not very interesting.

The enthusiast community instead only applies the term to a subset of boards that fulfill additional requirements. They differ slightly from person to person but most revolve around the idea that some mechanisms are better.
It can be stuff like high durability and consistency over time, improved catering to tastes for look and feel, the complete lack of rubber components etc.

This makes them interesting and worthy of discussion. A definition is worthless if it cannot be used, so we made a new one up. Yes, it's technically wrong, deal with it.

time to build that matias custom I've been thinking about

>> No.53429356

that doesn't answer any questions. a keyboard can be upgradeable in a lot ways, depending on what you got you can replace the keycaps, the case, the switches, the leds, the case, the cable, the list goes on, with reasonable ease.

>> No.53429457

That there doesn't seem to be anything between 2.25 and 6 available bother me so much. I want to build a Matias board with a spacebar around four units long but don't want to go with a two spacebar solution.

Hold me.

>> No.53429690

Would be nice if they actually specified the material.

>> No.53429746

based on the color codes they seem to be PBT

>> No.53429764

Yeah, it's a bit convoluted but the color code does specify what material it is.
You can just look for them under each section: http://pimpmykeyboard.com/colors/

Friendly reminder that 60% keyboards have smaller keys and are therefore not suited for people with big hands.

Got for free Roccat Ryos with black switches, any opinions on it?

Whats the cheapest mechanical keyboard i can get in canada?

>> No.53430731

Some cheap knockoff from aliexpress. Not that I'd recommend it, but I've seen mechs with knockoff switches for 30 bucks.

Loving my new keyboard with mx browns for stepmania / osu!mania. I've improved some scores by almost 10 percent compared to my now-retired rubber dome keyboard and am finally managing to combo up ~24 notes per second. This is fucking bliss.

Oh and I put some O-rings on it after the first day of use because damn.

>> No.53430977

>not reds for osu!

Is stepmania any good?

>> No.53431143

>Is stepmania any good?
It's what I prefer.

And I didn't like reds when I tried to play on them for a couple of weeks. Browns have this nice little grit on the actuation point which I only really notice north of 15 notes per second single stream but hey, it's there.

gaymer shit

You sure are quick to notice.

Still has good build quality though.

Why would you do this to me? For some reason my mouth started watering when I saw them.

Why do so many mechanical keyboards have backlighting?

>> No.53434781

Ducky makes non-gamer MX red boards, as does KUL

the CMstorm keyboard isn't that gaymery, only hte keycaps are

>> No.53434803

Once a company has put in a more advanced controller chip they might as well stick some LEDs in it. It doesn't add too much to cost and looks cool for marketing.
Normal people don't expect a $120 keyboard to look normal. They want a big monstrosity with weird edgy design and enough lighting to start a small night club.

I hate it too, but companies need to make money. It's often possible to turn them off.

Are you guys joking, or genuinely retarded? You can order those everywhere.

>> No.53435067

Not to mention that non-backlit CM Storm boards use the same OEM as Filco. Great for starting out and if things get serious it's easy to swap out the keycaps and have a pretty good keyboard.
