which switches should i get if i just want a keyboard for coding? Someone said blues but they are waaaay too loud. Is the tactile bump really that important?

>> No.53393242

Clears might fit you. They have decent tactility, make less noise but also require slightly more force (rarely a problem).
You could also go with babby's first switch, browns, which are the lighter and slightly worse version of clears.

If you're not afraid of spending some serious money for some small improvement there's also Topre, the best silently tactile switch on the market. But it's hard to recommend for a first board.

>> No.53393280

ahh now I am seeing on the chart above that medium and stiff are for "heavy typists". That seems a bit counter intuitive to me because wouldn't your fingers get tired from typing faster? I am using scissor switches right now and I feel like I can type a long time because the travel distance and actuation force are so small. I've have a mushy keyboard before and that shit sucked.

I bought a Quickfire TK with blues recently and I adore it but it's too loud for vidya if I'm using a mic. Razer do one with 20 keys with their own brand mechanical switches that are apparently very quiet, does anyone have experience with these?

I like it graphically and as a reference chart, but you should add a note that tells people to get a switch tester.

>> No.53393349

Scissor switches usually require around 65g of force, more than clears, but over a shorter distance.
You can just try any mechanical keyboard you have around (or check retail store displays), find it on the chart and decide if you want more or less force.

Version 2 with disclaimer and some slight additions.

>> No.53394157

Nice, though I'd mention that browns have the weakest tactile bump of all and feel like dirty linears

>> No.53394900

never had browns, didn't know that. how bad is it?

>> No.53395065

linears and tactiles sound, imo, exactly the same

>> No.53395432

Browns aren't inherently bad, it's just that they suck compared to any other cherry switch. They're far less tactile than any of the other tactile cherries and feel almost closer to linears but still have that minor bump in the keystroke. Thus they're often referred to as dirty linears.

I actually really like this graphic, but here's some minor changes I'd make:

1. I wouldn't make categories such as noise level and tactile bump since those aspects are both quite arbitrary aspects, especially the noise level which varies not only with the switch but also with the keyboard and the keycaps. Instead of defining a noise level and level of tactility, I'd just categorize them by linear, tactile and tactile+clicky and add a disclaimer to the browns, mentioning that they have the weakest tactile bump of all. Also make sure to add a disclaimer to the white one noting that it has a softer, less loud click than the blue and the green.

I'd also do away with the tactility category on the left hand side column. I have yet to see some kind of proper definition for tactility and I'd say that clears and greens are equally tactile, but in a different way (clears have a more drawn out tactile bump while greens have a more short and snappy one). In that sense, the snappiness category is fine by me.

>> No.53395452
File: 2.15 MB, 4592x3448, P1060051.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

I'd also add mention of the fact that switches are entirely matter of preference and that there is no switch which is inherently better for typing or for gaming.

Furthermore I'd remove the mention of "less typing fatigue" (the "for light or normal typists" part is fine) since it makes it seem as if one type of switch were inherently more ergonomic than others (this is subject to debate, but typing fatigue is entirely a matter of your finger strength. I wrote an entire paper on a board with clears and never had any issues with finger fatigue).
On that note, I'd mention that clears bottom out at 100g since this is quite a defining quality of clears.

I haven't had any hands-on experience with grays of either category, so I can't add anything to that.

That being said, I feel like I can't mention enough how much I like the design of this graph. Are you a graphic designer or something by trade?

Magic Keyboard 2 is seriously the best 60% I've ever used. It feels really great to type or game on for extended periods and it doesn't fuck with my wrists at all. I really wish the bluetooth LE functionality could be extended to yosemite and the windows platform.

Max height is 0.43 inches, which is less than a third of the HHP2 (1.6 inches)

It quite literally weights half a pound and has this sexy aluminum body. HHP2 is 1.1 pounds.

The travel time is much shorter than their previous iteration and it only costs $100. If you care at all about keyboards you should at least visit the apple store and try it out.

I used that keyboard for a long time before discovering mechs (with a steelseries rubber dome that died within 36 of delivery (luckily so, was a piece of shit) in between). I wholly agree that it's one of the best non-mech keyboards out there, especially the full aluminum body is very nice. It feels like absolute shit to type on compared to just about any mech, but for the standards of a non-mech, it's a really good keyboard.

I wish I did.

All you need is a proper camera with which you can modify the exposure time, aperture and iso. I don't know about modern gen phone cameras, but you could probably even take quite decent pictures with those.

The only thing I use is my camera and whatever light source I have at hand, usually either daylight or one of the lamps in my room.

And lots of memes, you definitely need those.

Hell I'd love to see more nice and fun pictures of keyboards around here, by all means please go take some.

Oh wait, I thought you were talking about the caps in the OP.

No idea, but I'd imagine that they're some WASD printed keycaps. It's certainly not dyesubbed nor doubleshot (unless some millionaire went crazy). It's OEM profile and I'm fairly certain I'd have seen this before would it actually exist. So that leaves you with WASD or some kind of new keycap set that nobody is talking about even though this seems like the kind of thing that would generate quite a lot of interest, just for the printing and font itself.

Actually, that's probably a render that was never put into reality. I guess you could get a set that looks like that printed from WASD.

I have a CM Quickfire TK w/ Blues, you did well anon.

CM's Quickfire mech keyboards are rock fucking solid. I play Guitar Hero III using my keyboard instead of a plastic guitar, because it feels that good.

I want to mod Cherry MX Blues into my SG Guitar Hero II controller one day-- the controller itself already uses Apex switches for the strum-bar.

2,3,4,5,6 = G,R,Y,B,O Frets

Up/Down Arrows = Up/Down Strum

Shift = Whammy

Ctrl = Star Power

Hold it like a guitar and rock out.

The reason why I use 2,3,4,5,6, for frets instead of f1,f2,f3,f4,f5 is because of the space between f4 and f5.

Feels awkward to play on the F-keys if you have a keyboard that seperates them into groups of 4.

So you know how the yellow fret (middle fret) on guitar hero controllers has a bump in it? Since I don't have that to keep track of my hand on my keyboard, I use 2,3,4,5,6 instead of 1,2,3,4,5 so that my pinky slides through the empty space between F4 and F5 when I have my hand in the default position (pointer on green, middle finger on red, ring finger on yellow, pinky on blue).

>> No.53402485

In addendum, in my opinion it's much more satisfying to play GHIII with a mechanical keyboard on PC than it is to play with a plastic guitar.

The only issue is the lack of a strum bar mechanism, so it's impossible to hit all of the notes perfectly in one song (being Devil Went Down to Georgia) because you have to use your finger-muscles instead of your wrist/forearm muscles.

Since Guitar Hero controllers use Alps switches in the strum bar mechanism, there must be some way to take a strum-bar from a guitar hero controller and hook it up to a mechanical keyboard's up/down arrows to have the best of both worlds.

I wish I could get over how stupid some consumer electronics look too.
Ah, to be carefree and not care when companies slap on extra crud that looks like it was designed by a 10-year-old.

I too love overpriced, flashy keyboards with made up switches

>> No.53413329

>mechanical switches that aren't cherry are now imaginary
You're a cultist.

>extra keys that you can program however you want
Shouldn't this be what tech interested people want?
>media keys
Oh no, you can pause your music without tabbing to your music player. How careless.

Seriously, some gaming keyboards may look a little silly but this is by far one of the least bad ones.

/g/ents, what do you think about cougar attack 2?

What kind of cherry switches were you using and how many different ones have you tried?

If you answer is browns I'll laugh at you.

>> No.53413454

Reds, and maybe I got unlucky but key chattering started happening and I've had rubber domes last significantly longer than that keyboard. I wasn't buying another cherry board after that.

30-50 bucks or so for a single cap that actually looks good on your keyboard is fine by me (I've been eyeing those clack factory knockoffs just for the sake of messing with people) but I agree that 500 bucks for a skull cap, which one then gets multiple of to disgrace ones keyboard is rather on the stupid side of things.

What keyboard did you get?

QPad mk50.

How do you like the feel of the romer-g switches compared to cherry reds?

I tried them in a store and it felt like I was just hitting rubber. Not like a rubber dome that collapses, just like hitting a squishy, bouncy something.

>> No.53413644

I like them a whole lot more than reds. I'm not sure how to describe it but instantly after getting the G910 the keys just started feeling natural to me again, like keyboards used to before I got the reds. After a few hours I was typing away and it all just felt so good.
Maybe I just want something that's a bit closer to the rubber dome feeling. It is what I've used for that vast majority of my life. I realized after making the switch back that cherry felt too mechanical for me, cold and lifeless. Romer-G feels exactly like keys should to me. A little resistance, then it gives way and doesn't immediately hit the hard plastic of the keyboard underneath but rather is smoother. Also I was getting mechanical keyboard complaints from everyone I ever voice chatted with so the lack of a loud clack is great.
So all in all it's the perfect keyboard for me. I realize reds may have not been the best choice but I don't feel like buying cherry again any time soon, and I won't be needing to either.

Interesting texture. Not sure what's going on with that cable.

I suck at sleeving cables so I wrapped it in paracord. The wrap is tight until about halfway down the cable, so it looks fine on my desk but shitty in the photo.
The texture is plastidip. It's kind of like soft sandpaper, not sure why it turned out like that on this plastic but I like it.
