Don't buy kailh switches, don't buy cheapo backlit kailh gamer boards, don't buy non-standard condensed meme layouts as your first board, you will hate them.
Also read the pastebins and pls stop asking questions we've answered a million times already, especially "what switch should I get??? :("

Can anyone recommend me a good TKL mechanical that uses matias quiet click switches or very similar switches? Never used them before but from what i've read everywhere they sound like what i want. Currently using a Razer mech with the orange switches and i hate them. They feel really mushy and just not what i think a mechanical keyboard should feel like.

Reminder of tactile switch rankings:
Topre > Zealios > Ergoclears > Gateron Browns > ALPS tactiles > clears >>>> kailh browns >>> poop >>>>>> mx browns

>> No.53256795

>Ranked by popularity of personal preference who have tried all of the above
So like, 10 people?

>> No.53256833

Don't need it to be of people who have tried all of those, just assemble it from people who have tried the various types.
Topre is the king of tactile.
Zealios feel a bit smoother than DIY ergoclears, plus you don't have to disassemble a bunch of switches and source springs to do it.
Gateron browns fix the weak tactility of an MX brown without the strong-ass spring of a real clear.
Clears are only that far down due to the spring strength.
Kailh browns are still above MX browns due to feel but have shit QC.
I haven't tried real ALPS or matias tactiles, just some DIY conversions from clicky ALPS, so that one could be argued up or down.

How ingenuous have I been.
That's a shame though - those colors are really cool. I saw a couple of blank sets on pimpmykeyboard, and, since I'm a touchtyper, it could even be acceptable; but in those moments when you have to press some key to pause a video or something, - i won't ever find the right key. Colema wont make it any harder to be honest.

The issue is that the 1.5u modifiers are rare as shit. And the 2.0u vertical keys are non-existant outside of the now out of print ergodox pack.

To fully complete it, you would need:ergodox set x2 planetary set x1 core set x1 and 100% set x1. That is only if you want my layout. Probably missing oneor two packs too.

Alps are by far the most tactile of them all. The only tactile alps that has a small bump is black alps, but appart of that, any cream, orange, salmon or even matias are way more tactile than anything else.

Lubed ergoclears are better than Zealios. They feel as smooth, with significant less wobble.

45g topre is not more tactile than clears / zealios.

Don't worry about the haters. You're in a thread full of keyboard enthusiasts. It's not a bad keyboard. Ducky is a "gamer" brand but one of the better ones.

They are capable of lighting up like a Christmas tree (which really is rather repulsive) but also have more conservative modes.
You get the standard genuine Cherry switches and a standard layout which is nice. If you later want a different look you could easily find keycaps for it and even disable the backlighting for a quite conservative look.

Number pads are the source of endless debate. Without it you can save money, space and have less distance to your mouse. But you also lose those extra keys for applications and games and whatever anyone may say it *is* slower to type numbers with the number row.

Decide what's best for you and don't let other people's close minded views force you.

Shame that the razer keypads are actually dipping quality despite incorporating mechanical switches.

>> No.53261581

Sure, they have some deeply rooted design issues, but it's the baseline level of quality when it comes to mechanical keyboards. People have to start somewhere.

The Pok3r has its issues, mostly with the electronics. But it's hard to find a 60% board for a good price, and clears are one of the better Cherry switches. It's solid, is easy to find keycaps for and has plenty of features that compensate for the lack of some keys.
People here have seen their fair share of them though, so don't expect excitement.

Personally, I'm pretty stoked for the 1976 kit. I'm only spending something like 140 after shipping and taxes for two full keyboards (Planck and 60), and I'm not being forced to buy a full or TKL, I'm able to pick up exactly the kits for the boards I want to populate. Nantucket Selectric is the only kit I can recall that had a cheaper Planck, which was $37 for a sculpted 2-3-4-4. Pretty stoked to get an all r3 kit, finally, though.

It's very possible. I've found a Uni Comp Model M at a flea market and paid three dollars for it. Been awhile since I've looked at it--but It's all plastic with buckling springs. No idea if it's 'rare' though.

I've also bought a IBM Model M from 1986(?) that was in terrible condition and has a bunch of marks in the plastic and what-not that I cleaned and is perfectly functional. Probably my favorite keyboard ever. Paid five dollars for that one.

Just went to a thrift store the other day and bought a Levetron Clicker Mechanical that was absolutely disgusting. I saw it from about 15 feet away and was like.. " That has to be a mechanical board " and sure enough it was. It was covered in years of fucking filth. I took off all the keys and vacuumed/bleached the damn thing. Turns out it has White ALPS switches.

I ended up breaking a slider off in the switch, so I had to repair it. Ended up gutting a keycap and whittling a cocktail toothpick to fit into the ALPS slide. Works like a charm and you'd never know it was bootleg.

Paid 3 dollars for it. Anyone know the true value on it, or what I should do with the thing?

>> No.53268082

Mainly the initial price, it's a fairly large thing for me. The keycap purchase can be delayed so I'm not too concerned with that. But an extra 60-80 over the NovaTouch for the HHKB seems a bit steep at the moment. I'm considering it though.

>> No.53268160

You do need a new keyboard, judging from the lack of capitalisation and punctuation.

Decent enough. Most people with the Pok3r around here seem happy with it. Just don't be under any illusion that you can do anything with the Pn key.

I'd honestly suggest you a HHKB over the Novatouch. You'll eventually be replacing keycaps anyway so the cost will sum up to be almost the same in the end, and the form factor doesn't seem to be a problem for you. That, and the HHKB sounds better (and you get special memeposting privilege).

A friend of mine has a pok3r and is really happy with it, though I've seen some people complain about it here. Clears are my personal favorite when it comes to cherry switches so the pok3r would probably also be quite a good option.
Just be aware that you may want to replace some modifiers with lighter switches if you play games that require to you hold down some keys with your pinky a lot. Really nice switches otherwise, though pretty much the polar opposite of Topre, as far as one can even make such a comparison.

Pic related, Ducky Shine 4 with Clears. I'd probably cycle between that and my HHKB if it weren't for the fact that it's a full size.

Prepare to invest a whole day in taking them apart.
But you want to start by blowing the housing out with some air, then take the sliders leafs out and wipe them down with some Isopropyl alcohol (not a whole lot, just enough to get any shit off of them)
Then you only need a tiny bit of lube (I used the stuff WASD sells) on all sides of the sliders.
And I mean a TINY amount, like just enough to wet the surface a little bit. Apply with a small paintbrush.
I stress a tiny amount because the problem might just be dirty and alps should not need much after being cleaned right.

I've used the romer g switches on the logitech g810 keyboard; basically, they're linear and slightly scratchy/grindy with no tactile feeling.

They're short in travel distance and the only benefit I noticed for these romer g switches is that their actuation point is on the tip top of the key which makes them ideal for gaming, but for general typists, they're just bland and unremarkable. The only pros I saw from the g810 was the colorful led display thanks to the centralized light source from the middle of the romer g switch and the keyboard has a more neutral look compared to the godawful g910. The keycaps were also normalish other than the fact they felt slightly rubbery and smooth at the same time.

Only bought the keyboard to try something new and get the Division game, but I just couldn't force myself to like the switches however. Just my two cents.

http://www.leopold.co.kr/ doesn't seem to have any english translation, and their 'webmaster' whose e-mail adress was the only readable thing there is not responding.

Hey /g/ I recently bought a new razer blackwidow chroma TKL

can the switches on these things be replaced for cherry mx switches (i.e. lubricated ergo clears) or would they be incompatible?

A custom that I'm currently working on (aka, on hiatus until spring when I'll have time to redo the wiring and make a case).

It used to an old apple extended keyboard II with cream alps. You can see my build log here.
