The watch was running about twenty-five seconds slow when I got the thing so I felt it could use the overhaul especially since hi-beat movements can really damage themselves if not properly lubricated.

The overhaul is the standard procedure. The watch will be disassembled and cleaned. Then the watchmaker will reassemble (hopefully I don't need any replacement parts as they are quite hard to find) and lubricate the movement. Finally it will stay a little while longer for regulation.

Its hard to tell from my pictures but the watch has a few cosmetic issues from age. There are a few scratches to buff out on the crystal. The dial has minor corrosion below the six o'clock marker and right next to the eleven o'clock marker. There are quite a few scratches to the case but I am still deciding on whether I want to refinish the watch. The finish on Grand Seikos is pretty unique and I don't want to have someone screw it up. Plus it is a gold cap watch and may have been polished in the past so I don't know how much plating is left on the case.

That's a good choice. Oh and if that glass happens to be acrylic - as a lot of watches from that era are - you might want to pick up a little tube of Polywatch and give it a polish. You can get really good results with that stuff.

Mechanical? A Seiko 5, SKX007, or anything from Orient that can be acquired for around that price like the Mako, Bambino, Union, etc.

How do you like the steinhart? I am on the fence between one of their subs or just going with the squale, which has a nicer size case and lugs in my opinion.

>> No.45983275

>>45983069
I literally just got it today and am wearing it at work tonight. So far I really like it, its exactly what I expected. The lugs are quite flat so if you've got some skinny wrists you might not enjoy it too much. The crystal is fantastic, the bezel action is the best I've felt thus far, and it sits quite nicely on my flat wrist. The crown screws in smoother than anything else I've used as well and winding is smooth as well. I'm not sure about their in house movements, they're still using ETA 2824-2 movements for a large chunk of their line, the OVM line included. This one was from one of the last runs with the black dial, they've moved to a gray dial now for a more vintage look. The fit and finish of the case is great though and its really comfortable.

So quartz watches have a piece of quartz which vibrates at 2^15 Hz. That vibration signal is divided by 2 15 times to reach the 1 Hz signal which drives the watch. Why not just divide fewer times and have the watch beat at 8 or 16 Hz or something to give it a smooth sweep like mechanical watches have? Why are smooth-sweeping quartz movements so rare and expensive?

I'll admit that I have only a rudimetary understanding of quartz watches, is there something I'm missing?

I don't really know much about co-axial escapements, what is it meant for then? Every watch has an escapement no matter how much other bullshit or how many chrograph dials or whatever it has, so why wouldn't any watch benefit from it?

Yes it does. Compare pictures and you'll notice a few differences between them like, for example, in yours the chronograph levers aren't anglaged, only vertical polished, etc...
That's manly why my version (the moonface watch) is charged by Omega for about 1k more expensive than any other current produced steel only Speedmaster.

I ment that George Daniel didn't want to change the movement inside a Speedy. HE liked that way and that's why he refused to developp another caliber gor Omega. Different gent than the one you replied to, but that's pretty neat. Always wondered why they hadn't updated the Speedy Pro to a co-axial movement. Granted, it makes sense if the entire line uses nearly the same movement throughout the years, probably means lower costs to service and replace parts because they're widely known and there's an abundance of replacement parts and movements.

It's a shame that nobody else besides Omega got into designing co-axial based movements. A more efficient escapement seems to be a no brainer to me.

That's not entirely true. George Daniels developped co-axial technology with Omega and therefore Omega holds the patent fo now. However, Omega is owned by Swatch Group and they have used the co-axial here and there, experimenting a bit. For example, Vincent Calabresse adapted the co-axial to a very small production of his Tourbillon-Carrusel movement made for Blancpain, also owned by Swatch Group.

Neither PP, Richemont Groupd or HTLVM will use it. For now at least.

Sapphire at the affordable price segment is hard to find. Crystal material shouldn't be a deciding factor in a watch, either.

So are the watches bad or not?

There really aren't that many mention-worthy watches at the absolute cheapest price bracket so no wonder they're similar, while at 200-300 there are starting to be so many that a guide can't cover all.
That said if you're gonna get cheap-ass quartz you could just walk into any place that sells them and pick there.

Still, there are some oddities in the guide imo.

it's a hard choice to make. newman is waterproof but has potential crown stripping issues, 1963 has chinky design which some people don't like but some people don't like the unoriginal design of the paul newman.

Hi m8. Thanks for the extra pictures. Truly interested anon here.

As I said momments ago, you should puy a grey strap on it, but also remember that the most important thing to do now is to have it serviced BEFORE you actually start using it, in order to prevent any possible damage.

Also, you can try with a paste intended to polish the glass, or you can have it changed for a new one for better looks. Just don't let anyone change the dial or hands, as it s prefered to keep the originals.

If you want more info about the model you need a watchmaker to open it so you can check all the marks on the caseback and caliber.

Finding a piece with family heritage is awesome. I'm happy for you m8. Let me share with you a pic of one of my watches. ;-)
