Reviews are out:

>> No.21774874

I shall wait for the Phoronix Linux review before considering buying this - if the AMD open-source drivers have caught up with Catalyst, I will buy it, if not then I'm sticking with Nvidia cards under Nouveau.

23% better than 6970, 8% better than the 580.

Honestly, I was hoping for better, but I guess this is not bad. At least the price is somewhat reasonable for the performance.

>How finished is nvidia?
The number of people buying the 7970 will be equal to the number of people buying the 580.

So... nVidia is not finished at all. $550 cards are not exactly what makes or breaks a company.

Though the performance is admirable.

Anyone else really disappointed in this card? It is $550 and is barely better than a last gen card in some tests while outright losing in a lot of benchmraks.

Pricing is all wrong. It's as if AMD is trying to justify the price of the 580, which is clearly priced wrong to begin with. It's making dual-gpu cards seem reasonably priced.

I am neutral. For $550, there is no way I am going to recommend the 7970. Sure, it wins over the 580 in everything... but I did not recommend the 580 either.

But there is a silver lining: If nVidia lowers the 580 price significantly, that would be awesome.

Gentlemen, a concluding statement.
The 7970 has a power about similar to the GTX 580, at a similar price point.
At a time of newer raping games such as Battlefield 3, which are both very fun, but bring your graphics card down to your knees, we must settle for the best, at the lowest price.
I think it is safe to say the 7970 is a failure. It fails to run BF3 at 60 FPS on 1200P, and therefore, at $550, fails. The 28nm die was not successfully finalized, and we must hope for the best around Radeon 8000.

Hopefully, NVIDIA or AMD spend enough time to fix 28nm, and lower prices or yields. However, 7950 is like the 6950, and is mid $300, and can be unlocked to a 7970. However, this is very doubtful.

It's not due to lack of R&D, I just believe that to get good compute performance you need to have a complex setup, which should mean you end up with less overall shaders, meaning lower gaming performance. As nvidia has been pursuing compute for the longest, it would explain why nvidia cards are always power hungry and low performing for gaming, while being huge, when compared to the strictly-gaming amd cards.

>quite a bit faster
Not it is not. 560 Ti ~= 6950. The 6950 would be 2%-3% faster on average, which translates to 1-2 FPS difference, something that is not humanly noticeable.

6950 is a great card, but anon getting a 560 Ti for $210 would be better performance/price than 6950 for $240.

In the same way that OpenGL is good - nobody uses it.
It's not all about cuda, either. It's just about having specific software for the architecture. amd is welcome to have their own, too, I just don't see opencl being an efficient way of doing anything unless someone plans to keep their code and transfer it between supercomputers - which is pretty why

Only partially. Cuda must be run on either processors (x86, arm) or nvidia cards. That's the smart thing that they did. They were seemingly nice in that they have enabled other hardware to use cuda code, but the reality is that they have only enabled cpus to use it for testing purposes. But both AMD & Nvidia have already had GPGPU-application appropriate products available for a long time: Namely the FirePro & Quadro lines

Why do they feel the need to shoehorn all of this extra useless hardware into consumer gaming cards eating up valuable die and PCB space that could been put to better use adding more texture units, shaders, ROPs, etc..

Especially when there is currently no marketable application base worth a cuss to take advantage of GPGPU hardware, and hasn't been one for years. Consumers are effectively being forced to pay for a percentage of the cards that they'll never be able to see any benefit from.

I thought the same thing about Sandy Bridge. What possessed Intel to devote I think it was ~30% of the 2500K's die to the IGPU when they knew that the 90+% of the people buying a 200$ unlocked processor are going to be using a discrete GPU that trumps all integrated options anyway?

It is regrettable that people are still ignoring their freedom when choosing which graphics card they should use.
The vast majority graphics cards these days use non-free firmware, but one should always double-check on h-node.com to find out whether or not it is proprietary firmware. Proprietary firmware is one of the most worrying parts of the use and expansion of non-free software: I have purchased a graphics card, but now I must also install proprietary drivers, or even switch to a non-free operating system just to use it? This violate my freedom, and I will not support any graphics cards that have such drivers. ATI is the enemy of freedom, and I think that none of them run without some non-free firmware. For nVidia, it depends on the model.

>> No.21780790

Because for BF3 and CivV respectively, both studios implemented Direct Command Lists (DCLs) specifically for Nvidia cards because the hardware supported it. This allowed for a significant performance increase over the 6xxx series for the gtx 580.

Thus, the 7970 outperforming the 580 and 570 is simply a merit of brute force.

If the 7xxx had hardware level support for DCLs, you'd see something along the lines of 15-20% performance boost rather than 3-5%

>> No.21780823

Also keep in mind that the 7970 is basically AMD's version of the gtx580.

Its 2048 shaders are a total of 32 CUs with 16 ALUs each; making it a grand total of a 512 "core" chip. Which if you remember, is what the 580 is in terms of "cores" with CUDA.

Therefore, when the 7xx series comes out. The 780 will arguably have around 768 "cores" and thus will smash the 7xxx series in performance.

But until that happens, and that will happen around Q2 2012; Nvidia's in for a rough ride as one anon mentioned before.
