Guys I have some sort of desire to have programming as a hobby. Mainly because I don't want to be obsolete when the robots show up, but also to have the skills to potentially create a website / program if I ever saw some need to.

I'm not here to ask about languages or where to begin, because I already have that planned. I want to ask about what sort of programmes you created when learning? And what sort of things do you make in your spare time?

I have some of my own very basic ideas but these are mainly to test myself rather than what will sustain my enthusiasm for a long time e.g. generic android platformer game, basic website with a "Who said this quote" quiz.

It doesn't help for motivation that a lot of GitHub stuff is made for people who are already enthusiastic about programming.
