Yeah, there's a huge overlap imo. I hate when people criticise techwear for being unrealistic and wannabe futuristic, meanwhile they wear 50s inspired workwear fits to college and office jobs. I like techwear because it represents and matches our time and culture more than most styles.

I think that's pretty damn narrow way to look at techwear. Techwear /= monochrome waterproof ninja outifts, I consider plenty of hiking and other /out/ brands to be techwear since they are clothing with focus on functionality and protecting you from weather.

Why does this style need to justify itself when everyone else can walk around in their workwear/dadcore/preppy/streetwear fits without question? Even though most people here aren't dads, labourers, Ivy League or rappers?

I think we just need to start embracing 'techninja' as a label, even if it sounds ridiculous, so the function police can stop getting butthurt every time we post inspo that's not full goretex.

Also, the assumption that if you're wearing one piece of waterproof clothing, then the whole fit needs to be waterproof is stupid. For a lot of people, a waterproof jacket feels adequate.

Leggings could make perfect sense if it's not super cold. If you're active, even just hiking, you need to vent heat, and a Gore-Tex jacket without pit zips isn't going to do a great job of that.

Anyway, this is all immaterial, because if anyone had bothered doing a wee bit of research instead of mouthing off, simple GIS would've brought you this:

>Our final stop that rainy Saturday before returning to Seattle was an impromptu hike to Franklin Falls. As the hike was unplanned, we were completely unprepared for the snow; never before had I wished for snowshoes so profoundly and never before had eight miles been so far.

http://www.keithtio.com/franklin-falls/

So, like, it's just a sick fit someone involved felt the need to kvetch about later and so doesn't need you to do it for them.

And guys, can we just stop engaging with the "that's not techwear" shit? It's not worth it. It derails threads and brings the level of thinking down to theirs, which is barely thinking at all. It's the same rubric-based habit of thought as a dull and eager to please wannabe-gunner in high school or a freshman comp class. Think about the rules, not the subject. And when a peer passes over a paper that actually searches out into the world he smothers it in red wax.

>>8944002
>trendwhores

Though I will say to this: why are you even thinking about those people? You're not doing large scale sociology or cultural theory, you're not in the industry, you're just a singular person trying to get dressed. What do they have to do with you? I can promise you I don't think about them, or you, when I'm putting on clothes.

*Who thinks about

And, this goes to everyone, if you want to see something different ITT or anywhere, contribute! We probably want to see *your* inspo, and anyway people have even asked for it ITT. Why do you think I always put a ton of effort into techwear threads? It's not just Internet addiction, or the satisfactions of casual research and thinking and words, or the debatably altruistic satisfactions of being helpful. It's because I figured out a long time ago that you have to create the kind of cultural space you want, that you reap just what you sow. In everything.

Lou Reed is techwear, guys!

>>8944100
I think some etymology will actually help clear things up some.

First, the defenders of this stuff as "aesthetic" are so much more deeply right than just being right about liking stuff because of how it looks being valid. The origin of "aesthetic" is in the Greek "αἰσθάνομαι," to perceive, sense, feel. And that's what clothes are about, the experience of wearing them, how it feels (in every way, emotionally, social/ietaly, physically) to wear them.

Second, look at "tech-" itself. It's actually sort of mindblowing - it comes from Proto-Indo-European "teks-", the craft of weaving and fabricating, the same place we get "textile" and "texture." When it got down to Greek, it meant skill and craft more broadly.

So what we end up with in "techwear" is either clothing woven with skill (lol) or clothing having to do with skill, as the style or aesthetic/experience of clothing having to do with skill.

The schism here, I think, is in what relationship people want their clothes to have with skill; more specifically, where they see the skill as being located.

Me, and I think most of the people drawn to these threads? We see the skill as being located in persons, in ourselves, in what we do in the clothes. Techwear is clothing for/that enables/that stays out of the way of the exercise of skill, the experience of having skill: in movement, in living, in doing and accomplishing and play and work. The relationship we want is a harmonization, between our desires and striving and having a body and our garments.

The that's-not-techwear crowd wants to locate the skill in the clothing itself. The relationship they want is an additive one: they want their garments to give them skills they don't have.

You could say they have a better claim on the word (because of the original connection of teks- with weaving), but that's completely disconnected from usage. The only skill commercially available clothes (unless is someone selling exoskeletons yet?) can give you is weather resistance, in the form of shells and insulators, which explains why that supremely boring and not-often-necessary quality is the only damn thing they ever want to talk about.

And besides, fuck it, we were here first, we outnumber them, etc. etc. I don't see the need for it to be that adversarial, or adversarial *at all*, but they're the ones always on the attack and making this out to be a zero sum game over space in a very tiny tent.

You miss the point utterly, as usual. Etymology is useless. Stop thinking it means anything. An aesthetic is a worldview; a set of principles (typically as described after the fact) for solving a particular artistic problem.

The inspiration that gets dumped in huge indiscriminate piles is not describing an aesthetic. It's a style. It's taking the output of that aesthetic, distilling it down into a few common visual elements, and ignoring any of the thinking that went into that visual design. The end result is repetitive, boring, and reductive.

It's exactly the same as the "I want to look like a punk" threads we have. Why would you want to do that, if you're not a punk? There's a very specific language, both visual and subtextual, underlying any distinctly cultural dress, and then you get kids who just want to copy it so they can look cool.

It's not about appropriation, per se. It's about destroying meaning in the pursuit of the next cheap thrill. And of prep, workwear, streetwear? A half-assed prep, copied from modelled photos, looks silly. Workwear, at its best, was an actual appreciation of craft and labor, from people who wanted to learn a trade instead of getting a CS degree like their peers. Streetwear? What the hell does streetwear even mean anymore?

The point is, here is a movement of designers and others that was almost entirely non-visual in its dialogue. It's about functionality, technology, pushing boundaries. It's about blank slates and drastic reinterpretations. It's not about specific silhouette or color scheme or brands or cargo pockets or having a strap on your jacket. Dumping 150 pics of the same stuff with the only discussion being where to buy certain pieces is boring. Caring exclusively about superficial elements will make you a boring person.

I'll also respond to this, but... seriously, you thought I was talking visuals in the sense of silhouette and everything? I guess I was even sloppier than I thought.

Also, I wasn't the guy talking about appropriation, prep, workwear, etc. Appropriation isn't something I think about except when I have to when it collides with some structural oppression one can't ignore.

I think there is enough room for everyone in these threads, I mean I'm more of a actual functional tech guy since that's my perspective and take on it and how I apply 'techwear' to my wardrobe but ain't nothing wrong with someone posting leggings meant for running in these threads, as far as I'm concerned any type of /out/ clothing with focus on functionality is techwear, it can be a cotton flannel shirt with cargo pants and leather boots or leggings with nike running shoes. Same idea, just different application.
That being said, I would love to see more inspo that focuses on /out/ activities and function rather the ninja-aesthetic and monochrome fits.

I wouldn't diss any of the fits ITT if only it was called 'urban ninja thread' or something along these lines

but since it's called techwear I assume that function should be placed before look, yet look should still be still very important. Not the other way.

ergo - Trying to be tech with hi-tech-parka and generic sneakers when it rains is a no no. It doesn't matter how smart the fit looks, and I admit some of them look brilliant.

I would, too. My own style takes from both of those, as well as a bunch of other stuff. I haven't found a better way to describe it than the cheeky-but-earnest pic related I made for "describe your style in two words" thread. Hyphen-core.

>>8946280
>generic sneakers

We're not talking Supergas here, although I'd even admit a fit with those if everything else read right. We're talking Nikes, the most advanced, highly engineered athletic footwear on the planet.

Both before and beyond the philosophical stuff I'll cover when I'm not running on fumes, that's the problem with the "it's not tech!" line. It's usually just flat out not correct about something not being technical or functional.

And, like,

>when it rains

But it's not always raining! And even when it is, who decided/why do you feel that weather resistance is the summit or sole, um, barometer of all function? It seems the least important unless you're on a multi-day innawoods trip. Which, by all means, I love mutli-day innawoods trips, but we're not discussing them here.

TBH, it seems like weather resistance and exoticness are the two things stuff is being measured against, and nothing else. That's the only way I can see someone not counting *Nikes*. (Also, note I'm not saying you have to like Nikes, there's plenty of sound reasons you might not, starting with the branding, but I can't see a sound argument to not consider them techncial.)

Finally,

>> No.8946359

I had some in tan a long time ago and they were shit. Got rained on after a week or two of wear and the leather began to get crusty dry even after leather oils.
The soles had shitty grip on wet concrete, but surprisingly good in mud.
Not amazing, definitely not good for the price either.

>some of them look brilliant

We're doing inspo here. A collective mood board. It doesn't have to be literal. Something looks brilliant? Be *inspired* by it and learn from it how to do something similar in whatever textile you like.

Take Outlier - when they set out to create their deliberately unobjectionable softshell pants, I'm sure their moodboard was filled with Epaulet and similar stuff, not Cloudveil or Mammut.

I'm going to post a few quick selects pulled off Patagonia's Tumblr and then I'm out, sadly not /out/.

>Cumberland island National Seashore

You'll note here this woman is wearing what seems to be denim shorts and a flannel shirt that's probably cotton. Obviously not ideal, obviously she's managing more than fine, and obviously you could easily replace them with Dryskin shorts from Outlier or other softshell pants with cargo pockets from any /out/ brand, and a wool flannel from Filson, Pendleton, or Woolrich.

In what way is that not a proper softshell?

The only thing I'd wish different is Napoleon pockets and the weight being a little heavier, but I'll take the pants they did with the same fabric being 200gsm for the jacket being a little light, and you know Outlier always runs the same fabric across everything.

You don't necessarily don't even have to cover your neck at all before it gets really fucking cold as long as your chest is all nice and warm. Also good idea to always have dry feet.
