Enough DickOvens threads.

How did you approach your chosen aesthetic?
How did you find out about the brands you are interested in?
How do you go about deciding which clothes you will buy this year?

Also any recs on how to improve my taste and eye for fashion? I don't want to make lame cops plus I think I'm too pleb to appreciate the good stuff. My eyes just kinda glaze over it unless it's something really dope

C'mon /fa/, why do you hate good content?

1.

>Wow I really like this, going to try to copy it
>Doesn't work
>Wasting money
>Finally get it down and starting to switch it up a bit / mixing it with other things I like
>Best feeling ever, you feel at peace with yourself

2.

>Just exposed myself to alot of pictures of clothing, Tumblr was decent for various exposure to different brands. I found out about my favourites through seeing some pics and thinking it looked interesting / similar to what I've always kind of liked, then just researched like a crazy fucker

3.

>I don't really think of it as "I will buy X Y and Z this year" but that has alot to do with my philosophy / my favourite designers' philosophies on fashion. I keep it simple, Quality > Quantity. I have my basics and look at new collections during fashion week, and choose some pieces I want to save up for.

4.

>Just look at a shitload of clothes and if you really like something, research it alot as chances are you will discover a universe of similar shit you like. You will narrow it down to something naturally.

Also lame cops are essential stepping stones to mastering your own style. Do you think well dressed people woke up one day and just started making all the right cops and put them together in the best possible combinations? No. Look at Shui Tsang's fits a few years ago, they are terrible but now they are god tier. You only learn from mistakes.

First I was just trying to look better, so I copied what I saw on some popular guy. He was a pleb though. Then I got more into menswear by going through HM, Zara and Hipster stuff. At this point I decided to go on /fa/ and laughed about all the bad fits there were. Later on I realized I'm not any better and with passing time I looked for more expensive stuff. Eventually I stayed with menswear but in black and cream colour with a very minimalistic approach.
>
In the beginning I found new brands by going through stores I often went to, then it was the brands that /fa/ mentioned and just going through every item on SSense, Hypebeast, Oki-ni...
>
I always check the sites of my favourite brands. Then I bookmark every piece I like and look at it almost everyday. Most of the times I decide that I don't really want it and delete it after some time . Then I go look for the remaing pieces in my To Buy List IRL to see what the garment feels like and it's fit. If it still pleases me I buy.

For the first few months, which was more like a year, i really was trying to be something i dont think i was. It took me time to develop my own style, and im pretty confident now going out in whatever i think i will look good in, not what i think other people will think i look good in.

for me i think i get a visual idea of what aesthetic i am going for, just an image of me walking down a street. Does everyone else get something similar or is it more just gut instinct?

its natural evolution and will eventually just fall into place if u put in a seriously effort/interest

but ull have to endure a fuck load of mistakes and bad kops before it happens

>How did you approach your chosen aesthetic?
Without going full sperg? I identified the elements of existing looks/ styles/ garments that I enjoyed, and then tried to find as many ways to incorperate those elements into what I wear. That's a lot easier said than done, and is only really doable when you expose yourself to a lot of (different, and often contrasting) clothes. Everyone goes through little spurts of discovery, but you go through a lot of them when you're "new." I think that's what makes or breaks personal style - the people who have a really developed, robust style are the ones who were best able to take everything they could out of those formative experiences.
>How did you find out about the brands you are interested in?
The internet. Seriously it's a great tool for developing brand awareness and has a sort of rabbithole effect (especially in the endless reblogging of #menswear, but it's just as evident in wikiloops) where as soon as you find one thing/ brand you really like you'll also find a bunch of other paths leading to more things you'll probably also like. The only downside to this is I think it lends itself to a kind of tunnel vision where, if you're not careful, you'll end up falling into one "camp" or another and only expand your knowledge within that circle. I think that's a diservice to yourself.
>How do you go about deciding which clothes you will buy this year?
I didn't. If I want something, and I can afford it, I buy it. Occationally this means I've missed out of some great cops, but I don't regret any of my purchases.

>Also any recs on how to improve my taste and eye for fashion?
Exposure.
>I don't want to make lame cops
It's going to happen. Developing a style of your own depends on it; it's a little like growing up again, only in really fast forward motion.
>plus I think I'm too pleb to appreciate the good stuff. My eyes just kinda glaze over it unless it's something really dope
Again, exposure. Comment too long?!

Before I was a basic guy, a little menswear-ish, shirts, chinos, raws. Learning about "clothing rules"

Then I saw the lack of black in my wardrobe, I discovered Yohji at that time but I'm a student so no Yohji. Instead I had monochrome fits, pretty basic but not gothninja. The clothes I always reached to were woolen, comfy stuff, cardigans, jackets, straight-slim pants and a lot of blue and grey. When I discovered Trove, it was exactly what I was aiming for.

My current aesthetic is a mix of fisherman/sailor style and comfycore. Breton stripes, wool cardigans, waterproof coats etc..
Pic related though I don't wear crochet.

>How did you approach your chosen aesthetic?

Natural evolution, bought stuff, if it didn't work I got rid of it, if it did work i kept it. Fast forward 7 years i have a wardrobe full of stuff that works. Also I am still learning and growing, I don't think you ever stop, and I'm sort of just getting satisfied with my little details game now.

>How did you find out about the brands you are interested in?

Internet, get exposed to something, if it catches my interest do some research, if I like what I see do more research, eventually buy something, if I really like it, buy more.

>How do you go about deciding which clothes you will buy this year?

The way I've always decided any purchase is figuring out how much money I have and then how much something is going to cost and if there's anything else I'd rather have. Priorities.

>Also any recs on how to improve my taste and eye for fashion?

Consume everything, you gotta be voracious. Take in as much as you can and your brain will filter the rest. If something's important your brain will remember it. Do this long enough and your brain will be full of stuff worth remembering.

>I don't want to make lame cops

This is inevitable, just try not to think about it. Buy stuff you genuinely like. Yes the reality is one day you're going to look back and realize it sucked but that's life.

>plus I think I'm too pleb to appreciate the good stuff

I doubt this is the case, clothing on the internet is mad over hyped. There's very few cases where I can actually think someone would be too pleb to appreciate something nice.

>My eyes just kinda glaze over it unless it's something really dope

That's normal.

I still don't have a style I particularly like. I haven't been interested in fashion for very long, since I've only recently got a job that I can support my tastes with, but I dress nicely, I guess.

My wardrobe is mostly gentle blues, greys, dark turquoise, with some burgundy things.

As for finding out what you like, just observe what you see in public, or on youtube. I usually just decide what I DON'T like by looking at people in public. Fits, color combinations, shapes, lines and are all things I pay attention to. I'm not even a /fa/ enthusiast, but trends play into my opinions, especially when I see people looking like tryhards.

Going off what >>7751897 said, don't be afraid to pick pieces out of different styles and throw them into what you wear. If something just strikes you as something you want, buy it, or fuck, buy a knockoff, just to see if you like it. Your're contributing to the evolution of style, and in reality, most looks these days are just combinations of other looks.

Don't be afraid of knockoffs, especially if you're starting out. Go to thrift stores and just buy weird shit, if you're really clueless.

Chose it based on the region I live in, its heritage, my own personal heritage and how I identify with those aspects of my life.
Its funny, my style is now even shifting as I toy in my mind with which socio economic strata I plan to belong to.

Most brands Im interested in and wear came about in discussions and recommendations (online and irl) rather than just sifting through a shitonne of catalogues.

Obviously you gotta get a grasp of aesthetic (shit you can learn with infographs), then just keep an open mind and try to pick up on nuances of quality and design.

>> No.7753656

>>7751716

I don't think I one day woke up and decided to like what I like. One thing I discovered led to another and it's just slowly built over the years. I used to love everything long and lean and though I still do, I've found that I like contrast and I like ease.

Most of the brands I've discovered I've found in stores or heard about through a friend or a retailer friend showed it to me or a sales agent brought it to my attention. I'd say it's about 50-50 things that I seek out and things that fall into my lap.

My usual process, at this point, is to ask whether it feels new and whether it feels like me. I can find tons of things that are the former or the latter, but something that meets both criteria is a bit rarer. A lot of it also has to do with hand and make and finish, too.

As far as how to develop taste, I've written about it once (>>7749306) and have never found myself wanting to expound on it any more than I already have.

The majority of the clothing I own are from others or from stores like that, and they're all weird-branded and are untraceable.

I really don't buy myself stuff that often because I don't really care about money...
I buy what will fit other things I have or what others will like, or what is cheap.

You can be shocked what you can do with a nice fit, regardless of the price.
Match stuff and pick things that are good colors and pair them. There's not much to it.

>How did you approach your chosen aesthetic?

I got lucky on this one I guess.
I've always romanticized the outdoors so I like the idea of looking like some whimsical protagonist of the forest. Grew up on the edge of a really gorgeous state park so I'm not too far off the mark.

>How did you find out about the brands you are interested in?

Typically from discussion on various fashion forums or reverse image searching inspo fodder that resonates with my taste on a personal level. I began my Trove spamming when I reverse image searched a look from AW11 and loved every other collection I found by the label. My financial priorities are elsewhere so I've been trying to expose people to the brand in the same way I was exposed to it so that I can still support my favorite label without making inconvenient lifestyle changes

in this thread alone I can see two pics likely sourced from my fashion folder
feels proud man

>How do you go about deciding which clothes you will buy this year?

this was how I've done it until a few months ago at least

after a long time of making a lot of mistakes. started out a few yrs ago in miserable dadcore, cdb's, ocbd's, thrifted blazers, the whole works. Then i realized how fucking stupid i looked as a college student goin for biz casual and i kinda gave up on fashion. went back to full redneckcore. camo jackers i bought from walmart, wrangler jeans, wolverine steel toed boots. Tried to evolve that into a more streetwear look as summer approached, got into goofninja, bought a bunch of designer pieces which are more or less ridiculous looking on me. now i don't know who i am. i guess some variation on the monochrome /fa/ uniform. it works for me and i don't make nearly as many mistakes as i did when i was young and excited about fashion

Good thread OP!

I started coming here a long time ago since I wanted girls to like me and I thought "Hey, if i dress nice and get buff then girls will like me!" (I know better now), but thats what got me here

I remember seeing some designer fashion on here, even though it was a lot less prominent than it is today, and thinking how dumb that was and that I could never wear that out of the house. I learned all the "rules", copped some cheap basics, and was set; or so I thought.

I don't remember when I started taking designer fashion more seriously, but I did and just started saving all the stuff I liked. Building a folder of fashion pics and such is really, really helpful btw.

For developing your style it is a mix between just wearing all the shit that you think is cool, and dressing to fit your lifestyle and personality. Like I live in a cold enviroment, so thick clothing and layering is always a part of the game. Long sleeves are always big for me also since I am quite white and you can see my vains in the winter.

Sorry there is so much to say and I am drunk right now so this is really badly written
