a huge majority of the women are just looking for gratification. they read all the messages just to see all the compliments they get.
they may message guys back, but it's just for "fun" really.
the odds of them hooking up someone, let alone you is incredibly low.

as for the girls looking for relationships, you have to seriously wonder why?
they are fucked in the head, and typically won't even let you fuck until after you've jumped through a thousand hoops, paid for a ton of meals, etc.

Some of them are like that, yes, but they are not "a huge majority" as you said. Women who just want attention and compliments online are usually quite easy to spot. They are the type that would have 4000 fb friends and post 50 duckface pics each day.
