6169378 No.6169378 [Reply] [Original]

Lately, I've seen a few discussions surrounding the creation of a 'new' style based largely in retro-futurism, space exploration and the sorts of detailing one finds on EVA suits.
I'm very excited by the promise of something like this, but we're going to need to start somewhere so I've taken the liberty of assembling a mood board.

I'll be going through apparel worn on various space missions, then dipping into flight suits, film costumes and even some SCUBA rigs.

As always, if you have relevant material, please contribute.

I've been thinking about something LIKE this. Okay, bear with me for a few minutes. Remember back to the future? Well you know how the shoes were sticking out because of the very slim pants + their bulkiness? I think this will be the new style. People start wearing really slim/tight sleeves and pants and wearing big gloves and shoes. Think about some influential trends. Obviously, some slim fitting, you see that in the space suit trend. Then you see all these goofninjas talking about looking like anime characters. One influential character who I think already embodies this style? Sora. Notice his shoes and his ridiculous hair. Also, not portrayed well his overly big gloves.

i just want to remind everyone that adding details like that only makes the piece you are wearing seem like a dumb naive copy of the original garment. Remember Thom Browne's attempt at the spacesuit, it looked empty, shallow, because it had very little tech details that were actually useful.

I'm saying that some elements seen on EVA suits and the like are probably out there already on garments that would fit this aesthetic.
Whether the designer knew what the original source for the detail was is irrelevant, we're looking for pre-existing things that could fit this style idea we're toying with.

We're also imagining possibilities, so conjecture is fine too. If I'm being vague it's because I'm still feeling this out.

ultimately it's going to be experimentation but it's not really over layered but the items themselves have lots of intricacy and depth, insofar as you have pockets for everythin and bulking kneepads elbow pads, squared off. I don't think that slim is even necessary initially, maybe the undershirts are slim like a jumpsuit worn under a space suit.
I think the screw on helmet collars will be influential in all openings.

to add: It helps to think about the way a fit would be assembled on a spacegoing or orbital mining platform/research vessel. You're going to have some tactical or utilitarian gear, blended with civvie clothes and maybe corporate issue bomber jackets and the like.

But even that's just one take on the possibilities. It could really go on for a while, especially when you start mimicking EVA suits, Pressure suits and Pressurized High Altitude Garments.

the first and fourth movie have some decent inspo. by being filmed decades apart they both offer a unique look at space/future clothing.

the first perceives space travel as a strictly professional endeavour. some more leisurely outfits thrown in.

the fourth film with the introduction of a pirate like crew is more progressive, dark and utilitarian.
