14554629 No.14554629 [Reply] [Original]

Is there any way for someone to get into high fashion while having a low income? I love Raf Simons' work and vibe. I would love to buy some of his pieces, however I can only afford just one or two second hand pieces at most, and I would also love some quality combat boots (I hate docs). Any tips? Recs? Websites? Don't necessarily need to be about Raf just general stuff for guys on a budget

Yeah I know how to get designer shit more affordably, but the real question is why should I help you? You have nothing to offer me

How entitled are you?

I don't see why you're posting a thread asking for information that has value while providing nothing in exchange

this is pretty interesting, cause is there a way you interact with fashion that doesn’t involve buying things? i wish there was but i don’t have the monetary budget to do only buying things and it seems very...consumeristic to have a hobby that’s just “buying things”

I don't know high fashion very well, but if you're into unique shit and on a tight budget, thrifting+tailoring+modifying can help a lot.

If you want to dress in a particular designer's stuff without money, you're probably fucked, but if you just want to pull off a certain vibe, probably can be done. Again, the key is to know roughly what you want, and keep an eye on thrift stores and cheaper clothing outlets. I find the bigger stores in the poorer neighbourhoods have better stuff because they aren't as constantly picked over by hipsters.

Otherwise I can't help you. Thrifting is what I do, but I adjust my style to be more focused on basics and nice thriftable pieces rather than hyperspecific designer stuff.

No, you live in the woods and make clothes out of leaves and wood.

I'm not saying KEEP buying things, I'm saying that's where you'll get nice pieces for cheaper than retail. or you can learn how to make your own clothes, or get designer friends that have too many clothes and they'll give you some.

>> No.14554724

>>14554708
I'm the same way man. If you study what makes certain pieces nice, whether its quality, shapes, fabric, process etc, you'll be able to discern clothing worth your time and money.

ultra-consumerism come with chasing trends and buying shit clothes that are cheaper to throw away than to mend.

i like this thought, and i guess i’ll look at more runway shows. otherwise i feel like i’m just looking at inspiration pics and wearing clothes, i don’t really see a way to interact with the hobby besides that

would you say there’s any runway shows, designers, seasons that you find particularly inspiring?

This anon gets it.

I've been in this hobby/borderline obsession for close to six years now.

Doesn't help that I live in a "fashion city" either but the two things I've learned is to put money into jackets and boots. You can base an entire outfit with that and consistently wear it.

Raf Simons SS18 runway which was based off of Bladerunner.
Raf Simons FW02 Virginia Creeper .
Undercover's SS06 GuruGuru runway.
Undercover's first show in 2003 for Paris Fashion Week.
Number (N)ine's 2006 Noir and 2005 High Streets have some pretty cool editorials shot for them.
Saint Laurent with Hedi Slimane's shows were all around good, could take a look at those too.
Dior with Hedi Slimane has some cool editorials if you want to dig those up as well.

If you're looking for a way to interact with the hobby that isn't hard on the bank, besides reading and watching suff, again thrifting is a good thing to get into. You interact with a lot of clothes, and have to have to discriminate between good and shit much moreso than with commercial fashion.

You can interact without buying, as well. If you want to be checking out showrooms and seeing how designs were put together, most designer shops really don’t mind you visiting and talking to them about the clothing. They are usually just as interested in fashion.

this is coming from someone in nyc though, so your availability to high end shops may vary.

It's been awhile since I've followed a trend.

I feel like I've done it all from hypebeast wearing Supreme and whatever flavor of the month sneaker was released, moved from that to Hedi Slimane SLP and old Dior seasons, then I came to have an appreciation of Japanese "punk" based brands. As of late I've been collecting UC and mixing it with SLP pieces.

If I had to say a few things if you're just starting out; follow designers and their work whether that be looking at runway or editorials more so over people that can style pieces well. Runways and editorials give a view of what the designer's "fantasy" is.

As well as don't be afraid to test out looks; from personal experience it took a solid 3 years or so before I felt comfortable with where my style and wardrobe was then I proceeded to build off of that.

And most of all, have fun with this. It's a hobby at the end of the day.

yeah i’m right about hitting the three year mark, been into dark stuff in general is what i’m discovering but haven’t specialized yet — getting way more comfortable with making fits though. moving to boston in two weeks, and i have no friends who are into this kinda thing and seems like boston is a little bit dead in that respect too.

Amusingly enough, there's a small community in Boston. There's a shop called Sizerun Supply that Owen Hyatt used to work out of and a UC collector by the name of Riv works there I believe.

Aside from wanting to do some small pop-up store events in NYC and taking advantage of my city for it's "creative" aspects; it's pretty much a hobby that I wouldn't necessarily know how to monetize to its fullest.

I've lived in Manhattan my whole life. Honestly I just happen to go to stores and just chat up employees and random people. That's actually how one of my group chats was created just through people I met.

And funny enough, from just selling on Grailed I have people that follow me that talk to me. What tends to happen is that someone posts a story of a piece I like or something I think is interesting and say something off that.

If you post your IG I'll gladly follow you.

Dover Street Market is phenomenal, everyone knows about it and if you haven't gone. It's great.
IF in SoHo is good as well.

honestly anon buying second hand and saving up for that is probably the best way to go. just allocate a few hours after finishing your work to look on grailed, ebay, and yahoo auctions.

i wasted a lot of money on brand new clothing and i wish i hadn't even if i like the pieces themselves. i should of just waited for someone to sell them.

sorry i can't give any other sites other than the standard shit but im still looking for sites aswell.

grailed, and i've found people online that i've asked to buy pieces from personally and they've given me a price way below anything you could find in online stores. thrifting and learning how to use a sewing machine is one of the greatest skills you can have. can turn a 20$ pair of pants and a 10$ button down into a perfect fit that will last you a long time. fit, confidence, and knowledge are the most important parts of fashion so do your studying now and you can make more informed investments/purchases in the future.
