The symbols aren't particularly cool or aesthetic, and 99% of people getting them have nothing to do with anything Nordic

Essentially you're just tattooing "life" and "death" on yourself, but trying to be special by doing so in a language that you have no connection to.

you know, I get what you're saying. I've felt that way for a long time about Runes. But lately, I've been getting into them and interested in them. Aesthetically, there's ancient cultures I like better (India and Tibet, for example) but here's the thing:

I'm actually very recently of Nordic Descent (Grandmother immigrated from Scandinavia, other parent has Nordic lineage too) and the notion of honoring my body's heritage with symbolic wisdom about my life with Runes is a somewhat appealing idea.

Add to that fact that also it's some of the only strong iconography we have for a Tribal lineage in Huwhite people. It's shows true culture, before corruption and modernization of a group of people that aren't asian, black, or native american. What's wrong with wanting to represent your roots? And isn't that better than having symbols from some *other* culture to which your body's genetics have no immediate connection?

But then again, anyone of British, Irish, Scottish, French, German, Russian, Eastern European descent also probably has a fair amount of Nordic admixture in their genetics as well, as all the peoples either cross bred or were conquered by the Vikings. Not that Anon but I designed a tattoo for my ex. She had multiple spinal surgeries and had her back all sliced up and scarred so it was kind of a spiral vine. After other surgeries years later it was all off kilter. Then after ANOTHER surgery I got a call from the doctor in the middle of the night and all he wanted to talk about was how he lined that tattoo back up. Still makes me laugh. Forget about her collapsed lungs, "I got the tat back together!"
