Make /fa/ /fa/ again.

Discussion of anything (SS17, former runway shows you really liked, showroom collections, etc.) runway related.

Starting off with Christopher Shannon. He has some pretty interesting designs and keeps getting better. Britain's fashion showings are usually pretty shit (barring J.W., Craig Green, and McQueen) but he is definitely someone to look out for.

Fair enough. He had some pretty interesting offerings for FW16. I think the fact that he distances himself from simplifying his outlook to making "streetwear" is why he does well.

agreed. it's moreso coincidental that his work gets lumped under streetwear as his primary aesthetic is inspired by urban youth (aka people who dress in streetwear), particularly british underground music scenes.

his headwear alone deserves discussion. here's one he designed for pugh's ss09 collection. it's great to see talented designers flock together like this

FW12 was incredible, but I think I prefer FW14 a bit more. Definitely put more emphasis on creating incredible forms than a variety of interesting clothing (which he tends to do more in his spring shows anyway). I was floored when I first saw it.

Similar reason why I liked this year's show so much. Great subject matter, and he keeps getting more creative with materials and form as he goes on. Like you said, he's never really had a bad show, and there are incredible ones in there. I really liked FW15 as well, mostly because I also had the chance to see the Met exhibit it was inspired by.

On another note, Issey Miyake was incredible this year. Maybe I'm a basic fuckboy for wanting something that's reverberates so strongly with what his offerings have always been best known for, but it's probably the best Yusuke Takahashi has done at the house so far. Reminds me of the IM Plantation stuff from the 80s that I love so much.

How do you guys feel about Sruli?
I've not had the chance to wear any of his pieces since they're too small for my big nig frame (although I passed up a chance to pick up one of his super long cardigans on grailed, which I somewhat regret), but I think his clothing is very good at combining more traditional and natural materials with really wild cuts to give off sort of an organic-futuristic vibe, sort of like Iceland in general, I guess.

I also quite like how he gives sourcing information for his fabrics as well as the story behind the clothes' inception. Makes it feel much more like art than simple clothes.

I loved Concentrated and wished that it had made it to production. He's a very friendly guy if you talk to him via email. I wore a suit of his (SR526, SR521) to a cousin's wedding earlier this year.

I like his pragmatic approach to construction; the way he designs on a half-size mannequin and scans the pattern to laser-cut full size versions is really clever, and I like his ecologically-conscious production. On the other hand, it's hard to tell how much of the message is tongue-in-cheek. Someone like Rick Owens is pretty frank about his designs and collections but Sruli's descriptions are really floral in ways that don't match the product.

I agree! Margiela this year was stunning, was really nice to see some progress for the house, looking forward to what the rest of the year holds for them.

Also, I've been getting into writing again lately and was thinking of possibly starting a 'designer masterclass' where I spoke on a particular designer maybe every fortnight or so; writing on their progression throughout the years and what they aim to do with fashion. I'll attempt to be unbiased as possible as I'm not trying to write a critique column here.
Would anyone be interested? I think first up I'll be doing Yohji solely because I'm ridiculously familiar with him but I'll definitely be looking at more obscure designers/houses in the future if people are interested enough to bother reading?

Attached pic is from Kenzo SS17. Personally loved this collection, the swathes of muted colours were balanced beautifully with Kenzo's trademark fluros. What'd everyone else think?

Definitely agree. Certain pieces have caught my eye in the past, but I haven't followed the label too closely. Seeing SS17 has made me take another look at the previous seasons and I'm pretty much in love.

On another note, Ann Demeulemeester SS17 is fucking great. A real return to Ann era looks. Sebastien Meunier has really impressed me with this one. Love the embroidery.

This and FW16 women were the first seasons Michele brought other concepts to his revamped image of Gucci. I'm glad he's finally making progress in that regard: After the initial year or so where he seemed like a God for doing what he did, I thought it got very stale very quickly. Hope he follows suit and branches out more in the future.

What is the best place to find photos from older runway shows? Vogue's menswear offerings are pretty shit (only picked up most things within the past half decade if even that) and most other websites are one-offs. Furthermore, most forums that used to have photos up have dead links to a photobucket, flickr, or imgur that no longer exists. Where do you go for early 2000s, 90's, and 80's? Is it doomed to be endless browsing to find incomplete collections?

>> No.11498713

I dunno. I don't think it's fair to just throw around the 'you don't get it' talk. The burden is on you as the poster (assuming you posted those) to expound on what's interesting or influential about the collection. At least post what you like about it.

To me it seems like another uninspired homage to the '90's. The multiple waist thing has been done to death and never really looked cool. The third look you posted is some kind of Helmut Lang on a bad trip.

"You don't like it" and "you don't get it" are different, but I did take that tone a bit.

I think a lot of the design is very clever. It isn't just making things out of denim because hurr trendy: it's taking something and using it to be everything it isn't supposed to be. The pics posted are probably the most palatable looks from the collection, but I think if you look at all 28 of the looks, you find some interesting things at work, especially in the way the clothes can be manipulated and used with each other in different ways.

Hey guys,
Here's a scaffold on what I'm hoping to write for a particular designer each fortnight or so. Anything else that you think I should add / take away?
Completely open to suggestions here as I've never attempted writing in this style before (though I have a large background in scientific writing) so hit me with whatever you'd like me to touch on.

Cheers!

I'm not sure I understand what he's using denim for that he shouldn't be and what that would mean. He's got denim jackets, pants, and shorts. I see that he's putting the hardware and details from one thing onto another, but is there something deeper?

I'm gonna come back to Lang as an example because he was such a master. I can't find a good picture, but I have a pair of tuxedo pants from the AW96 collection that are produced in a nylon tracksuit-like material. Not only is the use of this fabric unconventional for tuxedo pants, but the juxtaposition of the casual fabric and the formal garment is what makes it work. Lang is able to subvert traditional menswear and make it casual enough for the street while also making a dated design cool again in the process.

Anyone can make clothing out of a different material but without a vision, it's just gonna come off as quirky.

Update on the Yohji 101 guide I'm writing, currently about 600 words in and only have just touched on his first collection and introduced who he is (i.e. a brief biography) and what his overlying design philosophies are so this is cruising to be a pretty in-depth read. Hopefully will be finished by tomorrow night really depends on how much time I'm going to have to spend hunting for the last decade or so of runway shows but shouldn't be too hard and I'm having so much fun doing it.
I think I'll publish through wordpress as I'm hoping to make this a regular blog-esque thing. Worth noting that I have no experience with blogging tools so if someone with experience has any better recommendations please let me know!
I will rewrite a condensed version to post onto the wiki if we manage to get one started up eventually but that will only take a few minutes of rewriting.

Anyway, here's the intro of the essay - let me know what you guys think.

For example; "“The more she hides and abandons her femininity, the more it emerges from the very heart of her existence. A pair of brilliantly cut cotton trousers can be more beautiful than a gorgeous silk gown.”

I am a big fan of Dior's Fall 2012 Show. Kris twist on military uniforms isn't the flashiest and he kept mostly to officer green and black which really fit the theme he was going for. The bird pieces on the back end of the collection really cement this as one of his best shows in my opinion.

I agree entirely, this was Kris' defining show and as you said really cemented his style. I especially love the blend of the flashier officer jackets that look reserved for military presentations and what not with the much blander pieces that would look right at home covered in mud. The last two jackets are insane, appearing as simple camo upon first (thus keeping in line with the military theme) glance but then the forms of birds begin to pop out, such a great use of pattern.

Y-3 Is an unapologetic cash grab. It's a diffusion label of a diffusion label and is aimed at a completely different audience compared to the audience that Yohji makes clothes for. Yohji has been quoted numerously saying that he makes clothes to hide the form, clothes which hide traditional beauty and instead allow for internal, individual beauty to shine. Y-3 in it's entirety does the opposite of that, producing tight fitting sportswear that exemplifies the form.
Honestly have no idea why Yohji let his name be attached to the label seeing as it seems so far detached from how he traditionally treats fashion. I know the dude loves money and is a bloody good businessman but Y-3 just seems like such a cop out.

The more she hides and abandons her femininity, the more it emerges from the very heart of her existence. A pair of brilliantly cut cotton trousers can be more beautiful than a gorgeous silk gown.”

Hiding the human body's form was the entire premise of his debut collection and that same premise can still be seen in his more recent shows, it's just as an important motif of his runway shows as the colour black is.

If you want some further reading I'd read My Dear Bomb by Yohji or read/watch any of his many interviews, he's much less reclusive in regards to interviews when compared to many other high profile designers

That's exactly what I'm getting at with you.
The fact that you can't grip that other people like things you don't like is what gives off an autistic vibe.

By calling other people autistic (or even blind) for liking things you don't like, you make it apparent that you're unable to grasp basic social concepts such as "oh, this other person likes something I don't like and that's okay".

try to get over it. or just try to not express that you think other people are retarded because they like something you don't like. people will eventually like you more then.

It's just odd to see someone on a fashion board with absolutely no interest in this style of clothing as you'd think to be here in the first place you'd need some semblance of interest in 'fashion' and runway falls well under that umbrella term.

However, regarding what you were saying about all these outfits looking shit - attractiveness is completely subjective and finding runway unappealing is an opinion you are entitled to. We're not here to try and change your mind.

perhaps but yohji actually rationalizes it in a way that makes sense instead of taking it as fact.

also, his view is more nuanced. yohji does it in a way to celebrate women. his idea of clothing women to not reveal themselves is more or less a self-imposed restriction rather than one forced upon by society. wearing yohji always gives this sense of maturity and confidence i don't see with other brands and this is largely the reason why

On top of that, unless you're modelling for page spread advertisements in the likes of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc. you're making shit all money. Male modelling is great if you're wanting to make a break into the industry as you can find some great contacts but it's very draining as a career if you're a creative person as you have no say in anything - and most people who are interested in fashion (and modelling) are usually quite creative.
