I have finally put together a list of basic skin care products that I feel the most confident in.
Several of the cleansers and moisturizers works for people with sensitive skin (dryness, dermatitis, rosacea). The recommendations are based off dermatological literature, forum recommendations, and online product reviews. The products in the list should have near-universal approval and quality.

---
Recommended basic morning routine:
1. Cleanser
2. Exfoliator
3. Sunscreen

Recommended basic evening routine:
1. Cleanser
2. Exfoliator
3. Moisturizer
---
Recommended skin care products for the face:

Cleansers:
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser
Aquanil Cleanser

Toners/Exfoliation:
StriDex Medicated Pads, Maximum Strength (2% salicylic acid)
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (salicylic acid)
Alpha Hydrox Oil-Free Treatment 10% AHA*
Paula's Choice 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant*

Moisturizers:
CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion
Cetaphil Daily Advance Lotion
Eucerin Skin Calming Daily Moisturizing Creme
Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream**
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream**
Vaseline Petroleum Jelly**

Sunscreens***:
COUI Skincare Facial Advanced Protection SPF 30
Paula's Choice Hydralight Shine-Free Daily Mineral Complex SPF 30
Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46
Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily Defense SPF 50
Shiseide Senka Aging Care UV Sunscreen SPF 50
Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 110 (Overkill)

---
*Increases sun sensitivity. Use in the evening.

**Heavy/thick. Will probably leave your face shiny. Primarily intended for the body, or for evening use on face.

***All of these offer UVA + UVB protection. Can be used on the body.

Try to use a minimal routine, because there is a "functional limit" to how many products you can effectively use on your face at the same time. The products interfere with each other. Cleanse + clay mask + toner + exfoliation + spot treatment + serum + eye cream + moisturizer + sunscreen is simply an expensive and ineffective clusterfuck.

>> No.10065964

>>10065925
It depends completely on what skin issues you have. See the list below your post.

>>10065933
Please note that you do not need to use exfoliators daily - but generally people can use mild products such as StriDex several times a day (after getting used to the product). If you're only going to use exfoliators once daily, then use them in the nighttime.

8-10% AHA, for example. is not something you should be using on a daily basis.

You can use exfoliation products as often as you'd like. You'll know your limit once your skin starts to sting, go red red and dry, and peel excessively. There's a balance there that you need to find. I use a salicylic acid solution at ~2% twice daily.

>>10066445
See the stuff titled "Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation" in OP. In essence:

1. Use a sunscreen to protect your skin from going darker
2. Lighten it using stuff like various AHAs, hydroquinone, ascorbic acid, or Murad Post-Acne Spot Lightening Gel.

Afterwards, don't get acne. If you do get acne, protect it from the sun both during the acne as well as during the healing process. Your skin likes to produce melanin. Try to encourage it to not do that.

Alright so my acne has cleared up a lot buy my skin doesn't look the best because it is so oily (especially in the summer time).

My routine is (for morning & night):
1.Dessert Essence Tea Tree Oil Face wash (w/ cold water)
2. Let air dry
3. Moisturize w/ Desert Essence moisturizer (pretty sure tea tree based)
4. (At night only) tea tree blemish stick

My skin looks great after wash and like 2-3 hours after wash but then becomes too shiny oily. Is it because of the moisturizer?

& how important is sunscreen?

Essentially: go with a basic routine. Cleanse, and exfoliate. It help you get rid of the stuff that is stuck in your "pores"/pilosebaceous ducts. Some people use clay masks for that purpose. I can't vouch for them. Look for a "pore minimizer" for specific (and expensive) product suggestions. A revised oil cleansing method could work, too. I would just go with cleanser + BHA.

Well, benzoyl peroxide is not an alpha-hydroxy acid. But it does make your skin more sensitive to sun though, and it is generally recommended that it shouldn't be used in the morning. SA is a milder morning option. Salicylic acid can even be used to prevent and restore sun damage.
Don't forget the sunscreen - especially not when you're on BP.

Ah, right. Good to hear that it has helped. I would probably just increase the number of times applied/day for SA, since it seems to have worked for you.

The concentration of BP to go for is 2.5%. Beyond that the increase in effectiveness is generally not worth the increase in side effects. Most people experience redness/burning/scaling during the first week or so. I would wait 1-2 weeks before trying that, in order to see how I respond to increased SA usage.

More info on BP:
>>/fa/thread/S9336061#p9351221

There isn't that much of a difference between different BP products. Just make sure that BP is the main active ingredient.

Yes.
They are all intended to clean the skin without drying it out, and without irritating it and causing the skin to become oilier.

For oily skin, I would probably use CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser (and not the Hydrating one).

As for moisturizers, the *** ones are some you probably don't want to use in the morning. Both the Cetaphil and CeraVe lotions are water-based and are reputed to not make oiliness worse (and actually help make the skin less oily).

What about shaving? Kinda hate to admit it here, but I'm trans, so I obviously like a super clean shave. However, using Gillette's Fusion Proglide, I usually always have some ingrowns on my upper lip and chin. I have PIH scars that are fading very slowly. Texture wise, they feel exactly the same as an unblemished patch of skin, but the red/brown marks run deep. I've been using 10% AHA (glycolic) for several months now without really seeing a marked improvement, despite increasing the usage from every second day mixed with moisturizer to every night in place of moisturizer. I apply facial sunscreen if I go out, and I follow a pretty simple routine with CeraVe's cleanser and lotion with the niacinamides. I'm going to supplement some Hydroquinone soon.

Recently, I heard about a home remedy using a Boric Acid/Glycerin paste topically to fade scars. There are many lifestyle blog pages online that say it's an effective solution, but absolutely no concrete studies backing it like the traditional glycolic acid / niacinamides that I'm using. I've heard both good and bad about this. Is it advisable to try it out? Or will it burn me and make a smaller problem into a larger one?

>> No.10070418

>>10070251
Right.

As for moisturizers: The ones listed are good. If you need something to use in the daytime, I would suggest a mattifying sunscreen. Will hopefully make your skin less shiny.

As for chemical exfoliators, the one's I can recc are listed.

Shaving: Shave with the grain, and try to make sure that your razor is sufficiently sharp. Shave after showering, and use a shaving cream/gel. An electric razor is less likely to give you ingrown hairs, but it will not give you an as close of a shave. As a long term solution, I think you should totally go for laser hair removal. Very effective.

Witch hazel can possibly be effective when trying to trying to control oiliness. I don't know that much about it. The exfoliators listed are meant to prevent acne, among several other things (pH control, bacteria growth, aging signs, skin absorption, sun protection, luster, et c).

Also, if you happen to be q_ko - please come back.

>>10070355
As you may know, it is often needed to use a combination of substances to see major improvement in PIH (like you've done, to some extent). Your pigmentation seems to run deep in your skin, and it is therefore not that likely that you will succeed to peel it away using various chemicals at home.

I would see a dermatologist if I were you. They'll know what to do, and can offer you true power-options. Some prescription-only combination therapies will hopefully do the trick.

Note that red marks is rather "post-inflammatory erythema" and could get worse from some PIH treatments (especially some acid stuff). You could even make your pigmentation worse by irritating your skin using the wrong chemicals at wrong concentrations, so I would just see a derm instead to play it safe.

[Not a doctor, et c]

Thank you. I would see a derm but the backlog here according to my family doc is around 4 months, which I don't really have because I move cross-country for school.

They don't appear to be PIE since the test for PIE vs. PIH is that PIE disappears or diminishes in the presence of pressure, while PIH does not.

Hopefully the Hydroquinone treatment works out - I've heard it's very efficient when combined with the AHA

Guys, I found out I have a relatively painful and larger-than-usual pimple growing on my face (still in its early stage). How can I stop from getting worse/leaving a scar? Just let it develop until it's ready to ooze?

My sister uses this tea tree oil cleanser from The Body Shop that she says works wonders, but I don't know...

I hate it when this shit happens, and my face is actually clear too.

Help is appreciated

The most important thing is to drink enough water every single day, at least 84 ounces of water daily.

Also if you're not steaming your face at least once a week you might as well be throwing your money in the bin. A good 10-15 minute light steam followed by a daily cleanser will do much more for your skin than washing with the cleanser and other products alone for 4 days straight.

big up STHLM, probably the best trip going

if I could get some advice please

had pretty mild acne, but had a course of roaccutane about 2 yrs ago. Now my acne is coming back with 2-5 little whiteheads each morning.

at the moment I am doing

>morning
face wash with cetaphil bar soap
cerave moisturizer

>evening
face wash with cetaphil bar soap
applying freederm cream to spots ( nicotinamide 4%)
cerave moisturizer

should I be swap out for the freederm for some sort of BP?

Alright. Hopefully it turns out alright.
Remember to make sure that your SPF is at least +30, and that it protects against both UVA and UVB.

>>10070677
Not necessarily! It's probably just squeaky clean. It will probably need some moisture afterwards, though. What cleanser are you using?

>>10074010
Yep. That's because 84 ounces of water daily is a rather arbitrary number that doesn't take important factors like body mass, activity levels, outside temperature, air humidity, salt intake, caffeine intake, or other things into consideration.

Drinking water is a common advice in these threads, but I think the potential benefits from increased water intake exist because when you drink more water you probably drink less dairy/high GI drinks - that has been shown to contribute to acne.

More info:
>>/fa/thread/S9336061#p9361475

>>10076037
I don't know that much about them. If you're feeling underwhelmed, then you can try applying them more often and see what happens.

>>10076133
That's mainly because 1. it's easier to deal with the environmental common causes behind it, and 2. it's kind of hard for products applied to the skin to reach down to the areas it needs to reach. Lasers seem to work, though. I would just use BB cream in the meantime.

>>10076147
ACV is actually quite good as long as you don't apply too much of it for too long. It helps counter the high pH of most other skin care products, and helps bring the pH of the skin down to healthy levels and prevents the growth of "acne bacteria".

>>10076253
Retinoids as well as ascorbic acid are recommended there. The firs tip is a bit controversial, considering that erythema is a common side-effect of retinoid treatment. Retinoid usage can also cause a kind of rosacea. Ascorbic acid seems to work, though, as it has been found to help make red skin less red, like after different kinds of brutal in-clinic skin therapies.

>>10076032

Even though the bar soap is a syndet one, and therefore much better than most other bar soaps, using the dedicated facial cleanser would probably be good.

Freederm Gel is /okay/. I'd probably just use some AHA/BHA stuff at first, and then consider BP after a couple of weeks. Roaccutane is apparently also a thing you could try again if you feel the need.

AHA, BHA, or BP - to a greater extent than on the face since your skin is much thicker/less sensitive on the back for example (maybe don't overdo the BP though...). Remember to not use ordinary too-alkaline bar soap on your back.

Other tricks people use is to try to change bedding quite often, as well as wearing a clean t-shirt every night (to avoid the accumulation of skin residues/oil/dirt/bacteria). Not tested if it works in controlled studies afaik, though.

As for diet, avoiding dairy seems to be one of the few things we actually have reason to do when it comes to acne. I'll probably do a write-up on that.

I'll hand you some wild cards from vast academic dermatological depths that could possibly help:

- topical linoleic acid (found in high amounts in grape seed oil and safflower oil)
- topical phytosphingosine
- http://www.direct-ms.org/pdf/EvolutionPaleolithic/Acne%20vulgaris.pdf (try to apply it to some extent, if you haven't already)

also, if you are considering suicide then you probably need a therapist as well as a dermatologist. I personally think there are more things to life than great (or shitty) skin. There are so many wonderful things in life that do not depend on the state of your skin. I think you can have a decent time anyways.

Can 4 months of a good skincare routine take slightly bad skin to pretty good? (I'm not expecting flawless, but you know)

My issues encompass:
>Acne, but it's very minor
>T-Zone as fuck; nose and forehead are oily but cheeks are drier than the sahara
>Acne scars; pitted/icepick and hyper pigmentation but the pitted/icepick scars are pretty minor so I don't really care if they don't get reduced I mostly want the hyper pigmentation gone
>Sebaceous filaments (I do realize these are permanent but I hear there's ways to reduce their appearance)

Random input here.

I clean my face regularly, exfoliate somewhat often, use moisturizer and sunscreen during the day. My skin is still prone to acne so I always have to watch it.

One thing I've realized this summer though is that my skin really clears up when I go swimming more often. What is it that does this?

My guess was the antibacterial properties with a bit of sunlight. With that being said. How can I mimic this effect without a pool or hardh chemicals?

so i read over some of the faqs, and sorry for some degree of spoonfeeding, but i just caught this thread and was looking for some advice.

my skin has slowly been clearing up over the years (23, male, had moderate acne as a teenager), but it really still isn't 'healthy'. i don't get many big nasty whiteheads or anything any more (maybe 1-2/week), but my face is still very oily, like straight up oil slick on the way home from work. because of this i still get a lot of blemishes and small filled pores like the nasty ass video in the op with someone cleaning out pores with some dermatology tool, especially around my nose. i also still get lots of small blemish/bumps that i am not really sure what to even classify as, since they arent really whiteheads but are still filled pimples.

im looking to put the final nail in the coffin and clear my face up but all this stuff is a lot of info to take in at once. anyone care to give me a link or tldr for a good treatment regimen for clearing up oily skin and helping reduce oiliness?

currently i havent really made much of an effort, but i would like to start. all i do right now is use a cleanser in the morning (clean and clear morning cleanser) and then wash my face with water at night. i also occasionally will wash off after working out in the evenings. any suggestions for regimen/products to look into?

naw man. use it. I've had years of acne and acne scars. I've tried AHA peels Gycolic peels. I've used ACV for years trying to get rid of acne scars.

here is my regiment.

>African black soap
>Indian healing clay mask w/ green matcha and charcoal powder once a week
>I use a black head remover that I scrap off deadskin / black heads after a hot shower
>I do egg white masks once a week
>AHA lotion 2x a day

my skin hasn't looked better. The AHA lotion is really helping. Another company on ebay sells a big bottle of it. I might try that to save money.

Drink lots of water too. Get your god damn veggies and fruit in too.

Next I'm going to try to do some stand up sun tanning at a tanning salon by me.

Generally speaking, an AHA like glycolic acid can help fade hyperpigmentation and also reduce the apperance of pores. Alternatively, use Salicylic Acid 1%-2% on thise areas, at least 1 time a day.

Use sunscreen at 30spf or higher if you're going to be outdoors at all.

Also, if you're using a physical exfoliator, stop. Using Salicylic Acid as an exfoliator, or any chemical for that matter, is much better for your skin.

those looks like completely ordinary primarily closed comedones. some open ones as well (darker). it's rather the sebaceous ducts that get clogged and swell, rather than the glands themselves. see pic for details.

Why is a physical exfoliator bad?

>> No.10089393

>>10089188
Most physical exfoliators have small particles with sharp edges. This tend to leave tiny cuts all over your face which damages the layer under the dead cells.

There is the option of the plastic beads, which won't damage your face with cuts. However, you will probably over exfoliate AND they're very bad for the environment. (Some countries have banned these beads)

Chemical exfoliation is better for your skin because it evenly, and gently, sheds the outer layer of dead skin while also cleaning pores from the inside.

>> No.10089406

>>10065933
The /fa/ wiki says you should exfoliate first before anything when doing your routine? Not sure who to trust now.

>> No.10089489

>>10089406
Cleansing before exfoliating allows the chemical to better absorb into the skin.

Exfoliating should only be done prior to cleansing if it's a physical exfoliant. Which you shouldn't use anyways.

This thread has inspo'd me to get a decent skin care routine.

I have mild acne. I was on antibiotics for a few months which helped stop new spots from forming, but there was always this 'background' of less active (is that a thing?) spots. I've stopped them now, because I don't like the idea of them affecting my gut flora and shit. I might ask my GP for benzoyl peroxide -- I was on 10% a couple years ago but I'll make sure to get 2.5% this time. There's been studies to show that BP may be carcinogenic, but oh well.

I've gauged a routine I'll start from the links in the OP -- anyone with experience mind checking if it's okay?

Once a day:
Oatmeal facemask
Twice a day (morning & before sleep):
Cleanser, then astringent, then moisturiser (or should moisturisers be avoided with acne?)
3 times a week:
Exfoliator
Once a week:
Clay facemask

>> No.10089772

>>10089620
If you have small and closed comedones, adding SA 2% daily would be a good idea.

Using BP 2.5% is definitely a good idea as well if you have red/inflammed pustules/papules.

The oatmeal facemask is good but probably won't need that daily. Mousturizer in excessive amounts can cause more acne as it mixes with your dead skin cells and will clog the pores. However, the right amount of moisturizer can reduce oil production and reduce the shedding of cells into your pores which can minimize acne.

A basic routine would be:
-Cleanse morning/night.
-Exfoliate via SA
-Spot treat with BP
-Sunscreen (morning) / moisturizer (night)

Face masks can do be 1-2 times a week for desired results.

This all depends on your skintype though.

I use both SA and BP and never do face masks and my skin has improved but for others it will cause extreme dryness.

if you want nice skin you need to accept that it will take time and possible a lifestyle change. in order of importance in my opinion
1. Exercise outside around 3 days a week(wear sunscreen and drink plenty water)
2. Don't stress about what to wash your face with. I normally just wash with water unless my face is actually dirty. Moisturize often, brand really doesn't matter I use a large bottle for my entire body. Wear sunscreen anytime you go outside. Don't shower/scrub your face 3 times a day.
3. Eat relatively healthy, best foods for skin are obviously vegetables, fruits, and fish. Try to limit sugars/dairy. If you plan on running a lot, I strongly suggest drinking chocolate milk after runs.
4. Take multi-vitamin, vitamin c, vitamin d/calcium, and fish oil supplements.

Time is probably the biggest problem, by mid 20s your acne will likely be gone, accutane and other acid based acne products will do more harm to your skin in the long run.

the less i worried about my face the better it got. if you have acne, there is no overnight cure to get rid of it, using harsh cleansers/remedies when you are stressing out about your face won't make it any better. you should live a healthy, happy, stress-free life and with enough time you will clear up.

I will just post my routine. Take my advice or don't.

First and foremost, pretty much anything you purchase at the grocery store is complete crap. Old Spice, AXE, Etc all smell like a chemical toliet (think about it, it really does).

Birchbox.com is literally the best thing you can do for yourself and your daily routine. They send you 3-5 large samples of some of the best products made for only $20 a month. You fill out their little survey and they send you stuff based on your skin type. Try out what you like and whats best for you.

1. Take a shower, every day. EVERY DAY. EVERY FUCKING DAY.

2. Wash your hair first. I use Davines MOMO shampoo. Worth every cent and smells like nothing else and worth every penny. I typically dont use conditioner. I dont have a ton of hair and I feel its harder to comb.

3. Wash your face. First with a "scrub" or exfoliate. I use Billy Jealousy LiquidSand Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. Good Stuff.

>> No.10090266

>>10090262

2/3

4. Wash your face AGAIN with a daily cleanser. I use DTRT foaming cleanser.
https://www.birchbox.com/men/dtrt-foam-cleanser-face-to-face

I think of it like this...Why "clean" the dead shit on your face. Scrub it away and then ACTUALLY clean your face.

Also, each time you clean, spend TIME doing it. 20 seconds isnt going to do shit. Get into the crevasses. Behind your ears, under your chin, around your eyes. Neck. EVERYWHERE. You should be spending at LEAST 2 min at each phase.

5. Wash your body. This sounds simple but once again, most people suck.

First, go out and buy yourself a luffa AND a back scrubber and each time you are done using them, take a small squirt bottle and spray them down with cleaning vinegar. This will sanatize them for next time.

As for body wash, I switch back and forth. Everyman Jack has an EXCELLENT product line. Cant go wrong with Sandlewood. Its more pricey but it lasts 10 times longer than Old Spice.

I live in Arizona and I also use Dr. Bonners Peppermint soap because that shit will wake you up in the morning with the peppermint chill...whoa buddy!

Put the soap on your body and scrub yourself down with the luffa. GET EVERY WHERE. Feet, legs, Taint, EVERYWHERE. Remember, people can smell you no matter how much you only wash your "top"

Use the back brush to scrub your back. This will get rid of your back acne.

6. RINSE yourself. This is SUPER important. Seems dumb and "Duh" BUT RINSE for at least 3-4 minutes.

7. Get out of the shower and use a CLEAN towel. Not "clean-ish" but CLEAN. I only use a towel 3 times before I wash it.

PAT DRY. All the bitch ass oils you just put on, you want them to stay there? Pat yourself dry. Takes the same amount of time as scrub drying.

>> No.10090272

8. Body lotion. This is personal preference but use something decent. Not that Shaq shit you see on TV. I personally use Eucerin Original Healing. It has literally no smell. Its as thick as caulk and then melts into you. Takes me at least 10 minutes to get it everywhere, but fuckin worth it.

A side note...put lotion under your armpits before you put on your deodorant. Your deodorant will go on smoother and it feels amazing. Also, learn the difference between anti-persperant and deodarant. They are different. I live in Arizona so Anti-persperant is my only choice.

It will take the lotion a bit to absorb. I would also reccomend Burts Bees Honey and Shea butter. If everyone smelled like that stuff, there would be world-peace.

9. Now face...

First, Shave your face. Everywhere you dont want hair. It helps clean and will make it smoother. I personally hone my razor blades on my jeans before I shave every time.

Next, use a facial wipe...YES I KNOW YOUR FACE IS CLEAN. Wipe it anyways. I use Burts Bees Brand Facial Wipes for Sensitive Skin. Even after my routine (which is more than most) I still wipe dirt off my face. I also use it to wipe behind my ears, in my ears, anywhere gunk and dead skin can develop.

Use a toner. Anything with Witch Hazel is good. Vitamin C is even better. Nothing with alcohol.

10. Eye cream. This stuff is expensive but freaking worth it. Makes your eyes look bright and awake. Also, whatever you use, it should be at least $30 or more but will last well over 4-5 months.

11. Face lotion...Face lotion can be expensive. I personally use Clark's Botanicals Smoothing Marine Cream. It smells like you received a facial from mother nature herself.
https://www.birchbox.com/men/clark-s-botanicals-smoothing-marine-cream but once again, I would try Birchbox and narrow down which one is best FOR YOU.

12. Hair...Once again, dont use run of the mill shit. It smells like shit. It gets on your face (you touch your hair and your face ALL day long. Use something with the LEAST amount of ingredients.

Notable mentions...

-Get an exfoliate to sand down your feet. Sounds gay but feels amazing walking around.

-Cologne. Dont ruin your routine by smelling like a cloud of shit. Three sprays to your wrist, tap them together a couple times, then tap them behind your ears and your neck. Thats IT. And remember TAP them together...dont rub.

-Order a some essential oil to rub on your palms. I personally use Texas Cedarwood or Sandalwood. JUST ONE OR TWO DROPS on your palm and rub your hands together. Studies find that when people shake hands they "sniff" their hands afterwards. Human equivalent of dogs sniffing each others asses.

-Brush your teeth at least three times a day for at least 5 min. mouth wash, floss (I also mix a little tea tree oil and water and swish with that once a day). Not only can bad breath ruin an entire routine but do you know how much an abscessed tooth hurts? I do, and I dont wish that on my worst enemy. Truth me, take care of your teeth.

-IRON YOUR DAMN CLOTHES. LEARN HOW. NOW.

Face care is overall hygiene in general, not just your face. Its not gay or un manly to take care of yourself. You can listen to the so called "manly guys" who throw AXE or Suave on their bodies for a three min shower OR you can swim in pussy...your choice.

>Don't stress about what to wash your face with.
I agree there's no point in stressing too much but there are products that are better than others. Foaming cleansers tend to be very harsh for most skin types except maybe Asians.

>I normally just wash with water unless my face is actually dirty.
Great, you have good skin. I also wash with water most of the time, but somebody with an oily skin may need a light cleanser in the morning/night.

>Moisturize often, brand really doesn't matter I use a large bottle for my entire body. Wear sunscreen anytime you go outside. Don't shower/scrub your face 3 times a day.
Alright, that's fine.

>Eat relatively healthy, best foods for skin are obviously vegetables, fruits, and fish.
They have a very, very small effect and only for some types of acne.

>Try to limit sugars/dairy. If you plan on running a lot, I strongly suggest drinking chocolate milk after runs.
>good recovery drink, cheaper than buying protein powder. you will feel full also
It's not better than protein powder if you're looking for hypertrophy but it's alright for most people. Having said that if you're lactose intolerant it will most likely make you break out.

>if you have acne, there is no overnight cure to get rid of it
Yes there is, not "overnight" but between 1 and 3 months that's been proven to work on most people.

>using harsh cleansers/remedies when you are stressing out about your face won't make it any better
Yes and no, I agree that harsh cleansers are bad (funny that you said it didn't matter what you used earlier) but there harsh and proven cures like peels. Even BP is pretty harsh and very effective used properly.

Good job ignoring all the work that researchers have done on acne, faggot.

Not OCD. Its called being an adult. I learned my lesson from being a teen and my early 20s. When you grow up and realize that other adults (especially successful ones) take care of themselves, it starts to separate the dumb and poor from the smart and successful.

Your routine sucks and you should be sad you can't recognize that. Protip: If your routine is longer than Patrick Bateman's you're doing something wrong.

More is not better, continuing to wash/exfoliate/wipe your face over and over again is going to strip your face and make it overproduce oil. You shouldn't wash your face more than two times a day and you shouldn't exfoliate it more than every 3 days. You shouldn't be washing your hair more than every other day or it will be greasy.

Not even him but most people can exfoliate every day, even twice daily, there's research on this.
See for example http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8651713 this isn't for acne but it's pretty much the same acid exfoliating creams use.
Of course you still use moisturizing/lotion/toner after that.

>You shouldn't be washing your hair more than every other day or it will be greasy.
It's not as black and white, a bad shampoo is going to wreck your hair but some shampoos can be used daily. Whether he is using a good one or not, I don't know, but it can be done.

Melanin-augmented individuals need sunscreen, too. Just go with anything +30 SPF (that protects against both UVA/UVB). See the list.

When it comes to excess oil, the cleansers are all good at not drying the skin excessively, irritating it, and making your skin oilier.

Note that how your skin appears after your routine is very dependent on what you apply last. Consider a good oil-free moisturizer or a "mattifying" foundation/sunscreen.

Is cleansing followed by SA pads the same as cleansing then using a physical exfoliant product?

Chemical and physical exfoliation would be excessive, so you wouldn't need to buy anything to scrub if you're using salicylic acid.
However because salicylic acid is a BHA it might be worth looking into something with an AHA in as well, such as glycolic acid, to use before the salicylic if your skin isn't too sensitive. Salicylic works on a deeper pore level but an AHA beforehand helps cut through the surface dead skin cells or oils.

Try just to use an AHA at night though because they can increase sun sensitivity.

Wait someone said this is a physical exfoliant
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clean-Clear-Exfoliating-Daily-Wash/dp/B000KUAITS/ref=cm_cr_dp_asin_lnk

Is that right? This is just a cream. I thought physical exfoliation is where you actually scrub off the dead skin.

So would cleanser -> astringent -> SA pads -> the linked product be excessive?

Thanks man, I get it now. So would cleanser -> astringent -> SA pads -> moisturiser -> suncream in the morning work towards clearer/softer skin and less acne? Or is there something I'm missing? I think I'm alright without AHA because I've read that BHA are the main importance if the main aim is to remove acne.

It could work but it's not an exact science. If it's not clearing your skin then add a spot treatment or a night routine, just give it a few weeks each time you modify your routine to know if it's helping or not.

Cleanser, SA pads, Sunscreen is all you need, most likely.

You shouldn't need to combine a moisturizer and a sunscreen.

An astringent shouldn't be needed there either.

>>10094307
Well, it will help make your skin not dry - as in red/irritated/painful/scaling/tight.
It will probably also give your skin a more even tone, and a bit healthier "glow" (shine).

>>10094702
Cleanser is generally applied with warm/lukewarm water and rinsed off.

Exfoliation is either applied and washed off, or left to do its work.

Moisturizers are left on the skin.

>>10094730
Uh, hm.

I wouldn't risk any DIY treatments.
There is a real risk of you making it worse.

Ask your doctor for some kind of scar removal. A derm should know exactly what to do.
