How to pull off fougeres if you're in your early 20s? I really like L'Artisan Fou d'Absinth but I get "smells like Old Man" comments, and that's supposed to be one of the more modern and youthful fougeres.

Just purchased this, waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I wanted to add one more to my summer wardrobe and hopefully this fits the bill. A lot of people don't like the 2012 version but I was looking for something a little more refined and classy and the added iris should give it those qualities. Also wanted to get into the Dior Homme line and this seems like a good entry point

Are fougeres those typical classic "barbershop" scents?

If so, I'd say it's almost impossible. You can still wear it if you like the scent but it's always gonna smell oldman-ish to others.

Yes. Don't worry about it. Young people can wear whatever they want and everyone else will just have to deal because they're uglier.
I think it's time for the fougere to come back.

>> No.9999003

>>9998919
Generally speaking, yes, although the most important thing about a scent is whether or not you like it.

As for 1 million, personally I think it's only good for one thing and that is going out/clubbing. It's a very loud and shouty fragrance so it works well in situations in which you want to draw attention to yourself. If that's the only time you wear a fragrance then yes, its a perfectly fine choice. I guess the only drawback would be that it is a very popular fragrance and you run the risk of smelling the same as a lot of other guys. There are plenty of other fragrances out there that fill a similar role to 1 million that are less popular and would help you differentiate

Now, if you want to expand your wardrobe and start wearing fragrance more in an everyday manner then yes, there are plenty of 'better' choices

Well, as far as 'night-out' scents go, I guess you could look at these:
Dior Homme Intense
Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'Homme
Thierry Mugler A*Men
Versace Eros
Carolina Herrera 212 VIP Men
Carolina Herrera CH Men
Givenchy Pi
Lancome Hypnose

Of course those are just my suggestions, there are plenty of others out there

And as far a finding an everyday, all occasion type of scent, look no further than these two:
Bleu de Chanel
Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme

But what I would recommend more than anything is going over to Fragrantica.com and posting this same question over there, tons of knowledgeable and friendly people who would love to help you out

If you're looking to have a signature scent, or to just stand out in general, just find a good 'niche' fragrance, maybe it's just my anecdotal nonsense but I feel like people in places like New York, California, etc are more likely to use fragrances as opposed to states like Oklahoma, Kansas, etc.

>> No.10009938

>>10009895
spraying your skin, especially pulse points, makes the scent stronger and dissipate faster. also it mixes with your natural scent, which could give you your signature scent. don't spray under your arms pls that's incorrect. crotch is entirely optional

spraying to clothes makes it last longer, because it dissipates more slowly due to lower heat. so for weak frags or shit that doesn't have great longevity, spraying your clothes can make it perform better for you. also spraying clothes and skin both gives a more accurate representation of how the fragrance actually is imo.

spraying hair is pointless imo. just spray your skin and shirt or jacket.

and I'd never apply directly to clothes, especially jackets, etc., that aren't washed frequently. stronger scents literally last weeks and get stale

There's very few scents that will stay on my skin regardless of placement. I feel as if they're gone in about an hour. This can be the shittiest of the shitty or some of the top tier houses.

Where do you suggest to spray other than neck and wrists?

>> No.10011090

>>10010751

This. I can still feel a mix of Fahrenheit and Bvlgari Aqua on the sleeve of my bomber and it's been at least 2 months since I last wore it (plus, I didn't even spray it on the jacket itself, it merely got rubbed into the material from my wrists).

About spraying, I think the best method is to spray on the neck first, one on both sides, on the veins. For powerful frags, that's usually enough. With most designer edts, though, you can safely do 4-5 sprays especially if you have dry skin. After the neck, I tend to spray on the middle of my collarbone and my wrists, in that order. Wrists have the best projection but the scent tends to get rubbed/washed off.

>> No.10011128

>>10010969

Try Montale frags, they're regarded as the most powerful scents you can get, both projection and longevity-wise (1 spray is enough). Also, moisturize before you spray.

Are you sure it's not just olfactory fatigue?

>> No.10011172

>>10011128

Thanks for the suggestions. It's not fatigue. I've asked friends if they can smell what I'm wearing. 9/10 they say they can't smell shit. Agents and Tuscan Leather tend to stay, but anything outside of that is gone in an hour.

*looks up Iris Silver Mist on Fragrantica

>opens with a dank, moldy ashtray accord... The heart is a strong carrot note... it's bitter carrot skin... develops an industrial drain cleaner vibe
>This is a garden, perceived from beneath the ground. Inside something sinister, something too gentle and innocent to exist is fighting to be born... and wins. This is an earthworm's love letter to a stalk of iris. It is incredibly weird, it scared the hell out of me, and I fell in love with it.
>Sweet smell of crushed stinkbug... Postapocalyptic iris. Iris, as described by the tribe of feral children in Mad Max.
>The air is moody, and the world feels magical and other worldly. New plants are pushing up and you are spellbound with nature’s rhythms. On impulse you pull out a clump of new growth and shake the dirt from the roots. This sweet smell of nature and renewal is Iris Silver Mist

paper and adhesive, obv, mainly used in "anti-perfumes" (blame CdG for their popularity). not that good, really, just a troll note
>aldehydes
actually this one is quite old, and has been used since the beginning of modern perfumery. it describes a certain waxy, soapy quality that the perfume has. also a tiny bit floral, but in a very vague way; just the suggestion of florals really

What is the difference between designer and niche?

And why are pretty much all niche fragrances expensive as unicorn testicles

>> No.10031838

>>10031692
Designers - fashion/lifestyle brands that also produce fragrances. Fragrances are just a branch of what these brands do, they are not their main focus. Usually designer scents are 'safer' and made to appeal to a wider consumer base. Examples include Chanel, Dior, YSL, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana...

Niche - brands that only produce fragrances (although some brands like Commes des Garcons are considered niche because of the complexity of their fragrances). Niche scents are usually more daring and out-there. Examples include Creed, Bond No. 9, L'Artisan Parfumeur, Frederic Malle, Serge Lutens, Byredo, Le Labo, Maison Francis Kurkdijan, Xerjoff....

Reasons for niche pricing
1. These brands only produce fragrances, they need to charge higher prices because that is their only source of revenue
2. Niche brands usually use higher quality ingredients as compared to designers....quality raw ingredients are expensive thus these brands have to charge high prices in order to turn a profit
3. People who buy niche fragrances are willing to pay a higher price for what they perceive as a better quality and more exclusive product

So I've been sorta going back and forth on this one, because I wanted to add it to my collection a while ago but then I revisited the EdT and liked it just as much.

Which one do you guys prefer? The EdP or the EdT?

I think I prefer the EdP, but I'm not sure how suitable it is for daily use, and it doesn't seem to perform well enough to be a night time scent.

I prefer the EDT. I think the added woodsy & amber notes in the EDP actually detract from Bleu's biggest selling point for me: the versatility. The EDT is an all season, every occasion fragrance, where as the EDP is just a little too heavy to really work in the warmer weather. Also, the performance of the EDP is not miles ahead of the EDT

That said, that is just my opinion, buy whichever one you like the most

I have Avant Garde and I usually wear anywhere between 5-6 sprays (one on each side of my neck, one on each shoulder and one on the back of my neck). It isn't a loud fragrance by any means though, it generally sits close to the skin and doesn't project well but I think that's kind of the point, its a spicy, powdery, sensual scent that works best when someone is close to you.

So yeah, I would say to spray more on, 5 to 6 works for me but just experiment and see what works for you

Some people say it smells like curry.

Much like Ellena's other fragrances, it's very unique, definitely not blind buy-material. It has a classic, vintage feel, it doesn't have an "old man smell" but it's definitely for the more mature crowd.

Probably not a "panty dropper" but who cares, you shouldn't wear fragrance for women anyway.

I notice that women's scents are more prominent. I sit next to this girl and her fragrance completely overpowers mine, but not in a bad way, it's just more potent.

Anyways, I'm thinking about swtiching over to perfume instead of cologne. I never get the projection and sillage I want.
