I was in Berlin with a bunch of Canadian students from Alberta and a bunch of these 19-year-old guys in Billabong and American Eagle from middle-of-nowhere oil towns thought they'd get into Berghain because they were foreign. They lined up for two hours, were ultimately turned away and ended up drinking in the bar in our hostel that night

Mostly be patient in line, don't be loud, don't appear at all intoxicated, dress simply, speak a few words of german, and know who's playing that night. Sven, the doorman, is an odd guy though. When I was visiting and tried to go with friends we got turned down one night and let in the next acting the same/wearing the same kinda stuff.

I doubt it's so thoughtful. It's more than likely that they just pick whomever they think looks cool, so the criteria might change subtly, but it's always going to reflect their own personal values (e.g. typical bro guido slag clubber crowd, since everyone else has other places to be).

this topic is beat to death, but for anyone confused about the door policy ~~ snax/ berghain began as a party/space by and for gay berliners, in the last decade and a half has become an internationally renowned nightclub, the premiere spot for techno music worldwide and all that.

the door "judgement" (there is no "policy") varies based on how the night is going, it is intended to keep the place from being 100% steamrolled by tourists and if possible, maintain some semblance of the original cultural and vibe of the club. if you arent into either/both the gay or music cultures of the place, there is no reason to be there. dont envy the doormens' job, they have to make snap judgements with long lines every weekend.

if you are going for techno/house, being turned away at berghain is truly only frustrating for tourists who dont live in berlin and wont get a second chance... "i came all the way here, I @have@ to see the inside of this, the grandest of clubs" ... doesnt get much more tourist than that, go find somewhere else to have a good time in berlin, there is no shortage TBH

for anyone interested on getting in, i can share some advice that has worked for me so far, i went to berghain 5 times so far and got in every time, i dont really speak german too well but its pretty irrelevant if you ask me, well anyway, what works for me is going with a friend and just make sure the bouncers hear you talking about how excited you are for (insert artists name) set or how you cant wait to hear (insert track name) on the soundsystem, protip: it doesnt work if you dont know shit about techno, but in that case berghain isnt for you anyway.
oh and some guy told me that you also get in if you show up shirtless and wear an unzipped bomber, prolly coz of the gay scene, i can confirm this tho :)
im pretty sure they just seperate people into types at the door and try to keep the club filled with equal amount of gays, techno enthusiasts, and newcomers.
btw, tresor is also a great place to check out in berlin
