they're popular because they're gateway fashion brands that are expensive enough to make the teenagers on here feel exclusive and more informed than their troglodyte friends, but cheap enough that they can afford them on their weekly allowance or their meager part time college job.

not that those brands are necessarily horrible, but dont presume /fa/s infatuation is rooted in anything more than their accessibility.

the difference in design is usually glaringly obvious but for more simple things like jeans and truckers you can identify the real deal with either the country of origin or the tags, but i think theory lang is now using some european manufacturers for their higher end stuff. not sure if helmut ever manufactured in usa tbh, don't think so.

in general though

theory: tag like pic related or 'healmut lang new york', made in usa/china/whatever
og: tag like >>9923264 or a smaller tag with only the 'helmut lang' print, either black on white or white on black or in some cases leather. made in italy.

"vintage raf" and "og lang" cover enough material that i think it's hard to make a blanket statement about either of them.

low-rise jeans and snug t-shirts are definitely accessible, so are band tees and college sweatshirts but there's definitely a lot more to each respective career than these things.

personally i don't think accessibility has much to do with validity though.

monochrome converse good for vintage raf look(he used them in all his shows until 05)

i need a good pair of substantial boots or derbies to accompany bulkier fits with HL bombers though, hard to find.

yeh the quintessential clueless fuccboi dressed by the internet look is a pair of velcro highs(bonus points for portugal) with cuffed skinny jeans showcasing the hightop, guaranteed to look shit 100% of the time and obviously not at all how raf designed them to be worn.

i think the velcro was designed as a more refined, luxury replacement for the converse he was using, it was supposed to be a minimal no nonsense shoe that was comfy and easy to wear that didnt distract/contribute too much from the outfit, hence the hem of the pants always partially or fully covering the shoe when styled for the runway.

I cant shake the feeling though that the newfound appreciation for his work stems from people being unwilling to experimenting with new designers, and instead defaulting to already proven brands.

Obviously that's not everyone as both designers have in a lot of ways not yet been replaced by the new blood, but with the constant recommendation and circulation of these two designers, especially online, I dunno. It seems like a lot of people prefer to know that they're clothes are important, rather than just well designed.

>> No.9923586

>>9923573
i think the problem here is a lack of distinction between those that are regurgitating these recommendations out of conditioning, habit or trend (raf simmins rig owns) and those that have actually taken the time to discover the work for themselves. you're definitely correct about people being unwilling to experiment with new designers, i think part of it is that people get stuck in these online environments where opinions are endlessly recycled ad infinitum, i.e. here. though sometimes names will fade away and other times new names are introduced into the cycle.

its more than likely the fact that they're obviously two of the most talented menswear designers in history and very little else compares for influence, design and quality.

that was then, when the two were at their zenith they at least had a few competitors in form people like hedi at dior, margiela, ann d.

but now? nothing comes close, not even themselves(neo raf for example) contemporary menswear is shit.

only remotely interesting designer is gosha as far as im concerned, and hes very inconsistent. raf at the stage of his career that gosha is currently at was putting out collections that defined and changed menswear in its entirety, gosha is obviously not, hes not worth mentioning in the same breathe and hes still the most exciting new talent of last 5 years.

for some the brands appeal may lie in its value as fashion, cultural and style currency(kanye west and the rest) but loving lang and raf is certainly nothing new for a lot of people, and many would wear the clothes whether they were valued at $500 or $1500

See now all I'm hearing is indifference to actual modern movements in fashion, sure there aren't any designers currently indicating the level of cultural impact raf or someone like mcqueen had as I find that there has been a large departure from showmanship in fashion as of late. But clothing is still being pushed into new and interesting areas by loads of talented people, hell there are still plenty of old designers still putting out amazing collections.

raf and helmut makes clothes that look like how i want clothes to look.

rafs world is very much for the boy i wanna dress like and helmut's is for the man. thats it, it comes down to how they look to me personally, if someone comes along and fits that too then thatd be great, but so far nothing has.

Yeah there's a reason he's making so many waves in the industry right now, everyone's expecting him to explode soon and I hope they're right the dude's a mad genius.

Part of me wishes he had a little more of the flair that makes people like old raf and mcqueen so memorable though. He's obviously very focussed purely on clothing, which is great and clothes are just clothes at the end of the day. But I think without a little something more he'll never make the same cultural impacts.

That's perfectly valid to only like them, they're very unique, and hell, they basically make clothes exactly how I want clothes to be as well. I just get so annoyed when people go on about how boring fashion is now when really they just aren't looking far enough, contemporaries do exist that are doing similar things to them, we're even seeing some major designers who were mentored by raf pop up, and they're making some amazing things happen.

i think that's exactly it really. raf was never truly about clothes so much as he was these broader feelings of isolation, independence, brotherhood and tribalism, interpreted by us through the music, cultures, young men, youthful rebellion and uniform. they were given modern context rather than simply being referenced in nostalgia. the magic of raf is that the clothes are the medium and not the end artistic product, though in many cases they managed to be both.

I'll elaborate on this for funsies.
Very early Helmut uses a simple black on white label reading Helmut Lang.
Most late 90's Helmut uses the iconic military style name tag labels, sometimes with the year of production included.
In the later years he had a few different simple labels all saying simply Helmut Lang.
The black on white and white on black labels designate the mass-market lower priced line.
The black on black and white on white labels designate the higher end products.
The made to measure stuff uses black on black labels and says 'Made to Measure' on it as well as Helmut Lang New York.
Bags and pouches usually bear a metal tag reading simply Helmut Lang or Helmut Lang Jeans.
Very early Helmut Lang garments were made in Austria.
Most stuff was made in Italy. A few things were made in Paris.
Some of the m2m stuff may have been made in-house in New York.

Post-Helmut Theory uses a few different labels as well. I'm not as knowledgable on this stuff, but I'll make an attempt.
Earlier Theory labels were larger, black on white, and had more text. Some stuff was made in Japan.
Most Theory stuff uses black on white labels reading just Helmut Lang. The stuff is primarily made in China and Southeast Asia. Some things (I think mostly denim) are made in Japan.
Most recently, garments use a three part label. The main label reads Helmut Lang or Helmut Lang New York (Theory is based in NY). Two smaller labels attached to the main label give the country of manufacture and the size.

The labels are a good way to distinguish OG Helmut from new but mostly it's in the design. Helmut's designs are instantly recognizable for his idiosyncratic take on menswear, subtle manipulations, and luxurious but understated details. The materials are all top notch, from nylon to cotton. Nearly all of his pants have a button fly with an additional waist button. The jackets often include elastic and d-ring straps for better fit and an interesting hanging detail. A common twist on a normal pant or jacket is the addition of leather, either in perpendicular strips or as sleeve sections. Hanging cloth straps are common on both mens and womens garments as well as cutouts on elbows and shoulders. Everything is minimally designed but with attention to every detail.

Helmut's design sense and vision are pretty evident in his own work. After he left the label, it was turned into a much more generic mid-high end womens label. The looks are much more focused on asymmetry and drapes. The designs are minimal but lack the small details that characterized Helmut's work.

The Helmut Lang menswear line was revived much more recently and is currently designed by Alexandre Plokhov, well known for his Cloak label with Robert Geller and his eponymous label.

That's an interesting one. It's definitely OG Helmut. The label and Made in Italy area a dead giveaway, but it's not a jacket I'm familiar with. The design, as someone pointed out, is a bit more in line with Theory's current output. Cool find from the later years that shows the direction that Helmut was moving in. I really like the hood stowing system that doubles as a padded collar.
