My neck is too thick /fa/. Slim dress shirts made for 15" necks fit me well, but it's impossible for me to button them. Shirts made for 16.5" button up well but make me look like a fucking flying squirrel in the chest area, billow out at the bottom, and the sleeves are too long.

I can get shorter sleeves from Charles Tyrwhitt, but that's it - the shirt will still be FAR from fitting the chest. I can normally get away with wearing 15" shirts if I don't have to wear a tie, or the 16.5"s if I do (because then I'm also wearing a jacket and have a military tuck going so you can't see the bad fit), but I don't feel right doing either of those things.

What are my options other than going to a tailor for MTM shirts or benchlifting until my chest expands by six inches?

You can start off by using a knife to slowly shave away the fat in your neck. Then use the fat to fry some fatty pork chops. Eat the pork chops and you will become fatter. Your neck and body are now proportionate.

Just don't button the top buttons

I do that casually but it looks silly with a tie and I have to wear those quite often.

I know this feel.
If I want to buy a shirt that isn't tailored for me I have to use a 16.5" collar for it to actually button up and then the rest of the shirt is like a fucking tent.

at that height and weight, unless you lift regularly, you're fat

I lift semi-regularly (lifted for two years, spotty since January since I moved to a different country and started a new job), and it's a healthy 23.6 BMI anyway.

Honestly, if you want to have a good fitting shirt with your measurements, you are shit out of luck. Your only options are as follows:

A) wear the 16.5 collar and look like a goof

B) wear the 15 collar and look like a goof

C) get a 16.5 collar shirt altered by a tailor

D) go made to measure or bespoke

My personal recommendation is to get MTM. It's really not a whole lot pricier than a standard off the rack and it'll fit almost perfectly. I too have strange measurements and I like to use online retailers such as indochino and moderntailor for my shirts. It's reliable, convenient, and relatively cheap for its market.

It's a pretty normal sizing for dress shirt sleeves since the measurement goes from the centre of the back of the neck.

Same here. 16.5".

Dress shirts choke the shit out of me. Dem deadlifts make for a larger neck.
