Mass production of cheap clothes ruined fashion. Retailers now dictated what was in season based on what was in stock.

Tucking in your shirt is gay now. You can't wear a suit without being considered a try hard or people asking if you're going to a job interview.
Modern African-American fashion is trash just like most of the music.

Something about the early 90s or late 80s just fucked everything over. And then 9-11 happened and nobody gives a shit anymore and color is gone in favor for black, grey, and black grey.

Trust me. I've been around for over 2,000 years and times today are shit for fashion. And no, Apple watches and the latest Kanye album doesn't make the times better (even thought Kanye is a beast). Luckily for you all, you're almost past the last hill of shit.

This is the conclusion I've been coming to as well recently. Since you seem to know your stuff, do you know how suits became so expensive, and so shit at the same time? It seems that from 20's to 70's you could buy a good/full canvassed/maybe even bespoke suit for around 70$ (700$ adjusted for inflation). Nowadays a 1000$ doesn't guarantee full canvassing. Even brands like RLPL make suits of shitty 6 oz, no drape, tissue paper fabrics. Not even going to talk about the Italians. Current bespoke seems to be aimed solely at African dictators at 6000$ a pop. Surely things like this couldn't have cost this much back then. Even bespoke shoes were almost de rigeur from 20's to 50's.
What happenned?

80's and the 90's made fashion all about the design of the clothes and fast fashion. 80's economic boom and individualism made everyone more focused on themselves, how they look and how they should act. Compare this with the ever ending "wealthcore" threads you moron love to make, that is the 80's spirit in its true form. "Now when I finally got money I can buy everything Ive ever wanted! I can look like I have money!! And I need to act like I have money!!! I need to buy the latest everything!! I need a new car! I need a new watcH!! I need that Hermes belt!! Just let me take a loan!!" It turns out quite quickly however, that being wealthy is not just about the money, its the attitude you have, the knowledge, the books you've read and the way you behave and much more.

Although the term design for clothing have existed since the early 19th century (Chanel comes in mind and other early fashion houses) and the standard of living got better by that time for the common man and woman, mass consumerism didn't hit that hard until the 80's. Before that people still bought clothes to last, if it broke you fixed it by going to a cobbler/tailor and more, you never came across someone who just HAD to buy something new every day or who went out two days in a row just to buy new shoes, bags or trousers before that.

Less materials means that they save money. Clothes today are not focused to last a long time, they focus on showing off and give other people the vibe that you're successful. Today a man who can afford a 1000 dollar suit can probably buy a new one in six months because everyone more money today and especially faster today than before.

A good suit was a right of passage for any boy to a man. Before a certain period, there was no teenage hood. You went from a boy to a man, and you are required to dress the part.

The good and bad of all this can be discussed somewhere else, but I'm of the opinion that cheap materials, cheap labor costs, and basically the extinction of people who make suits is a cause for it. Now you have name brand suits, and cheap suits made by the Chinese/South Americans with paper thin materials. No longer is it very common to go down to the locally owned, self employed tailor, who has most likely been in it as a family business for generations.

People now have to go to that sketchy overpriced suit place or basically stores like The Men's Warehouse.

>>9876818
This too. Modern clothes are expendable. They are throwaways. All your Chinese Nike's and designer Chinese shoes are meant to be throwaways. You wear your plastic/rubber shoes, you get them dirty, you wear them out and get holes and you toss them for another set.

Before you went to the cordwainer, he measured both your feet, and he made you shoes that you would wear, and you would polish, and you would take care of.
If something happened, you took them to the cobbler for repair or adjustments.

Now the mentality is the "one size fits all" shoe, so you get more and more people with back problems, knee problems, posture problems, etc.

Also missing from life now are the hat (for logical purposes, not JUST for fashion), the glove, and the handkerchief (thank the disposal and wasteful paper towel).

>>9876801
Yep yep yep. Also nothing wrong with the Classical design houses. Only sad thing is that they've been reduced to the equivalent of McDonalds fashion, if that means anything. Fast food fashion, fast food quality.

One more point, most people do not know how to fix their own clothes anymore. Most people don't even know how to MAKE their own clothes anymore.

I live in a relatively small, insignificant town and there's no cool vintage or thrift stores around and I'd prefer to not drive hours to a big city to visit one, so it seems like my best bet is buying new from good, reputable brands.
So is Woolrich still good quality? I have a few of their wool jackets from the 60s that my dad used to wear.

>> No.9878724

>>9878661
Woolrich's USA-made stuff is decent (and to an extent, some of their other stuff) but I don't believe much of their clothing is tailored. Traditional fits. It'd be easy to come off as dadcore (the objectively bad kind) if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Then again you could just have any purchases altered later.

Also, on the topic of where to buy vintage clothing outside of thrift stores - eBay and Etsy are actually really great websites for that sort of thing, I recommend them. Plenty of deadstock.
